Shocking discovery of the day: 4 in 5 people look bad in black clothing

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesFor many women, black is a go-to color when it comes to wardrobe choices, because it can be very slimming and it goes with everything. But experts say black is not the universally flattering hue we all thought it was, and that often it can actually make you look old. Ouch!

The main problem with black, according to color consultants, is that it emphasizes dark lines, wrinkles and shadows on your face--sometimes when they're not even really there. Colorist Jules Standish says, "the effect can be as serious as making women feel drained, self-conscious and introverted." To avoid this, she advises ditching hats, scarves and turtlenecks in black in exchange for brighter colors. And if you do want to wear a black top, she says to opt for one with a low neckline, or add a colorful necklace.

If you have a warm skin tone, you may want to avoid black because it actually detracts from your healthy glow and can make you look tired and aged. For women with pale, cooler coloring (think Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman, Liv Tyler, Dita von Teese, Nigella Lawson) black can be quite flattering.

Want to do a quick test? Standish offers up this advice: "Hold the colour up against your face, stand in front of the mirror and look for dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes or lines on the face that are highlighted. If there are no dark areas or shadows, you can probably wear black close to your face and look great - otherwise, change your ways."

Will you take this info to heart, or do you think this is pointless advice? [Daily Mail]

I wear nothing but black, other than a few red accessories that I'll wear sometimes. Looks great on me.

80% of clothing for plus sized women is black...so black it is! Do they still make colors?

On 'Daily Planet', there was a scientific and measurable study done on birds that involved putting fake black feathers on the chest of some birds. These 'some' birds that had the fake black feathers on their chests, were the only ones getting sex and attention from other birds. Thus, proving that wearing black increases your looks and chances of sexual activity. Whoever did this 'Shocking discovery of the day: 4 in 5...etc' study is a complete idiot. Good luck to the people not wearing black because of this idiotic study that is completely wrong.

Heeheehee. Black is my very favorite color. The only dark in my face it accentuates is the dark circles under my eyes and my black eyeliner. I try to maintain as pale a complexion as possible.

I love those jewel tones around my face. Black is saved for the skirts and slacks- usually. I'm a pasty pale blonde and have to be very careful what I wear or I blend in with the wallpaper. Black around the face is best on me when paired with a colorful over shirt or something colorful ( God bless beads are in!) I am too well blessed through the chest to wear ruffles or big scarves around my neck, turtlenecks emphasize my extra chin.

Anne Hathaway DOES look great in black. Though the people with a lighter, warmer compleaxion... different story altogether. It just brings their whole 'sunny' side down. (I'd know ;))

Though wearing colors is just so... brighter. Though they would look tacky on people like Hathaway. I think the trick is to find the colors that match you. =)

I love black. Wear it a lot.

Lindsay Lohan would look pretty crappy in ANY color if you REALLY LOOK at that thing.

It really is about skin tone. I'm fair with pink undertones, and black is very flattering on me. My olive complected friend cannot wear it at all next to her face, it makes her look sallow.

I guess that I'm one of the few people to look good in black (according to the article). I always wear black (mainly b/c of years as a m-u artist in retail...that's the required standard). Anyway, I always try to veer away from black in the stores when shopping for new clothing, then there's the "black" moment when the sales associate brings me a black outfit and it's like manna from Heaven. The associate (and whomever is with me) likes it the best. Even I agree. It IS my best color! I can't escape it (or it can't escape me). I guess it's not all that bad, I never have to think about matching up my outfits! :-)

I agree with "not so good examples". I still enjoy wearing black. It does make you feel and look slimmer..

I agree with the article -- black is awful on most skin tones. I'll throw my hat in the ring here and say the same for pure white. Yes, it reflects light and all that but... its still a wash-out color that most people can't pull off well.

Anybody agree with me on this?

(Sure wish I didn't have to wear a black/white uniform to work. I look like Frankenstein's Bride! Maybe I'll opt for a big white streak in my hair just to break up the monotony!)

Year in year out, for Japanese women, old and young alike, black fashion never goes out of style.

My complexion is close to Liv Tylers so i guess I am in the clear for white.
