Kim Kardashian is Photoshop's latest victim

I won't lie to you, readers. I have been staring at the images at left, on and off, for at least two hours. They depict celebreality star Kim Kardashian, pre- and post-airbrushing, for a feature in Complex magazine, and they are, to me anyway, beyond fascinating.

The release of the original pic (far left) was apparently a mistake. Some bloggers found it on Complex's site as part of an "exclusive photo gallery" and it was quickly taken down. The second, thinner, smoother image of KK is the one that ran in the magazine.

What's striking about these photographs is what the retouchers decided to change. For starters, they lightened Kardashian's skin all over, and they took out any texture that made it appear in any way like real skin. (Can you see how her thighs look human in the first pic and like a Barbie in the second?) Next, they shaved a few inches off her thighs, waist, and maybe her arm; added a bit to left breast; and cleaned up the weird bodysuit thing she's wearing so it's less fringey. It's not dramatic, in fact, we've all seen much worse, but the question is: Why is this necessary at all? She's on the cover (and is no doubt famous) because she has a gorgeous, curvy, irresistibly sexy body. It's a body, from everything I've read-yes, I've read Kim Kardashian stories-this woman works hard to maintain. Why is it unthinkable to leave the damn picture alone? To show the model as she really is, flesh texture and all? The original image is not offensive, it's not ugly, and it's not sloppy. Wouldn't a men's magazine want to embrace and highlight a woman's natural curves and not Photoshop her into a glossy fembot?
    I just do not understand.

It's interesting how they've lightened her skin.

While most people are strutting around in their imperfect forms and idealising the models who look smooth and perfect, no one stops to think that many of our young girls are taking note. They believe that to be sexy they have to starve themselves thin. They see some cellulite and they are ready to commit suicide. Ok maybe I'm being dramatic. But the truth is while the ladies on magazine covers are aesthetically pleasing, we in the real world should accept that at some point in time we will begin to age...all of us. I would pose for a photo shoot, cellulite, wrinkles and all.

Beauty queen POST photoshop, you mean. You can't compare other people to her because not everyone comes with a photoshop airbrushing team.

        You also spelt compete wrong.

every single printed image has been through photoshop. You cannot print camera RAW rgb 48 bit images. they need converting. They need the levels adjusted. And of course if there are tools that can enhance the image, like skin smoothing they will be used too. Why? why not? if your images look that tiny bit slicker than someone elses you get more work.

My question would be similar to the authors - IF Kim Kardashian is just gorgeous as she is, why wear makeup? Why does anyone wear makeup?
      • Gean 15 days ago
A lot of people wear makeup to express themselves in different ways. Makeup lets you change how you look to suit your own personality, or how you think you'd like to look.
I find most people wear makeup for themselves, not for others.

I agree with gean and would like to add that makeup can often enhance your beauty. I'm going to use myself as an example for this: when I get even a little less than 10 hours of sleep I get horrible dark circles, to the point that it looks like I have a black eye (on both eyes) and I use makeup to cover this. The dark circles are not a part of my natural look, they are the unfortunate side effect of a bad sleep and can be quite distracting form my other features. The makeup simply helps show my natural beauty. It's similar to wearing certain colours that simply enhance the beauty of someones skin.

Also, the issue here is that they are not just highlighting her beautiful features they are changing them.

I get the whole airbrushing so the skin tone is even or making the lighting even or whatever, But changing the shape of someone's body is going too far. That's not a "tiny bit slicker".

I have to admit, tho, playing around with Photoshop and the like is just FUN. And, furthermore, I accept the reality that magazine covers are ART, not actual "real-life" photographic images. Costumes, wigs, make-up, even plastic surgery have been used by artists of the staging arena, both live and on still media, for the purpose of entertaining audiences for CENTURIES. Magazine covers are for our entertainment, not our education. We need to keep that straight! When we as women get up in the morning and get ready for the day, or talk to our daughters about body-image, let us remember that God gave us our bodies for a much higher purpose than entertainment. Stay healthy, take care of your body, your mind and your soul, and do not ever think that striving to look like a magazine cover is on your to-do list!

Blah blah blah. It's the same rhetoric that comes around every time a famous fat girl is photoshopped. Don't get me wrong, I like thicker women, I would take kim kardashian over kate moss all day long. But the simple fact of the matter is, I am a photo-retoucher, I make a living doing what the retoucher did above. Although, I do it better, imho. That being said, 9 times out of 10, a model (especially someone like KK) won't even allow the images to be published unless she's been photoshopped. So don't blame the magazine or the retoucher, blame the model.

I think- the Artist did a great Job - and did anyone bother to ask the lady her self what she desired to look like on the cover of the magazine ORIGINAL OR PHOTOSHOP.

Oh whatever. You all say yey lets leave her natural.
Pretty sure the first thing you'd say was OMG she's let herself go, gosh look at the size of her thighs if the original was put on a magazine cover. It's because its not what you're used to seeing and most people love to gossip, so when a celebrity isn't airbrushed your first thoughts are not about natural beauty. Face it. There's a reason you clicked this link in the first place, you wanted to see what she looked like without airbrushing, ohh she's normal ooh look at how she's not perfect.
Its not going to be until afterwards when you read somewhere that the magazine cover you were gossiping about wasn't photoshopped that you'll get back on the bandwagon of natural beauty and oh its amazing they put it as the front cover, finally a change blah blah.

I find your question to be a stupid question. There is no argument that Kim Kardashian looks better in the photoshopped picture. And your statement of "she has a gorgeous, curvy, irresistibly sexy body" is based on her photoshopped pictures. I have seen a lot of pictures of Kim Kardashian, and most of them look unnatural and distorted. Her whole image and sexual appeal is 90% fabricated and 10% real, just like most female celebrities you see on magazines/TV/etc. It's impossible to find a celebrity who's not a victim of photoshop, let alone someone like Kim Kardashian. So I find this story to be redundant and a waste of time.

The sad thing is, we all know why they do it we just don't like it so we complain about it. I agree that American media outlets project unrealistic body images about both men and women and I don't like it either but because we all want to be entertained we still buy the magazines and go see the movies. The bigger question is this, why does this woman get paid so much to have people take pictures of her? Is she teaching children or keeping our streets safe? No, she doesn't do anything of the sort and yet she gets paid millions to be in magazines and even that isn't real, they fix her up. We need to start paying attention to what we place value on in this country and put it where it is deserved.

Like the natural look. Whoever photochopped this pic even lighten up her skin. I wonder, isn't KK proud of her ethnic background, because, you know she had to approve of this photo, especially mama.

....Why is she famous? Even the Photoshoped version isn't super great. I remain confused about the talent she has that keeps drawing people in.
