Michelle Obama takes London! The dresses, the jewels, AND what she wore to meet the Queen

Ap PhotoAp PhotoBarack Obama and his wife departed for the UK earlier this week, and, while the president is tending to serious business-- the G20 economic summit in London and, from there, a week of meetings in five different countries--Michelle Obama is along for more jovial pursuits. She's playing high-style dress up, sitting for tea, giving official gifts, and even meeting the Queen (see image, left).

So, what is she wearing? Thus far, no big surprises: She's sticking to favorite designers Jason Wu, Thakoon, and J.Crew; her usual cool color palette; kitten heels; pearls and brooches, and as for beauty, minimal makeup and soft hair. She looks feminine, stylish, and appropriate, but also totally safe. The only outfit I found rather dull and matronly is the Isabel Toledo ensemble she chose to meet the Queen. There was something almost uniform-like about its dull black and white, the skirt is an awkward length, and although Mrs.O did cover her arms with an Azzedine Alaïa cardigan and the look is fitting for the event, I think she can do better. (See our slideshow below for more details on the first lady's European wardrobe.)

In other Michelle Obama news, recent polls show her U.S. favorability ratings are through the roof (76 percent of us like her, up 28 points since last summer). And, during this, her maiden voyage overseas, the world has continued its obsession with every facet of how she looks. On the trip so far, large crowds have gawked and chanted her name wherever she goes, reporters have asked exhaustive questions about her beauty regimen, and the press have compared her ceaselessly to Jackie Kennedy.

Let's face it, that's a lot to live up to.

More tidbits: She's getting better at giving. According to Time, the Obamas gave the Queen an iPod as a gift; it contained footage of her visit to the United States in 2007 (much better than the unusable DVD's they presented Gordon Brown last month). The Queen, meanwhile, gifted the Obamas "a silver framed photo of herself and her husband, as she does all visiting dignitaries," according to the same source.

Why someone would think it is ok to comment on our REAL FIRST Lady's butt is beyond me. Only a gay person would find that news worthy. Those of us who are married to and live with a woman know that that is not dinner conversation or magazine conversation for that matter. That is gay conversation. Mrs Obama's butt is none of your business unless you are married to her, then it is for your pleasure and your pleasure alone. There are too many gays in the media with nothing to do but be amazed at what a butt should look like. To all gays, leave her alone and stop hating what you do not have: God given female body.

The reason I am making comments is not that I care at all what she wears... it is that the media will say she looks good (make that TERRIFIC!!!!!) no matter what the truth is. As will her supporters. Gov. Palin did not knock my socks off. Mrs. Bush (43) seemed to dress nicely and seemed to be a nice person. But it is clear to me that our current First Lady is getting undeserved fashion praise... because the media want to make her into something she is not... because the majority of reporters agree with the Obamas' views. Wearing a tight sweater and a mismatched wrinkled skirt disqualifies you as a fashion idol. Praise her for her mind, her success or her opinions, if you agree with them. But to make ridiculous ascertions that she is a fashion trendsetter reveals more about the reporters than it does the subject.

What a thrill to finally have a first lady who is intelligent, beautiful and gracious. She is a wonderful representative for our country and women in general. Just love that all the Republicans on this site are so jealous and racist. They couldn't say a nice thing if their lives depended on it. Hope you don't turn too green with all your envy and hatred!

She dresses appropriately, but it irks me when I hear reports about how fashionable she is. She is not THAT fashionable.

with the economy the way it is, why is everyone worried about what the first lady is wearing, in my opinion who cares !!!! and who is paying for the clothes? p.s. if your gonna show something off at least make it something worth looking at.

Her hair needs help. Especially when she knows she is to travel. A hairdresser to go with her to comb her hair now and then, OR wear a hairdo that will keep her hair tidy and more presentable, like a chignon at the tape of ner neck for instance. I am glad she did not wear a sleveless dress though!

Michelle and Camilla could go clubbin’ together in their doughty, boring styles. "Hey Camilla let's wear our purls tonight ok??"
    • Steven  •  3 years 2 months ago
Pity she has absolutely no sense of style she can call her own. She's definitely trying too hard to mimic Jackie Kennedy. If her goal was to look retro, then she's more than succeeded. All hail the First Frump.
