'Mad Men' is Back, and so Are the Clothes!

Mad MenMad MenBolstered by the success of its first Mad Men capsule collection, which debuted in August, Banana Republic will launch a second round of the collection next month.

The clothing and accessories were designed by Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant.

Bryant manages to keep the clothing suitably sixties, while still staying true to the subdued Banana Republic style.

For example, this particular dress gives a nod to the era without screaming "Look at me! I'm RETRO!" I can see it having mass appeal.

But if you want your Mad Men inspiration to be a little more bold, not to worry!

There are other affordable designers out there taking a big cue from Mad Men style.

ModClothModClothOnline favorite ModCloth has oodles of affordable 50s and 60s-inspired dresses, including this Hepcat in Cherry dress (Modcloth, $49.99). You have to be quick if you like a style, though- The most popular dresses sell out FAST.

Dolly CoutureDolly CoutureIf Dolly Couture had been around when I got married in Scotland ten years ago, I totally would have bought one of these retro-style wedding gowns instead of traveling overseas with a full-lengh dress. Many of them are affordable, like this Newport Beach gown (Dolly Couture, $595), and the designer will custom-design a dress to your specification if you like one of the styles, but want to make it all your own. FAB.

Lesley EversLesley EversLesley Evers is one of my favorite Mad Men-inspired designers. Her dresses are expensive, but they have the heavy look and feel of a 60s-era dress that you can pass down to your daughter some day. And while her prices are high, she always has cute things on sale, which make them more affordable as a special occasion dress. This Grace dress, for example, originally $265, is now on sale for $159.

Pinup Girl ClothingPinup Girl ClothingI'm dying to place a large order with Pinup Girl Clothing, which specializes in all things Mad Men related, from dresses to swimwear to lingerie. The prices are reasonable (this Dee Dee dress is $118), and the dresses appear to be boob-friendly as well! WIN.

Kate SpadeKate SpadeMy favorite retro-inspired designer has got to be Kate Spade. Forget the fact that I have yet to own a single Kate Spade piece of clothing. A girl can dream about this $398-dollar Japanese Floral Austin Dress, right? *sigh*

Lilly PulitzerLilly PulitzerA close second is Lilly Pulitzer. I'm crazy about this Bellanna Dress, but at $265, I'm afraid it's just not meant to be ... The good news about Lilly Pulitzer, though, is that you can occasionally find the brand at discount stores like T.J. Maxx.

So ... what do you think of these Mad Men-inspired designers? Do you have a favorite of your own? And are you looking forward to the return of the series next month?

From what I've seen of clips of this show, there is some candy. For a few years, I've been obsessed with clothing from the 50s, early 60s. Please, please bring back petticoats and gloves! I'm trying to do this gently, but any bit of elegance in my college tee, flip flops and dreaded hair town makes people think I'm going to a ball. I want to see modesty and elegance even if we're not doing a costume party. It's so sexy while being polite and subtle. Dare to dress well, even if you shop at Goodwill!

It's great to see women dressing like Ladies again. And no. it doesn't make you the "weaker" gender. If anything, it shows off the strength of women that much more. Womens' fashion has suffered too long at the hands of designers with gender identity issues and the trash in the film and music industries. We have finally come full circle. Goddam it looks great!!!

Mad Men Era. For you younger people, clothes were fun and sexy and did not have to show all that skin!!!

Why do they call it mad men clothing, if all the clothes are being worn by women?

It's been proven that people tend to act according to how they're dressed. When people dress up, the manners you were taught as a child suddenly re-appear. Also, other people will treat you differently if you are clean & neatly dressed vs. unkempt and slovenly.

So true!! Children in uniforms (and they don't have to be constricting, military style, either--khakis, golf shirts, skorts, etc. look great, too!!) act much more polite, refined and are much easier to be around :-)

Great style. Women don't need to dress like porn stars to be sexy. Women are plenty sexy on their own. These dresses make them sexy with STYLE.

Before anyone rushes out to buy "actual" Vintage Clothing....You need to know that the sizes run smaller.
Women's Vintage sizes are NOT comparable to the sizing of "Vintage Inspired" clothing.
A Vintage Men's Large is more like a Men's Medium of Today.

You should also note that sometimes, Vintage just means Ugly. Remember that when you think you have to have tham gold lame' housecoat...

      So pretty!

Ok, so the dresses are cute and colorful but......I'm a GUY! I watch the show for the sophisticated satire, ideas on party themes, statement making men's attire and that redheaded siren, Christina Hendricks!

So glad I kept my original clothes from that era. Now if I could only lose weight so I can get back into them!

The last time people bothered to get dressed was in the '80s....people dress like slobs now! Late 50s and early 60s .....very cool!

Pretty dresses, especially the Dolly Couture! I wants! Admittedly I like the red dress but I dunno if I could pull it off. Maybe yellow?

Learn how to sew! My sister sewed all our clothing when I was a kid. She was great! I have a machine, but I don't have the patience for it.

I wish I had mom's clothes from back then! She had some of the exact same dresses I see on the show.
