Kate Moss is now "fat" and that is now in style (grrrrrrr.)

Photo: New York MagazinePhoto: New York MagazineA few months ago, famously tiny model Kate Moss claimed that, for the first time in her life, she now had to wear a bra and that this was due to her recent, substantial weight gain. Those in fashion circles started calling Moss "curvy" and stylish folks all over the world ushered in a new era of shapeliness, ignited by one of this generation's finest trend setters.

This all seemed well and good. Moss did look a smidge fuller and that fullness appeared healthy and pretty and soft and natural and sexy and everything that's, frankly, nice about a woman's body. But that was until yesterday, when a British paper changed the term "curvy" to "fat" and claimed that fat is now trendy. That's when things got ridiculous.

In Sunday's Times of London, style commentator Giles Hattersley stated that seven different people (ohmyGA!) have recently told him that Kate Moss is fat and, therefore, "'fat' is no longer the ultimate fashion insult." He goes on to cite recent research that suggests that in times of financial crisis, men prefer fat women: "The study revealed that men who are financially insecure are more drawn to heavier women than men who are confident about their bank balances....The biology isn't hard to decode: they don't want to be lumbered with some waify dependent when they are struggling for their own survival: they want to be well covered."

Which isn't new news, exactly, and also isn't all that offensive, until you get to the visual of a gangly, fearful man hiding underneath or "covered" by his big woman's girth. Am I the only person who finds this language kind of wrong?

Hattersley concludes his story by saying that extreme dieting is now uninteresting and exercise goals imply a high level of self-involvement, but: "Fat people, meanwhile, look better every day. Why? Because they look carefree. So heave a sigh of relief and let your gut out. Kate Moss might be fat, but it turns out she's bang on trend, as ever."

Kate Moss is fat? Fat people are carefree? Are you kidding? I understand that trends have skewed far too skinny in the past couple of years, but to suggest that Moss (at perhaps a size 6? Not even, maybe a 4?) is in any way overweight is, quite honestly, insulting to the rest of us. I would kill for Kate Moss's "fat" body, as would almost every woman I know. Hattersley also completely patronizes the actually overweight by intimating that they haven't a care in the world. Anyone who has ever experienced significant weight gain knows it's weird and an adjustment and can be a serious source of anxiety.

So, sure, I'd love to see the fashion world embrace curvy women in a real way, but this, my friends, is not that way. Giles Hattersley's "Oh yeah, fat is now fabulous! Gain 3 pounds! You'll be fat! Yeah, yeah!" theory is flippant and pretentious and I'm afraid it's not serving anyone.
Why Kate Moss's new figure is bang on trend

Marilyn Monroe was not a modern size 10 or 12. She was a vintage size 10 or 12. Sizes where completely different 50 years ago. And I remember not long ago when size 18 was the start of plus sizes. Since when did 12 or 14 become plus size???

Size 18 a few year ago is the same as size 12 now. Its called vanity sizing. A lot of clothing store made there sizes larger. Today Marilyn Monroe would be a size 4. Our society is fat, and too thin at the same time. We should be looking at BMI or Body fat %.

oh- and if you want someone thinner than Kate Moss- then date a F N- 13 year old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Size are bigger then they use to be, it is a marketing thing. Women do not want to buy clothes when they think it is a bigger size so a couple of years ago the clothing manufacturers started vanity sizing in the US because we were getting bigger. If you go to a vintage clothing shop you can see that Size 8 50 years ago vs Size 8 now.

Kate has gained weight because she probably is not doing Coke anymore.

Models are supposed to be thin, because the clothing they are HIRED TO SHOW is supposed to look like it is sitting on the hanger.

They aren't thin to be sexy.

And womens sizes are dramatically different from the ones Marilyn Monroe were fitted for.

Maybe she decided to stop putting stuff up her nose and live a cleaner life. Thus eating a meal or two. Why someone would have her indorse their product is beyond me.

*goldengirl* You are right: Miss Moss isn't "attractive" in the classic sense of that word. But if you've seen "America's Top Model" most of those girls aren't attractive either. I've come to believe that model agencies have a very specific set of standards having to do with limb length, the set & size of the head and the looks of a face as it's photographed, whether a girl can get into an outfit & "play pretend" and sell a personality to the viewer. Many models don't think of themselves as particularly pretty, even though they photograph well...as teens they feel gawky, overly tall & odd.

she looks hot, even though she's always been too skinny for my taste she's a beautiful girl and now she looks even more beautiful. If that's what "fat" looks like, SIGN ME UP! ha ha

      oh shut UP!

She's gained some weight and you know what, it looks good on her. SHE didn't call herself 'fat' other people did.

It's frustrating to watch people bitch about women who are too small, and then when those women fill larger pants its not 'big enough' to be legitimate. Enough! If what it takes is an icon to clue the world into the fact that girls with fat on their tums and bums can be beautiful, then so be it. Enough with the judging! It's ridiculous.

If you want the world to stop judging your size then YOU have to stop judging too, do like Moss and decide that what you weigh is what you weigh and that doesn't make you any more or less bankable, or beautiful. Jesus.

Talk about missing the forest for the trees.

She looks normal. Curvy might just be wrong word choice on his part.

Pearl... (Not that I think you will see this but it's going to make me feel better)... a size 8 is NO WHERE near fat... When I was a size 8 I was WELL within my healthy weight range as determined BY MY DOCTOR..... I was toned and had only a little bit of stomach pooch and I am only 5'1"... You have a distorted view of what is fat/unhealthy and thin/healthy...

Lilly (again I don't think you will see this either)... a size 12 is not technically a plus sized... it's not even in the women's section.. a true plus size isn't until a size 16 or higher...

First off, I'd like to say, Fudge you Britain.
It's you that introduced that waif crap to America
      It started in the 60's.
It's Britain's underlying sexism. It's an attempt to keep women weak.

Thanks for posting the link to the Hattersley article because I don't think what's in this blog reflects what he said at all. First of all the term "fat" appears in quotes throughout; it's repeatedly noted that it's all relative, and that the 7 people commenting were admittedly all people from the fashion industry with a biased view. Agree that his article is completely futile, as it provides zero insight on the economy and is just another drop in the ocean of debate on size 2 vs. size 0 models. but it doesn't say what you say it says.
