New Jersey may ban the Brazilian wax

New Jersey has long been known for major hair (blame Bon Jovi and mall bangs for that one)-and a recent bit of news isn't doing much to help that rep.

In a move that's sure to freak out hyper-groomed women in the state, New Jersey's Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling is considering a proposal to ban Brazilian bikini waxes-a response to the complaints of two women who claim they were injured and hospitalized from botched jobs (ouch!).

Don't suffer the same pain, here are 5 tips to getting a great wax.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the up-close-and-personal waxes have actually always been illegal, but the statute wasn't explicitly spelled out. The new proposal would make things perfectly clear by outright banning, ahem, "genital waxing."

The board is set to meet, and presumably vote on the ban on Brazilians, on April 14th. If you live in Jersey, we suggest booking your next (and possibly last) wax before then-and stocking up on a good depilatory just in case. (We like Veet Spray On Hair Removal Cream.)

Related: Rumor has it, male bikini waxing is on the rise.

Ahhhh kids beware goverment is slowly creeping in and taking away our rights...It's just the beginning. What happened to a women's right to make decisions about her body? A few years ago NJ banned sunny side up eggs! There was so much public outrage and in your face ordering of sunny side up eggs that the state legislature had to over turn the law. Ladies it's up to us!! Speak out and just say NO it's our choice!

That's too extreme. Some people would start doing the procedure at home and then really injure themselves. People should use common sense. If you have very sensitive skin or have skin allergies, why get any wax job?

Those two women should have done their research. I don't see anybody banning plastic surgery and people have died from those kinds of surgeries. Real crazy of Jersey.

Hairy genitals are the way of the future! I am all for the genital waxing ban! Hahaha!

I doubt they'll get away with it. Don't we have some sort of inalienable right to our bodies or something?

It is already banned, they voted No last week when presented with a position paper from the ASSP to permit Brazilian, Chest and Back waxing, The NJ Board is not discussing this further but our hope is that by faxing the AG's office Division of Law dept we can get them to over turn this before Corzine signs it off.! Please us fight back:

yeah i think this is a personal decision, but what is bizarre to me that it is already illegal? but not clear enough- seriously how is it illegal if it already happens all over the u.s.a ?

No wonder this country is in a mess. Everyone spent their home equity for a lame arse wax job...

Hey, Note: Hair grows back. Money does not!

I find it hard to believe that they are going to pass this. I am going to school for cosmetology, and I do not see how a state can decide for men and women on what they can or can't do with their body. It should be the establishments responsibilty. Not the whole state. That is lame.

Before they ban Brazillian waxing (if they do), they should propose an alternative, so people don't just keep doing it anyway, especially if it's so "dangerous".

Please note that none of the depilatories linked to this article by the author are safe for use in the genital/perianal region, which is the whole point of brazilian waxing. Just a little note of caution.

How it became hip to have all your pubic hair ripped out is beyond comprehension. It used to be considered a rite of passage into womanhood to get pubic hair, and now it's something to be ashamed of? My husband doesn't want me to look like a 10 yr old girl down there, and I don't want to go back to looking like one either. If a man wants a grown woman to look pre-pubescent, completely bald, that creeps me out. If it's banned, I'm sure women will find some way to accomplish complete deforestation. They could do at-home waxing with their friends, during a slumber party!

Is this for real? I get brazilian bikini waxes every 4 weeks regularly and I cannot imagine having them banned. If two women were hospitalized from botched waxes then those establishments who did the wax job should be fined or shut down. Banning brazilian bikini waxes throughout the state is NOT the answer.
