Make-up women love but men hate

Neon lips, blue eyeshadow, shimmering glitter, and golden bronzers: This spring, some of the most dramatic looks we saw on the runways are making their way onto our faces. But not everything we dabble on pleases everyone. We had a hunch that some of our biggest beauty obsessions might be turn-offs for guys...so we went ahead asked. Prepare yourself: brutal honesty ensues.

    1. Heavy foundation and powders: "The inch-thick powder is a huge turn-off," says Maxim senior editor Nick Leftley. "No guy wants to kiss a girl on the cheek and then find he¹s wearing foundation himself." A flaking face is one thing, but when your cheek becomes a palette of skin-tone colors, men pay attention...and not the good attention. "I'm always amazed to see women with two-tone faces, two apparently different shades of skin on the face, as if they apply makeup in the dark," says James Oliver Cury, the online editorial director at Maxim. "I'd rather see one greasy face than some sort of melanin imbalance. The nose should match the cheeks."

Getty ImagesGetty Images2. "Bumps": "I never liked, or knew of any other guy who liked, the Gwen Stefani "bumpit" look," says Henry Belanger, an editor at The Good Men Project. "Be wary of anything that makes your head look unnaturally large."

    3. Neon lipstick: Most of the fashion world agreed that electric pouts were a beauty "do" this season. Some men, however, beg to differ. "Orange lips are definitely a departure from what we're used to and not necessarily something a lot of guys I know really respond to just quite yet," say fashion blogger John Januzzi of Lucky and the fashion website, Textbook.

    4. Too-thin brows:"My pet peeve is overly plucked eyebrows," says David Swanson, Maxim's Features Editor."I mean, really? It's basically an advertisement that naturally you're hairier than Robin Williams. If it looks natural, we'd never have to wonder."

    5. Bold eye-shadow: "I don't understand the revival of bright blue eyeshadow," proposes Maxim's Cury. "Is it retro? Is it purposefully over-the-top? To my eyes, it just looks tacky no matter how you wear it." Lucky's Januzzi isn't as bothered by color as he is by application. "Smoky eyes--when done right are great--very sexy and attractive but when done wrong they look a total mess," he says. "Seek professional guidance before trying at home."

    6. Rosy cheeks:
"As far as make-up goes, I think rouge is for old ladies," adds Good Men Project's Belanger. "I think guys generally prefer the kind of make-up you don't notice is there, and since there's a lot that guys don't notice I think women have a lot of leeway."

Getty ImagesGetty Images7. Two-toned lips:Remember Kim Mathers? She was almost as famous for her lip liner issues as she was for being defamed by Eminem. According to our dude survey, the pucker problem was more serious. "When I see thin lines drawn around a pair of lips, I think: Is this part of some gang initiation rite?" says Cury.

    8. Glitter:"Women need to be judicious with it," says Cury. "It¹s like any good seasoning. You shouldn't shake it all over. It can overwhelm the main course." That being said, he's not opposed to a heavy sprinkle of cleavage glitter. Figures.

I'd rather have a male to love me for my natural look, than one who likes what he sees with makeup. I don't even wear a lot of makeup so this is not a problem for me

I think true beauty is in your natural looks ladies. It's also within you. I don't think there's anything wrong with a little make up to enhance natural features, but when you cake it on and start looking like a clown, to me that just shows a lot of self-consciousness. I'm not a sexist. I love women and your body's are sacred; so excuse my language but if your walking around like some sort of carnival freak, think about taking that sl** powder off. Who gives a s***? If someone's not going to accept you for your true beauty, inside and out, their just dirt on the bottom of your heels, boots, or whatever you wear. When I think about parents who let their little 10 or 12 year old girls walk about like they're going down some sort of fashion runway, I seriously feel like puking.

I think the natural look is the best I always focus on only one part of my face. if you focus on all of it it's too much. I love my eyes, so that is the part I focus on the most

Contrary to the title, women do not necessarily 'love' these trends. I can't think of any of my gal pals that would be cut dead in any of these makeup looks.
      • Jiminy Lummox 4 months ago
        True, it's not the way I would want to go...;}

Who would want to be 'cut dead' in anything?
      • Katherine 4 months ago
The phrase is 'wouldn't be caught dead'

I think women who use botox to add cheek to look better are as stupid as stupid gets. Fat lips are a turn off unless they are natural. Alot of women looked much better before than after, and even some men have done this too.

Yes, collagen lips are so nasty!

Makeup should make the woman look better. But not applied in large quanities so as to be obvious.

Globs of moisturizer on and about my 'butt - ox' area seems to make it easier for me, and my boyfriend Bwarney Fwank concurs!!!

to many women trying to look like something they are not these days. Padded bras, lots of make up, shapers and wigs. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!! women hate men who lie, but yet they do it every day.

So true RSM. You make a very valid point.

Yup. This is the 2nd article I've noticed that's been reposted. I guess Yahoo underestimates our short term memory. Plus, look at the date it was posted originally.

I agree with the makeup issue but it's funny, if you don't get made up nicely, most men will look at the woman that is. Agree?
    • robert  •  Pleasanton, California  •  4 months ago
What about these dudes with quarter sized plugs in their earlobes. Dizguztink!
    • dijb  •  4 months ago
I know most men will hate this but give me a man in a suit and tie any day. A tie on a man is so-o-o sexy - women just can't carry that look off. I don't need to see a man bare-chested or in tight jeans, just let my imagination take care of that part. Hooray for suits & ties.

two toned lips look horrible! the only women who wear that are the ones that go to a "Family Adams" audition.

Men say they want a "natural" look...They don't really want to see a woman with no makeup, they want said makeup to look natural...Big difference there...
    • Jennifer N  •  Sarasota, Florida  •  4 months ago
There is nothing "natural" about makeup. And celebs with the "natural look" that men go gaga for are wearing: primer below their foundation, and often two colors of foundation, powder, rouge, at least one face sculpting shade of darker color than skin, highlighting powder, eye shadow primer, eye liner, 3 to 5 colors of eyeshadow for a more dimensional look, lip liner, and lipstick, and even lipgloss over the lipstick...and still, it's called "natural" as long as the colors are neutral. Men are fools.

I quote Mae West: "I dress for women; I undress for men." Most women DO NOT put on make-up to impress men, but to out do other women. What a man thinks of her make-up rarely enters into it as... if for no other reason... what the hell do men know about make-up?
    • a Yahoo! Local User  •  4 months ago
Okay, this might only pertain to the women out there, but I am SO SICK of "low cut" pants for women! They might work if you have huge hips, and want to show off the "tramp stamp" but for the rest of us, NO and it's not just jeans, I mean even most "business" pants have adopted it. It's like either we have to settle for a wedgie or pulling our pants up all day long.

If men don't like this look, then why do so many men date women that have this particular look? Also, it seems that (at least in hollywood) when a man leaves his normal looking wife, he cheats on her with someone that has all the bad looks stated above. And yes, this story did run 7 months ago.
