Are Skinny Jeans Making You Sick?

Are high heels bad for your health?

When one Brooklyn woman approached her doctor with excruciating leg pain and overall numbness, the physician's first questions were quite shocking. "Do you wear tight clothes? Control-top pantyhose? Tight belts?" he asked. When she nodded yes, the doc knew he had found his culprit.

Dr. Irving Friedman told the Wall Street Journal that constricting fashions, such as cinch belts and skinny jeans, can compress a major nerve (the femoral cutaneous) that runs laterally from the abdomen through the thigh. The result of continuous constriction can cause a chronic neurological disorder called Meralgia paraesthetic, and severe numbness and pain in your thighs.

We first brought you the news that high heels may be doing you harm, but now we're adding skinny jeans to the list of sartorial health hazards.

"Anything that puts pressure on that nerve can cause it," Dr. Friedman said of the nervous disorder, which is common among police officers who carry heavy guns on their hips and ballet dancers who work in tight tutus.

Connecticuit's Dr. Octavio Bessa has coined the phrase "tight pants syndrome" for the nervous and digestive problems he sees caused by matchstick pants. WSJ reports that Dr. Besso "was seeing 20 to 25 patients a year, usually middle-aged or older men, suffering from abdominal discomfort, distention, heartburn and belching a few hours after eating." Someone tell Justin Theroux to invest in a pair of wide-leg trousers asap.

Skinny jeans have also been accused of causing yeast infections, back pain, and ugly thigh lesions.

Will you be ditching skinny jeans and spanx, or is pain really the price of beauty?

Ugh. Those skinny leg jeans are hideous. I don't know how anyone could get a size that fits right. If they got them to fit their thighs, the butt would be too big. So they end up with unnaturally constricted thighs and walk funny. Bizarre.

I used to work in cleaning and wore a belt cliped around my waste with multiple bottles of cleaner in the pockets. It made me violently ill after a while, and I had to stop wearing it while working. Crazy how much compression can set off your bodies natural balance!

Haven't folks ever heard of Spandex/Lycra? Get something with a little stretch. And remember: I don't care who you are, "muffin tops" are NOT ATTRACTIVE! Yuck! Put it away and buy clothing that fits! I

Big big difference between 'skinny', and too damned small. too many women obsessed with their weight try to wear jeans, tights, etc a couple sizes too small for them. this even looks bad.

Honestly it comes down to how the pants fit that person. Personally when I was a great deal younger prior to having 2 kids I wore a size 0 to 2, depending on how they were made. You can buy the same size pants in 2 different brands and they will fit differently (1 will fit good while the other may be tight) I noticed this while shopping for new jeans. Skinny jeans are fine if you buy the size that fits you, but skinny jeans were not made for everyone.

The real problem is trying to find jeans that "AREN'T" skinny's today. I am no longer in a size 0 to 2, actually I am in a size 8 now. I am not ashamed of it, and I do not in any way try to fit into a size that is to small. So many people today have various shapes and with the market being flooded so-to-speak with skinny jeans the "average" person struggles just to find a decent pair of jeans/pants to wear.

The dramatic or rather over dramatic styles of designers producing clothing lines that in a sense are designed so that you have to be excessively skinny to fit in, has caused so many issues with girls/women especially. My 18 year old daughter has countless friends at school whom "refuse" to eat so they can fit in the "current trends" that are flooded in the market. To see that teenagers are starving themselves just to stay in that "social circle/lifestyle" is sad.

As far as the pain associated with skinny jeans I can honestly say that any constricting clothing (not just skinny jeans) can cause pain. I cannot wear items that constrict as I already have lower back problems due to a messed up disk in my back. Also because of this bad disk, wearing heels has been troublesome as well.

Anyway that's my 2 cents worth....

That's what happens when you wear a size too small. They make skinnies in all sizes, they should be tight but not constricting. Also, take into account that jeans shrink when you wash them over and over.

No, I'm blessed with slim hips and legs, so I don't have a problem with skinny jeans. Boot cut is still the most comfortable.

In ISLAM, it is also addressed 1436 years ago, for men and women, to wear such clothes, in which your body shape should not appear, neither those clothes should be transparent. now doctors are address that scientifically ...NO doubt ALLAH (GOD) knows everything.

I see too many gals stuffed into their skinnies. They resemble fat sausages in casings. That could hurt.

I heard that girls who wear skinny jeans too often can easily get yeast infections mainly because the pants are so tight creates extra moisture (sweat) on the skin in the vaginal area. More moisture means excessive growth of bacteria, you might think so what just take a bath right? Well true but during the time your wearing them that bacteria is multiplying and before you know you have a yeast infection or at least really bad vaginal oder. But that's what i heard, i wouldn't really know cause i dont do skinny jeans..makes my legs look bigger. Looks good on some girls, as for guys? Dont really like it on them.

Just wash yourself down there thoroughly and you won't have yeast infections.

      • Dai Dai 2 months ago
Yeah it would anything too tight would probably cause these problems

Who wears them tight enough to have this problem?!
Rule # 1 of wearing tight pants: if you have to lay down on the bed to fasten them, they are too tight!

Oh. Oops. I thought you meant "sick" in a metaphorical sense, as in, "Are you getting sick of seeing them everywhere?" Um, yeah, they are getting a little too common.

It's not about the skinny jean, it's about the size you wear them in. I love skinny jeans and they aren't uncomfortable at all because I know my size! I'm really petite so it's probably easier for me too. Some body types (like a pear shape) can't fit into skinny jeans because the way they are made.

I hate skinny jean? Fashion designer people needs to know that this is not a perfect world and not everyone can wear skinny jean. Skinny jeans are made for skinny people and it only looks good and skinny people and its not made for fat people and it made them looks ugly...lol

Skinny jeans don't hurt me at all, and I've been wearing them for a straight year. But then again, maybe I don't get pairs that are quite as tight as the fashion.

I would say just don't wear skinny jeans all the time and don't wear them tight. I wear a girdle or spanx and haven't noticed any problems.
