What Not to Wear to Your Office Holiday Party

It's that time of year-when you get to gussy up and celebrate the season at your company holiday party. But, as much as you may want to dress to the nines, always remember an office party is more like a day at work than a night out with friends. You'll be sure to stay on your boss' good side this year by following these five tips.

1. Don't Show Too Much Skin
Holiday parties are often superfun shindigs, especially if you love your co-workers, but as much as you want to celebrate in a killer outfit, never forget you're at a work event and be sure to dress accordingly. If a skirt would be considered too short or a top considered too low-cut for the office, it's too revealing for your office party as well.

2. Do Wear Appropriate Undergarments
Visible bra straps and panty lines are fashion mistakes in general, but they're especially bad at an office party. If your dress requires a strapless bra, get one. If you're not looking as smooth under your dress as you'd like, look into a pair of Spanx (Target even carries a lower-priced line made by Spanx!). It's a festive night and you should arrive looking your best, and that starts with a proper foundation under your clothes.

3. Do Wear Comfortable Shoes

We love dazzling party shoes as much as the next woman, but even if your office party will be featuring a sit-down dinner, you'll still need to walk around and mingle before and after food is served. Nothing says fashion victim like a woman hobbling on a pair of strappy sandals that are digging into her feet.

4. Don't Go Over-the-Top
Shimmery metallics, sequins, and serious statement jewelry might be big trends this season, but you don't want to look like part of the party decorations. Keep things festive with a killer dress, but remember an understated look is best and save the bling for the tree.

5. Don't Pull a 180 with Your Look
Your office party ensemble should showcase you at your most put-together. If you're a wild child who dresses conservatively at the office, don't use your holiday party to show off your tattoos and nose ring. Keep in mind that while you may be celebrating outside the office, you're still basically at work.

Remember, if you're wondering whether or not your dress is okay to wear, chances are you already know the answer: It isn't.
