One Million Moms Attacks Urban Outfitters for Lesbian Kiss in Catalog

One Million Moms strikes again! The same homophobic group who tried and failed to get lesbian talk show host Ellen DeGeneres removed from being JC Penney's spokesperson has now targeted retail chain Urban Outfitters. Why? Because UO dared to show two women kissing in their new catalog. According to the Advocate, One Million Moms posted the following information on their Facebook page:

WARNING! The April 2012 catalog from Urban Outfitters has begun arriving in home mailboxes the last couple of days. On page two of this catalog is a picture of two women kissing in a face holding embrace! The ad and catalog are clearly geared toward teenagers. Before your child has a chance to read the newest Urban Outfitters catalog call to unsubscribe from their mailing list at 1-800-282-2200, and then throw it away. When you call be sure to let them know why you are unsubscribing. Tell them you will also no longer shop at their stores if you hear this type of advertising continues. The content is offensive and inappropriate for a teen who is the company's target customer.

Thus far, Urban Outfitters has made no comment on the photograph.

We have a feeling Urban Outfitters published this photo merely to be provocative. As alternative as the company tries to act, UO's president, Richard Hayne, donated thousands of dollars to Rick Santorum's senatorial campaign, and we all know where he stands on gay issues. Furthermore, when Urban Outfitters sold t-shirts in support of marriage equality in 2008, they ended up taking them off the shelves once conservative people complained.

But we say: why not have a photo of a lesbian kiss in their catalog? No one would notice if a man and woman were kissing in the catalog, so we don't see why two women kissing should raise a problem. Abercrombie & Fitch recently featured a much more graphic ad with two men kissing in a shower. It seems like more and more brands are using their ads and catalogs to reach out to their gay consumers, even at the risk of alienating shoppers who may not approve.

What do you think of the latest Urban Outfitters photo?
