Charla Krupp gives 10 tips for finding the best, most flattering bras for you.

    By Lois Joy Johnson, BettyConfidential.com

One of my best friends is a petite peppy blonde you've seen lots of times on the Today show. She's Charla Krupp, author of the bestseller How Not To Look Old ($15.99 reduced to $10.87, amazon.com) a.k.a. the bra-queen. Charla has been known to eyeball a friend or colleague's chest (over lunch no less) and pull out of her large Gucci bag a bra that "you must try right this minute because it will change your life." She's always right and saved a large group of her N.Y.C. and Hamptons chums from looking saggy or like deflated party balloons in our DVF and Milly sheaths this summer. Buy her paperback to get all the info but I asked Charla to give the Bettys her top ten bra tips:

    1. If you haven't gotten a professional bra fitting in the last year go now! If you gained or lost weight, had a baby, are menopausal, went on or off the pill … you need an update. Bra manufacturer Wacoal says in the last ten years average size went from a 34B to a 36D. Wow! Major department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Bloomingdales all have specially trained fitters in their bra departments.

    2. The right bra will lift your breasts up and off your ribcage and give you a couple of more inches of torso right under the bra band so your body looks longer and leaner. This is the skinniest part of your torso so don't hide it under saggy breasts! I once did a bra segment on Oprah and this tip really got amazing viewers raves.

    3. Get a molded underwire bra especially if you're a D or larger. For years I wore minimizers thinking the compression made me look smaller. I ended up looking like I had a uniboob … or like I had four boobs, depending on the bra. They either squashed me together or emphasized excess spillage at the top and sides.

    4. You need a wardrobe of bras to avoid a panic situation when you're getting dressed. How many times have you put something on and realized the bra didn't work? At the minimum, you need a T-shirt bra, a strapless bra, a cleavage bra, a sports bra and a casual weekend bra.

    5. Forget white bras forever - no more! Buy nude and black. Nude disappears under white clothes and sheers and black works under everything else. If you have to start out with just one, get nude.

    6. Get a casual weekend bra. So many women just skip a bra altogether when they're at home hanging out but you still need support. The Spanx Bra-llelujah! bra comes in underwire and soft cup, or try the new racerback underwire: perfect for cutaway sleeveless tops (32A to 38D, $62 nordstrom.com). It won't give you back fat even in skinny fitted tees and there's absolutely no metal or stitching to irritate. You feel like you have nothing on.

    7. I keep saying that the Le Mystere Dream Tisha bra (underwire, 32C to 44G, $68, nordstrom.com) is the ultimate T-shirt bra and it is. I know it's pricey, but it's better to splurge on a good bra when you're busty and scrimp on clothes, because a quality bra like this one makes anything you wear look expensive and this will get your boobs up and off your chest.

    8. Bras should lay flat one on top of the other in your drawer, cup to cup. Never roll or fold them up! And if you do wear molded bras, invest in a firm contour travel container like the Bra-g bra case ($49.95 the bragcompany.com) so they don't get squashed in your luggage.

    9. Wash your bras by hand, and never put them in the dryer or sun-dry them. I know you're tempted to throw them in the machine but it wrecks the elasticity. I soak my bras in the sink in a gentle liquid designed for hand washing or Ivory Snow. Right now I'm using Forever New Delicate Fabric Wash ($17, amazon.com). FYI, a single bra lasts about 100 washings from brand new to worn out so you need two of your everyday basic: one to wear while the other one is being washed/dried. Please don't wear the same bra everyday! Believe it or not your bra needs time to "bounce back" so it doesn't lose its holding power.

    10. Let the band, not the cups, do the heavy lifting. The band should sit low on your back below your shoulder blades and feel snug. The bra should stay up even without the straps in place. Some women hike up the straps and raise the band but that actually creates back fat. When trying a new bra, always fasten the middle or loosest hook. With wear, the band stretches and then you'll want to shift to the tightest closure.

One more comment - I followed the instructions on the Playtex site (using a tape measure) and it told me I was a "40 nearly B". Um, yeah - I didn't think so. So I had a much smaller framed friend do the same thing and it told her she was a "40 nearly A". I didn't believe The Girls were a DDD, but I certainly KNEW they were not "nearly B" - they're MUCH too large for that. And a 40? For someone my size that was far too big - I knew that without even trying on the bras (which I did because I was lucky enough to find a Playtex bra in that size in Penneys).

So doing it yourself is also a technique that needs to be perfected. Good luck everyone - we're all on the quest to find the perfect $20 bra and if anyone finds it please share!!! :)

Ug...my bras are all so old. I tried to go bra shopping recently, and tried on like 5 different sizes in 5 or 6 brands and they all fit the same! Couldn't tell a difference between the 34C and the 34D--band too big, cup too small. And neither size is even that out there! I ended up buying something that seemed to fit at the store, but after the first wash, it fit just like the others. So I guess I'm sticking with my old bras (even though they don't fit that well anymore) until I lose enough weight to move down a cup size--maybe then I'll be able to find something. So freaking aggravating...

For you bigger busted gals, Lane Bryant is the way to go. They have professional bra fitters in store or if you're too embarrased to try that then check out lanebryant.com. Also roamans.com, kind of a sister store. Plus, with their cupons, you can get two bras for around $65. If you're not satisfied, you can return your online purchases at the store. And no, I don't work at Lane Bryant. I am just a very satisfied and faithful customer (for 10 years).

Larger chested but petite women should try Bravissimo. They are based out of the UK, and don't have stores here in the US, but you can order all of their merchandise over the internet. They carry from a band size 28 I think, and up to a cup size KK. They also carry swimwear and clothing for larger breasted women. I bought my swimsuit from them this summer, and it's the best one I've ever had! And they have adorable bras.

I have the same problem as Nae Far, I'm 34F....I'm 5'3", 127lbs, but my boobs are HUGE. It is so uncomfortable, I have back aches, and I can never find a bra that fits me, and the ones that do fit are ugly!!! Before I had kids my boobs where 34D and it was already hard to find comfortable cute bras on a budget, now it is impossible

I totally agree with 'the queen' - I live in a small town too - and saks? Bloomingdales? Professional bra fittings? Excuse me but all this article did was serve for some very entertaining reading. Still - the tip on washing bras by hand could come 'handy'!

Calvin Klein makes tons of bras for smaller women who have larger cup sizes (for example, I'm a 30D).

Some of theses tips are good, I guess, but some aren't good. I'm pretty young and i recently went from 34D to 34DD. It's a tough world out there, trying to find sizes like that for a reasonable price. I spent like two hours in the dressing room at kohls trying to find some that work. My particular annoyance is that they don't make fun cute bras in my size (besidet the point of the article, I know).

It's impossible to find 34/36 DD at anything but high end specialty shops or at Victoria's secret. Even during their semi-annual sale two bras was $60 and you can forget about finding a black bra on sale. Why are bras soooooo expensive??

And can I throw out there that the reason women wear 34/36/38 - A/B/C/D is because that's all that you can pretty much find!! Anthing out of that range and you end up spending big bucks $$$ or scouring endlessly. How can anyone buy a bra online without trying it on? That would never work for me.

I'm a 32DD and nursing, I can never find a good nursing bra that give propper support. If i'm wearing a long sleeve shirt it is difficult to get the strap over my arm and if I pull it up it is to tight over my breast and may cause a clog duct. Not to mention it losens the elastic. Where can I find the solution to my problem?

This posting is mostly geared toward women with a decent size chest. I am a 34 A and ALWAYS have a hard time finding a bra. They are either way too small or just a little too big. Does anyone have any store suggestions?? I live in Chicago - so i am surrounded with a multitude of stores. HELP!!

I wouldn't spend more than $10-$15 on a bra...especially one that's supposed to be replaced in 6months! Anything more than that is just insane!

I too am a larger non-universal size. I used to put down professional bra fittings - but most of them are free and in many cases you are really NOT the size you think you are! I have fluctuated from 34B to my current size... I was wasting money buying bras that were either 36C to 38D, or reversing them: 36D or 38C. I ended up having a fitting at Intimacy and found out I am truly a 34F!!!! (European - however that converts to a DDD in American sizing). I thought there is NO WAY these girls are a DDD but when I tried on the bras (yes, very pricey) I realized it was completely true, and for the first time in my adult life I didn't have "third boob" syndrome when I bent over or simply walked across the room, and they were firmly yet comfortably held in place - not squashed but lifted and separated. AND minimal back fat and strap slippage. HOORAY!!

I cannot stress how important a fitting is - even if you can't afford the $90 bra that Intimacy sells you after the fitting. I've spent more on that in 3 months buying the wrong sizes and being frustrated because I look horrible in the wrong size. I had found myself adjusting The Girls without even realizing it when no one is looking.

If you ask me, one $90 bra that fits perfectly (if you can afford it) is far more worth spending $120 on 4 bras that DON'T fit correctly. I recommend, again if you can splurge a little, buying the one bra that fits AMAZINGLY and then really taking the time to search for a less expensive alternative. It just takes time - don't go bra shopping on your lunch hour. :)

SPANX bras are the absolute best! For the weekend, just get the basic bra-leluiah. It costs about $32. You can find genuine ones on ebay for half that. For daily wear, I swear by both the SPANX underwire with the soft cup and the SPANX non-underwire. All of these bras feel like you are not wearing a bra at all, but the two with soft cups give great support, even with a C/D cup. I am a 36C/D. In SPANX, I wear a 36C and they fit perfectly. I am done with VS, Jockey, GAP, Fredrick's, etc.

OMG! Yes, I'm big busted and tired of the mall stores although I do go to have a fitting at VC every year. But, I found new bra's that are awesome Breezies and extremely affordable.

Wait, how do you even do number 10? I may start with the bra in that position, but it doesn't take "the girls" any time to pull it down.

Bras... the most tormenting thing for women. Esp when you are like me and have an awkward size; 34 F.... I'm thin around, but those guys are no where near small. I started out as a 36c, but upon having a kid, my chest grew to an F and never went back down. For someone with such a small frame, it really is a back killer! And on top of that, you can hardly find that size. Victoria Secret only goes to DD, and you're lucky as heck if you can find anything at Walmart or Target. Its rather disappointing.
