Unwanted facial hair can be a really embarrassing thing for women, and we ladies are willing to spend lots of money and endure near-torture to have it removed by tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, and even getting laser hair removal. One method passed on by the fairer sex is shaving, since, well, it seems a bit harsh for her soft skin. Not to mention the old beauty rumor that shaving makes hair grow back darker and thicker than before.

"It's a total myth," celebrity aesthetician Kate Somerville told Style.com of the old wives tale. Not only is Somerville pro-razor, she used to be Elizabeth Taylor's personal cosmetic dermatologist, and says the actress shaved her own face too. Likewise, Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe was known to lather up with shaving cream for an extra exfoliated, hair-free face. (That's not Monroe on the left, but Italian actress Virna Lisi taking on her iconic look for this famous 1965 Esquire cover).

If you're considering shaving your mustache, Somerville suggests using a men's blade, specifically Gillette's Mach 3. And as with all shaving, we'd advise you prep your skin with warm water and a rich, creamy shaving lotion, and proceed with caution!

Would you consider shaving your face like a man? And if you've tried it before, how were the results?
