How to Store and Organize Your Shoes

    By Angie Cox for GalTime.com

Too many shoes, so little space! Too many shoes, so little space! There are countless ways to store footwear, and the ones that work for you will depend on the space you have at your disposal. If space is not an issue, one can be very creative with footwear storage, displaying them in all sorts of attractive ways in close proximity to the rest of your clothes.

It's best to keep your footwear visible and easily accessible because you will tend to forget about items that are packed away. Out of sight, out of mind! So be sure to think about the following points:

    • Don't hide your boots during boot wearing season: During boot wearing season, stand your boots on the floor of your closet for easy access. Line tall boots with boot trees or upright supports to keep their shape. Your boots will last longer, and things look neat and tidy that way. Keeping tall boots boxed and far away from your clothing is just not practical.

    • The "easy access" front door cache: Some people like to keep shoes that are in constant rotation by the front door (or in the garage), and store the rest in their wardrobe. This makes rushing out the front door easy, but you also run the risk of forgetting about your other pairs of shoes. Make sure you rotate the shoes at the front door/and in the garage.

    • Swapping out seasonal footwear: When space is at a severe shortage, we are forced to pack away non-seasonal footwear for half a year. Store your shoes in plastic containers and pack them away under the bed, in the garage, attic, and cupboard, or in another room. Keep an inventory of the styles close to hand, so that you don't forget what you have in storage. This prevents purchasing unnecessary duplicates.

Here are some fast, neat, inexpensive and practical footwear storage solutions that I often suggest to my clients as I edit their wardrobes:

    • Built in shoe racks: Custom made closets often have conveniently built in shoe racks or shelves. Sometimes these racks do not accommodate tall boots, so keeping them shaped and on your closet floor is a good solution.

    • Standalone shoe racks: These come in all shapes and sizes. Find the appropriate size racks and position them where you need them: on the closet floor, in the coat closet, by the front door, and in the garage.

      • Shoe cubby: Cubbies are especially great because they look extra tidy. Position the cubby where it's most convenient.

      • Clear Shoe Boxes: Boxing and stacking shoes seems like an impractical idea, and to some extent that's true. You can't grab your shoes and go. But when space is at a premium, boxing shoes allows you to stack them neatly in one place, and they are easily identifiable. No scrounging around at the bottom of the closet trying to find a pair of matching shoes. You can stack boxes in an armoire, on the closet floor, or on shelves.

        • Baskets or Bins: Athletic shoes and rubber flip-flops do just fine stacked in a separate basket or bin.

I'm not overly fond of shoe holders that hang behind a door because the dirt of your shoes is best left close to the ground and away from your clothes.

It's important to store footwear in a great way for more than just aesthetic and practical reasons. Storing shoes properly protects them, and makes them look good for longer. How do you store your shoes? I'm sure you have some excellent solutions and we'd love to hear them!
