Person tries to sell Missoni Target boots for $31,000 for college education

These Missoni for Target boots only cost $35 in stores, but sold out fast. Photo courtesy of TargetThese Missoni for Target boots only cost $35 in stores, but sold out fast. Photo courtesy of TargetThe Missoni for Target frenzy continues! While many consumers weren't able to purchase the items they wanted or had their online orders canceled, those who got to stores early scooped up nearly everything in sight and listed them moments later on eBay for much higher than their original retail prices. One $40 throw blanket was receiving bids for over $250! Over $35,000 items were listed on the auction site within 24 hours and designer Margherita Missoni urged shoppers to not fall prey to opportunistic eBayers.

"You guys! Very silly to buy #missonifortarget on ebay for 3 times the price!! For that money go out and get M Missoni!" Missoni tweeted. And she's completely right. Why get caught up in the hype and pay hundreds of dollars on a low-quality Target item when you could buy REAL MISSONI pieces for that price? It makes no sense! Which is why one seemingly nuts eBayer has left us completely dumbfounded.

Tammy Lyn of Tulsa, Oklahoma has listed a pair of Missoni for Target Venetian Rainboots for the Buy-It-Now price of $31,000. She purchased the rubber wellies in a Target store for $34.99. "I would like to turn these rainboots into a a rainy day fund for my youngest child, who has just begun her freshman year of college," Lyn wrote in the auction listing. Her outrageous auction caught the eye of CNN, who asked her about her motives. "We have lived frugally and have some savings, but like most Americans, it's just not enough to cover college, retirement, and life at this point," Lyn told CNN. "Missoni mania looked like the perfect opportunity for a miracle." She is certain the boots will earn her a great deal of money. "I've had offers for them, but I'm sticking with my listing."

As for how she came up with the figure of $31,000, Lyn says the list price will cover her daughter's tuition for one year. Then she's got several Missoni for Target shower curtains, toss pillows and scarves that she plans to list to pay for subsequent college years. We think she's a little cuckoo. Yes, Missoni for Target items are in demand and selling beyond their original price tags, but there are so many items from the collection listed on eBay that shoppers are realizing the line is not as limited as they once thought. We've noticed that many auction ending bids are dropping to only $10 or $20 above retail value.

While we doubt anyone would be willing to shell out $31,000 for these rubber boots, perhaps some college institution or wealthy investor will take notice of Tammy Lyn's auction and offer her daughter some scholarship money.

      1. maybe pick a cheaper school
      2. have her daughter (assuming she actually has one) apply for a cheaper school or
      3. do 2 years at a community college and then transfer to a 4 year school.
      4. apply to a college near home.

what a crazy way to raise money.

It's such a sickness to be so set on Anything to the point of ignoring reason to aquire it. People crushed over Cabbage Patch dolls and Emo Tickle me dolls in the distant past, people stabbed over and robbed after waiting in line for hours to pick up the 'latest, greatest' game console. It's JUST STUFF! Over inflated, made in China, doesn't enrich your life one bit stuff! I thank my parents over and over for teaching me about quality over 'name' and substance over 'fluff'.

$31,000 for ONE YEAR of tuition??? If you don't have money, that's just insane. I go to a state school here in California. Tuition as an undergrad is about $3,400 a semester (which I feel is outrageous) but $31,000 would cover over four years as an undergrad. I'm currently in grad school, where my tuition is about $4,100 a semester. With books and expenses, it'll be about $9,000 a year (not counting living costs). So I'll be getting my MASTER'S for less than $20,000 in tuition, and she expects someone to pay money for her daughter to go to a school where one year costs more than a 2 year grad program? No freaking way.

Greedy, greedy greedy. What she meant was she has the money but wants to keep it and let everyone else pay for her daugher's education.

Tammy, if you are hoping, as the article suggests, that a college admissions officer or wealthy investor will "notice" you and give you the money...

Any "notice" you receive from them will likely be the kind you don't want. I would not be eager to admit your child were I the admissions officer at the unfortunate institution you are hoping to inflict your child upon.

You might as well be playing the lottery to pay for her education. You likely have better odds in the lottery than getting a 31,000 dollar bid for an item that can be had cheaper elsewhere. Do you understand supply and demand at all? If you had a rare coin/stamp, antique car, etc, perhaps you'd be in the game, but will anyone be getting thirty-one thousand dollars for their Valentino Beanie Baby or their unopened bag of Miracle-Gro potting soil? It's UNOPENED!!

Sigh. Again, you're doing her no favors.

And for people saying 31,000 isn't that much for public college nowadays, especially for a good education!" you must be getting duped. The PRIVATE university that I want to eventually get into is $10,000 a year plus room and board. You don't have to go to Harvard or Yale, and spend enough money to buy a house and a half to get a good education. Period.

      Sheesh. People these days.

WHY is ONE YEAR of tuition that much money??? Are classes held in a medieval fortress with solid gold books?? AND it's her freshman year! If you can't afford it, you don't need to be there. There is no sense in getting your associates degree at a university if you can't afford it. Get your associates at your local community college, and then transfer to the university of your choice. I can't afford the university I want to go to, so I'm taking care of basics at a community college for a fraction of the price. Some people just have no sense at all.

I seriously don't get it..we're talking about ugly zig zags....The Pink Glass Swan rears its tacky head again...in a Target... could it all be any tackier? I think not. (and let's not even discuss the amount of slave labor involved. Poor taste all around.)

My son goes to a state school and $31,000 would probably pay for all four years plus dorm fees and the meal plan. Sending your kid to a school that costs that much is NOT "living frugally."
Anyone who would pay $31,000 for a pay of $35 rain boots is insane. I seriously doubt she's going to get anywhere near that amount especially as I've heard that Target is restocking some Missoni items. If she'd sold them for maybe $100 I could see that but $31,000! If anyone pays this, shame on them.

      Anyone saying that 30k a year is extravagant hasn't been paying attention to college prices. In state tuition for a local STATE SCHOOL is 18k a year. Private institutions in my state tend to run about 30k. If you want an engineering school many of those run 40k+. If she can get the money, good for her. No harm in trying. I don't think it'll work though ^^;

I can't believe the gall of this woman, expecting someone to reward her for going to Target by paying for her child's tuition? She's being incredibly selfish and utterly ridiculous.
