Takeaway tips from a professional makeup artist

CharlotteCameron.jpgWhen Charlotte Cameron, SELF's Assistant Accessories Editor, came to me a few months ago asking about "makeup lessons" I was pretty surprised. She has perfect skin and always looks great - I had no idea she barely wore makeup! So, I recommended Assumpta Clohessy - the same makeup artist who did the beauty team's makeup at this shoot - and asked her to report back on the experience. Here's what she learned:

After being photographed for a beauty story (and having my makeup professionally done) I realized just how much I didn't know about makeup application. I took a makeup lesson with the talented Assumpta Clohessy, who often works her magic for SELF shoots. Here are a few simple tricks that can make a surprising difference:

    1. One brush does not fit all. Sorry to say that when I actually did opt for a brush over my finger I'd been using one brush for pretty much everything. Now I have brushes for concealer, blush, and lips.

    2. Brush care: Wash your brushes occasionally. A little gentle shampoo and water will make a huge difference in application!

    3. Application: Light feathery strokes when applying concealer, the finish is noticeably more polished and natural.

    4. My new best friend: the individual eyelash curler. I squeeze hard on the outer lashes and apply mascara to really make the eyes pop.
