Kids Fashion Inspired by Movies: The Breakfast Club!

One of the beautiful things about being a parent is holding the credit cards. Even if your kid is nowhere near ready to watch the 1985 Brat Pack classic The Breakfast Club, that doesn't mean you're not allowed to make your child dress like Claire, or Andrew, or Bender, or Brian … hey, even Principal Vernon is fair game.

Sneak these items on your kids' wishlists and its a win-win: a gift for them, and a gift for you. And if they ask why you make them repeat "If he gets up, we'll all get up! It'll be anarchy!" or listen to Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me" over and over again, just say, "Honey, you'll understand when you're older." - Jillian Capewell

1. The Princess
If Claire Standish, played by Molly Ringwald, were heading into elementary school today, we'd like to think that she'd rock this mix of girly and tough: after all, as she says, "I'm not that pristine."

Target Jacket, $40; Gap Cardigan, Gap, $40; Crewcuts Skirt, $45; Target Boots, $50

2. The Brain
Without Anthony Michael Hall's Brian Johnson, there wouldn't be that epic manifesto that so many Breakfast Club devotees can still recite today: "Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong ..." We'd like to think that the Brian of 2011 would keep it understand and serious - with cozy socks that his mom totally made him wear to detention.

American Apparel Kids Sweatshirt, $24; Gap Socks, $4.95; Fjällräven - Kånken Backpack, $65; Volcom Boys Chino Pant, $29

3. The Athlete

We'd like to hope that the new-millenium version of Emilio Estevez's Andrew Clark wouldn't succumb to peer pressure to impress his father like his 1985 counterpart did. Maybe his new duds will give him the confidence to take on middle school - and junior football season.

77kids Puffer Hoodie, $50; Crewcuts Tee, $15; Crewcuts Jeans, $40; Adidas Sneakers, $61

4. The Basketcase

The brooding Allison Reynolds, played by Ally Sheedy, would likely keep her gothy image even after all these years. Maybe her mini-me would cheer it up with this cute horse sweater and hairband.

Target Sweater, $18; Old Navy Skirt, $20; Capelli Headband, $10; Old Navy Tights, $7.94; Converse Sneakers; $25

5. The Criminal
Listen - maybe John Bender, played by Judd Nelson, was the rough-and-tough rebel of the film, but that doesn't mean he didn't have a soft side. We like how the rain boots fit this perfectly: kid-friendly playfulness with a tough-guy exterior.

Gap Shirt, $30, Crewcuts Striped Shirt, $28; Old Navy Scarf, $6; Target Boots, $28

6. Principal Richard Vernon
For your little stickler for the rules. While we can't imagine any kid looking up to grumpy, controlling principal Richard Vernon ("Excuse me sir, does Barry Manilow know that you raided his wardrobe?"), we think some little dudes would look just awesome dressing like him. Add in a mini filing cabinet for the rifling through of permanent records - er, we mean baseball cards.

Crewcuts Jacket and Suit Pants, $128 and $68; Izod Shirt and Tie, $20; ThinkGeek Filing Cabinet, $13; Cafepress Mug, $15

7. ... and the icing on the cake

What do you you when your breakfast club of tomorrow is all assembled? Pop some popcorn and pop in the DVD ... although we would recommend waiting until they're at least in junior high.
