Women tend to think that red is the trickiest lipstick shade to pick, but I've always found the perfect nude to be the most elusive shade out there. You have to factor in so many variables, including your skintone, your undertones and what type of nude you want (more pinky, more peach or more beige). So if you're still searching for that perfect subtle-but-not-too-subtle shade, check out makeup artist Emily Kate Warren's tips for choosing which of the season's hottest new nude lipsticks is perfect for you.
For fair skin:
Make sure to choose a shade that has a touch of champagne-colored shimmer to warm up the color of your lips. "This will ensure that your mouth doesn't wind up looking whited-out," explains Warren. Try Chanel's new Rouge Coco Shine Lipstick in Biarritz or Clarins limited edition Rouge Hydra Nude Lipstick in Nude Rose (shown above). Both have the perfect balance of pale rose and beige so they truly look just a step above your natural lip color.
For medium skin:
You have two choices when it comes to choosing a nude for medium skintones-you can either go for a true beige or take a pinkier nude route-it just depends on the type of look you're going for. For the former, Estée Lauder Pure Color Lipstick in Café Chic, and Nars Lipstick in Tzigane (shown above) are caramel-colored nudes with very little pink in them. However, if you want a little more rosiness, Warren likes Cover Girls' new Lip Perfection Lipstick in Delish. Not only is the color spot on, but it's creamy texture and opaqueness makes the matte formula spread on flawlessly.
For dark skin:
Warren advises sticking to brown-based nudes (no pink) that come close to your own skin tone. "You don't want a little contrast, so don't go too light or too dark," she warns. Her top picks this spring? Shiseido's Shimmering Rouge Lipstick in BR 304, a chocolate color that won't disappear on lips, or L'Oréal Infallible Le Rouge Lipcolour in Lingering Mocha (shown above). "This is a milk-in-coffee brown that is a touch on the lighter side in this category."
