Kate Middleton, reluctant style icon, will not appear in Vogue

Kate Middleton doesn't want to be a style icon. Photo by Getty ImagesKate Middleton doesn't want to be a style icon. Photo by Getty ImagesThe world is still obsessed with Kate Middleton's wardrobe, but the new Duchess of Cambridge may not want to be known as a style icon. Recently the fashion industry is buzzing about Middleton possibly appearing in Vogue magazine-supposedly Editor in Chief Anna Wintour had roped in Kate's engagement portrait photographer, Mario Testino, to make a potential photo shoot more comfortable for the future princess. "I haven't seen a bad picture of her," Testino told Sky News. "I think he's chosen well. Stylish, beautiful, charming, she fits the part perfectly. She is a very nice person as well."

But now reporters at E! News say Middleton has no intentions of posing for Vogue. "Both William and Kate feel it would be wrong for Kate to promote herself as a fashion or style icon," a palace aide told E! News. "That's not what they are about and they take their royal duties far too seriously to, in one sense, trivialize them."

We respect that point of view, but the fact is Middleton is a style icon! She may not have attended London Fashion Week like her sister Pippa, but she clearly is interested in fashion and has a good sense of style. Princess Diana did a few photo shoots in her day, but perhaps the Duchess wants to prove herself first. "To be brutally honest, a request to sit down with The Times, the BBC or one of the major American networks to discuss the monarchy in general is one thing," the palace insider said. "For Kate to be photographed draped in the latest creation of a couture house to, knowingly or otherwise, self-promote her status as some sort of fashion horse is something quite different."

Apparently Queen Elizabeth is against the idea of a Vogue photo shoot as well. "Kate is keenly conscious that while her new grandmother-in-law may not chide her for appearing on a Vogue cover," the source said. "She would definitely not be amused, and Her Majesty is a real genius at making people squirm with simply a look or a 'tut, tut.'"

Do you think Kate Middleton should pose for Vogue or other fashion spreads? Or do you think she's doing the right thing by staying out of the fashion world?

Kate does beautifullly well with just the way she presents herself and her way of representing the Royal Family is way over the top!! She doesn't need to prove herself by being on a fashion top list for anybody. That isn't what she is about and she knows her role very well, by being a Gorgeous Wife to Prince William and to the people of England. She needs no extra help in that department, she has got it all handled on her own in her own stylel and her own skin!!! Congratulations to Kate and her sense of natural beauty and style which has captivated the entire world!!!

I think she is quite on point about this, she is a beautiful woman but doesn't want that to be all that she is known for especially this early on.

She is the highest level of style icon with class and grace only because she is not striving to be so or pandering to the idustry. Let them pander to her as it should be in proper order. Doing a Vogue shoot would be a crass move that would knock her down a few pegs, giving the fashion industry the higher status and validity at the expense of her own. Good move to stay above it all and glad she is smart enough and dignified enough to say no to their seductive illusion that they are the most important thing in the world. She will remain the highest style icon without any fashion photo shoot - she doesn't have to earn it by working for them! True fashion at its most dignified and least campy is this way: a complement to enhance the situation, not the focus or point of the situation. Kate seems to get this. Her wedding dress wasn't the point of their wedding - it only enhanced it. Almost any other tasteful gown would have had just as much praise and examination and influence. She exercises a refined good taste and chooses things that complement her. It is that simple - hopefully more will follow this lead, but it won't come from a spread in Vogue. Still, it is nice to be asked, and right she declined.

She does not need to pose in any magazine to show that's she's fashionable, she already is in a class all by herself. She's self confident, secure in her skin, poised and normal, just what it takes to be Prince William's wife. She'll stand out on her own without the help from anybody. William loves her truly and she does not have anything to prove.

Thank you, Fairy Tale Couple for putting it all into the proper perspective. The media will eventually bring a sour note to your healthy admirers. Stay solid.

She does not need to pose for anything to gain confidence. She already has it in herself and with a husband who loves her as much, that is more than enough!

Yes she should be in a hype style mag, owned by the US, sell more copies, boost economy. She is not going to be in Maxim, what about Cosmo? She is in a class of her own because she is the Duchess. A good looking Woman.

i think she made a good decision. she should be thought of by the things she does and not the things she wears.

I applaude it - and she and her handsome prince are in agreeance on this - shows class

She is a class act all the way.

She's definitely doing the right thing. It would be one thing if posing on the cover put her in the company of women like Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy......but now it draws comparisions to Kardashians or Lady Gaga. Not quite the vibe a duchess is going for. :)

The Duchess appears to be a beautiful person inside and out. I respect her choices.

The Duchess is stunning, why not do a Vogue article and donate money to a favorite charity..or several charitys!! Nothing wrong in that...

She already is a style icon. More importantly she is an example of grace under pressure and a great role model for young women.

She has no particular reason to pose for Vogue, and legitimate reasons not to. I think everyone should respect that!

Let the woman make her own decisions!
She does not owe us anything, especially the press.

There are several things about this article that I find offensive. First, her name is NO LONGER Kate Middleton. Secondly, she IS a princess NOW, NOT a FUTURE princess. And as for her being on a Vogue cover .....we all witnessed what happened to Diana. Should Kate be photographed for Vogue she would only be following in Diana's footsteps. There are way too many comparisons of the two as it is. Let's allow Kate to be her own person, with her own strengths and weaknesses.

You are correct that she is no longer Kate Middleton, but she is NOT a princess. Even Diana was technically not a princess. She was Diana, Princess of Wales, not Princess Diana. You are BORN a princess, so even should William at some point be given the title Prince of Wales like his father, she will not be Princess Katherine.

George, you are right except Diana was a princess because she was a lady (as opposed to a commoner).
