Kate Middleton brings back pantyhose. Bare legs are so 2010.

(Photo by Lionel Hahn - WPA Pool/Getty Images) (Photo by Lionel Hahn - WPA Pool/Getty Images)Kate Middleton's latest contribution to fashion: pantyhose. After two straight weeks of pairing knockout designer dresses with '80s-style sheer stockings, the Duchess of Cambridge has proven that everything she touches-really everything-turns to style gold.

The last time Leggs were in fashion, Melanie Griffith was teasing her hair and rambling on about 'Trask'. But after a few months and a North American tour showing off shimmering gams, Kate's bringing back the look for a new generation.

Egg-crate color is out, and clear, almost fairy-dusted iridescence is in. But the song remains the same: she's got Leggs and she knows how to use them.

"Sheer pantyhose look quite elegant," writes the Boston Globe's Beth Teitell, after scanning photos of Prince William's wife in a carousel of dresses over the past two weeks. Teitell welcomes the redux as an antidote to shaving cuts and dry, unevenly fake-tanned knees.

Already, the trend has caught on in the UK, with a significant spike in nude hosiery sales since Kate's made them part of her dressing routine, according to the Daily Mail.

But skeptics say Kate's hosed-up look has less to do with her own invention and more to do with protocol. It's an unwritten rule that royal ambassadors and guests attend events dressed to make the queen proud: closed-toed shoes, mid-length skirts and pantyhose. Lady Di's sheer stockings (DKNY's were her brand of choice) were such a staple of her regal look, they were incorporated into replica Franklin Mint dolls. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, a former cutting-edge catwalker, has been spotted at official events in the less-than-edgy hose. Even Kate's sister Pippa Middleton, a by-proxy royal, has been spotted in the sheer legwear.

On a recent royal visit, Tom Hank's wife, Rita Wilson complained that she was required to wear hosiery for an event at Buckingham Palace, sparking murmurs of a palace dress code. "Women must wear closed-toed shoes - and get this: stockings! Sheer disbelief - I don't even own a pair of sheer hose," she told Harper's Bazaar.

According to the official royal website, the palace no longer has a dress code, but those hoping to gain admittance to royal events in the UK or abroad, even members of media covering an event, are expected to "comply with the dress code on formal occasions out of respect for the guests of The Queen, or any other member of the Royal Family."

For guests of a royal wedding that means evening gowns. For female journalists at any type of palace-sponsored event that means trousers or a skirt suit. And if we're talking skirt suits, a staple of the '80s business woman and the queen, we're also implying sheer tights.

In the office, sheer stockings have become dividing line between two generations. The younger, embracing bare legs and self-tanner, over the old guard's corporate mandate of stockings. But in the business of being a royal, the queen still has an indisputable style influence, even over one of the world's biggest trendsetters. Now it looks like that influence is spreading internationally.

But don't expect it to overtake the White House. First Lady Michelle Obama, though known on occasion to sport the legwear, is not a fan. "I stopped wearing pantyhose a long time ago, because it was painful and they'd always rip," Kate's fellow style icon announced on "The View" in 2008. "Put 'em on, rip 'em..it's inconvenient."

I appreciate Kates gesture and yes, how lovely she looks in nylon stockings, truly a lady that brings out the gentleman in me.

Up in New England, the warm days last week prompted many to let their legs back out, and I was pleasantly pleased to see more sheer hosiery this year. I hope the trend continues.

She should get Mrs. Obama a pair or 20 of pantyhose. Would be better than that crisco she spreads on her legs. EW. Anyways I get a million times more compliments in pantyhose than bare leg. Once I noticed this I started wearing hose more and feel more confident.

Personally, I didn't know panythose wasn't in style. I've always worn it (with the exception of summer time dresses and sandals), even as a teenager. When I was younger, and didn't like the tightness of full pantyhose, I wore thigh-highs.
Pantyhose is a classy accessory- I think a lot of females, regardless of their age, would benefit from using it. It hides flaws, increases circulation (which decreases vericose veins in the future!), flattens tummys, and just smooths out a look....you won't be 18 forever, and real men love a lady with class and style.

And guys wondering if those are thigh highs/stockings makes it even sexier! Miss the days when women always wore hosiery...

I agree, I didn't know that they were "out" either. I am early 20's and have always thought that they were a staple. If i wore dresses/skirts more often I would wear them. I think that people who say that they shouldn't be worn should try them out. They do wonders if you have flaws, bruises, uneven skin tone/texture... And they CAN be sexy! I think that the only pantyhose that should be "out" are the opaque white ones, and some of the new tackier colors that are so "in" right now.

I am very glad to hear people saying this about hosiery. Like Jessica, I'm in my early 20s, and I always wear pantyhose with a dress or skirt, unless it's a sundress or something like that. I just think they make my legs look so much better; the high heels aren't quite enough to do that! Wearing shoes without some sort of stocking can also be very damaging to the shoes, so there's a practical side to it as well. I don't get why so many of these "fashion gurus" are so against pantyhose, but I also don't think any of us need to take what they say as infallible.

With all due respect to Mr. Gunn, I couldn't disagree more. Beautiful legs in beautiful hose are not anachronistic. They are elegant and classic.

I agree with Jacquline. I didn't even know pantyhose were out of style and for the most part, I've always found them comfortable. I personally admired Kate's light "shimmery" leg look; that would be nice for spring and summer type dresses. I can't imagine going bare legged in the winter months; I would literally freeze standing at the bus stop for 45 minutes in artic weather. Plus, my legs are pale, so a hint of color is nice. xo

He didn't say hosiery was out of style- just the sheer kind. I disagree with him. It makes your legs look very nice without having heavy material on your legs. Sometime TG is way off his mark.

This article is specifically referring to pantyhose. I think it shoud be more directed as hoseiry in general. Whether it is garter belt and nylons, stay up stockings or pantyhose is irregardless as they all accomplish the same goal of flattering a woman's legs. Style is merely a personal choice but in my opinion it is a necessary choice when your trying to look good.

I was a debutante in the late 80's, so I'm not ancient! We were taught that a lady always wears hosiery with business or formal wear. Bare legs and opened toed shoes were only for casual events. I was also taught how to be gracious, write a thank you note, carry on civil conversation, eat with the proper fork, and dance a fox trot. It seems that the uneducated Hollywood scene and worse, reality TV, dictate our manners and fashion - what a shame.

I was always under the impression that the more educated a women was, the less likely she is going to want to wear high heals, pantyhose, ... These things constrict a woman's movement.

How do the reporters know she's wearing pantyhose? Maybe they are thigh highs. Many men really like those and find them extremely sexy. I think pantyhose or stockings lend class to a dressy outfit. I live in the deep south, so in the hot months, we just can't wear them, but in cooler weather, they are great!

I didn't know they WEREN'T in style. If it's summer and a very casual look, sure, bare legs are fine. I rarely wear dresses or skirts, but when I do it's because it's a relatively dressy occasion, and then I can't imagine bare legs. They look better than bare uneven legs, and they help prevent blisters from the shoes. And as said below, they are indeed elegant and classic. I LOVE Kate's shimmery look.

I just don't understand who decided that pantyhose is out of style. I mean, I can't go anywhere outside during cold weather without covering up. I think it's ridiculous to go out in near freezing weather bareleg. I saw so many business women on the train with barelegs during snow and was wondering why would they suffer through risks of hypothermia for some fashion statement? It doesn't look great anyway, and whoever said "Pantyhose is so overrated" is a bad fashion adviser. I always look slimmer wearing it! Go Kate! Thank you for making our lives easier!

Tights or pantyhose should be worn during the cool to cold months of year, especially for the formal events. So, Kate is wearing it right. Plus I think it is very sexy. Leave bare legs to the summer.

I wear a long dress with leggings that come somewhere below the knees and above the ankles. I typically wear sandals that allow my toes to breath, but then I live in California. I also have very good looking legs. I started going without pantyhose way before it became fashionable to forgo the hose. People had a hard time telling whether or not I was wearing pantyhose.

most women's legs are not as beautiful as they THINK they are ---pantyhose makes them look much better and sexier
    • Bill  •  5 months ago
Honestly, 99.9% of women have ugly BARE legs. Even the Hollywood A-listers. Hosiery is classy and definitely a PLUS to a woman in a skirt

Tim, we love you,but we're not holding our breath regarding your style dictates. Frankly, we think it's high time for a little modesty, and less bare skin!

Gunn is a fool of the highest order. These fools who think THEY know what's cool and what isn't, just rips me. The Lady, always looks like a lady.........that's what she is.
Not a word, however, about those gunboat feet of Michelle Obama. She could water ski barefooted with the best of them. Built in snowshoes. Oh well, even the critics are afraid of her. She does bite, you know.
