Target Shoppers Resort to Unusual Methods for Jason Wu

Jason Wu for Target created another online buying frenzy.Jason Wu for Target created another online buying frenzy.Jason Wu for Target launched late Saturday night and quickly sold out. Although the collection didn't cause quite the same frenzy as last fall's Missoni collaboration, frustrated consumers have gotten very creative in tracking down all their desired items.

Target has a strong social media presence, and the folks who run their Facebook and Twitter accounts were clearly prepared to do damage control on yet another hyped designer launch. Shoppers had one main concern: what time would the collection be available online? Just like with the Missoni launch, Target gave a vague response of "early morning," perhaps to avoid another site crash. Other customers asked about store availability and sizing information. Soon Twitter was crashing and Target searches were yielding that all-too-familiar "Oops" message. Not a good sign.

The Jason Wu cat print tote was one of the first items to sell out.The Jason Wu cat print tote was one of the first items to sell out. When the clock struck midnight EST, a few items were available online. @TargetStyle tweeted that the Milu cat print tote and matching scarf were available as were three dresses. But no one could find them. Target.com's search engine was not pulling up results for "Jason Wu" and when you clicked on the Jason Wu collection icon on the main page it just took you to a preview of the items. If you went to the women's dresses section you could see the Jason Wu styles. But rather than clicking on each item to purchase, you had to click on a tiny red plus sign to add to your cart-a new site component that confused even the most well-versed Target shoppers. The site seemed to have other issues as well. For one, the Jason Wu items were only visible to many people on Google Chrome, not Firefox or Safari browsers. Sometimes items were added to the cart only to disappear. Some shoppers had their orders canceled within minutes.

Hoards of consumers continued to swarm Facebook and Twitter until the Target reps couldn't keep up with their comments and complaints. Why couldn't they find the items they were willing to pay good money for during a recession? Why did Target trickle out the items forcing customers to place multiple orders that required many shipping fees? People were furious. You don't get between a lady and her Jason Wu! But then a shift happened. Shoppers began helping each other, scouring Target.com for items and sharing links via Target's social media outlets. Women were positively giddy that they outsmarted Target and were eager to help others score their Jason Wu items of choice. "The white dress is online! Click here!" a shopper wrote on Facebook. And while many consumers still had trouble, the sense of community was evident by scores of "thank yous" and happy reports of confirmed orders.

This white, flared Jason Wu dress was a favorite amongst online shoppers. This white, flared Jason Wu dress was a favorite amongst online shoppers. In the end the bad web experience was magnified with very limited merchandise up for grabs. Shortly after the midnight release, shoppers complained that sizes were already gone. Just hours later, items like the $19 cat print scarf were gone altogether. If you went to bed Saturday with hopes that "early morning" meant 8 a.m. you'd wake up to find only a handful of items left in size XL. In store was just as bad. Only select Target boutiques were stocked, and many with limited items and sizes. One shopper complained on Facebook that she got up early to be first in line, and only found nine Jason Wu items on the racks. Many stores imposed no shopping limits and some shoppers reported that men arrived early and filled up their carts with the intentions of reselling all the goods on eBay. Time for more damage control!

Here are some statements from Target Style's Facebook page:

-"About 1,200 stores had Jason Wu for Target items today. Stores will not be replenishing supplies. Apologies."
-"While we won't be restocking online today, please continue to watch Target Style on Facebook and Twitter for inventory updates."
-"We do anticipate additional items to become available within the next few weeks. Please watch Target.com for those items or Target Style Facebook and Twitter for updates."
-"Feel free to reach out if your order hasn't shipped by end of day Wednesday."

Target's social media people tried their darnedest to wrangle frustrated shoppers and maintain order. But finally shoppers took matters into their own hands, starting a Facebook group called Jason Wu for Target :: Swap, Sell & Buy." The group currently has 417 members attempting to locate the Jason Wu items they want, swap items for different sizes, and even take orders for strangers from their local store. Most of them would do anything but resort to buying from the greedy vultures on eBay. Speaking of, by noon on Sunday there were 3,200 Jason Wu for Target items listed on the auction site. 24 hours after the initial online launch there were over 12,000 items on eBay, some already having sold for three to eight times their retail value.

On a positive note, we placed two online orders late Saturday night and both were confirmed as shipped in their entirety today. So while merchandise was limited, shoppers will not likely be waiting several months for their orders or have many items canceled. And in addition to some extra items coming back on Target.com later this week, we're sure returns will help replenish some stock online and in stores. Can't wait till then? Avoid Target and eBay and head over the ultra-inviting Facebook swap page. At this point it's clear Jason Wu for Target shoppers are the most helpful of all.

Funny, people complain about being broke and no jobs. But they can always seem to rush out and buy the latest thing. it's always like that. very time a new electronic device comes out, lines are always out the door. People do whatever they can to get it because they "have to have it" and how dare they be seen without one. Same thing with clothing.Any time a new trend emerges, everyone rushes out to buy it. Makes me wonder where their priorities are.

Oh shut up. How do YOU know the ones doing this shopping were complaining about being broke with no job. YOUR pious thinking is really stupid

Obviously, Lakes Lady cannot empathize for those of us who have to work in order to put food on our table and clothes on our back. Lucky you, Lakes Lady, but don't dare degrade people who choose to be smart about their money :P

I don't understand the fascination with this designer. I work at Target and I thought his dresses were pretty plain, nothing special. I guess all the hype is due to Michelle Obama endorsing him? Just don't get the rage.

Your 100% right. For example that white dress pictured above...not so special no WOW factor at all. not to mention I'd never walk around with a cat on my bag.. O___o

I love Target for a lot of things......but NOT clothes.....you have to buy things 3 sizes bigger than anywhere else so they will fit......cheap stuff not cut straight with the grain of the fabric, poorly made, etc......I walk right by the clothes and don't even bother looking.....
      • Spawn32f 3 months ago
and plus when you wash it shrinks a couple of sizes too and when you dry it heck you better get real skinny quick cause that aint gonna fit afterwards lol

I agree with you totally unfortunately. Target is awesome, love it, but I don't go there for clothes ever!

The quality of the clothes was actually pretty good, I was surprised because I've seen other target collaborations. Anyhow, only got the cat t-shirt because I like cats. The white dress was actually beautiful and of better quality than anything I've ever seen in Target. Kind of kicking myself for not getting it since it's selling on ebay for more than double...

I can see buying an outfit because it looks good on you, or for the quality of the product; but for the name? Absolutely pathetic! As for re-selling it online; hey, if you can find someone dumb enough to pay you 3 or 4 times more for an item that is probably overpriced to begin with, go for it.

At least Target works with not so well know designers and helps them have their 15 minutes of fame. I'll wear Target clothes over Walmart clothes anyday!

The white dress looks cute but it has been my experience that the celebrity fashion line at Target runs small and I say that as a thin person and the quality is pretty poor. The fabric is horrible, itchy, thin and terribly cheap too. You're better saving your money and buying one really great designer Jason Wu item, even if it takes you a few years to save. Better than that ill-fitting less-than- Jason Wu design for Target that will sit in your closet or be donated to Goodwill that you bought just so you could say you own something Jason Wu. Sometimes the real thing is better and worth the wait. Just saying.

Targets should just put the items on EBay in the first place and then let people buy them online and LIMIT THE AMOUNT OF PURCHASES MADE FROM EACH ADDRESS. This would make it just a LITTLE bit easier for those of us who 1) do not have loads of money; 2) aren't able to get to store at opening hour; 3) don't want to fight the EBayers grabbing anything and everything (looked like a friggin closeout sale!). These stupid designer sales are bull. Minimum people actually able to get items, prices are still too high for much of items (not clothing particularly, but other). Good 'ole capitalism. Hope WU is happy with the results. His name is more out there now and he is a little richer for it. They should remove the advertisements since it is only a 1-3 hour sale on 1 day!!!! That is how these should be hyped, as 1-4 hours and 1-day sales. Forget anyone that is unavailable for those times or that day. I liked when they had designers (Mossimo, Mizrahi, etc.) on a regular schedule w/their products and not just a 1-day (generally 1-4 hours only in the end). It's mostly for resellers anyway!

I really don't understand why Target does these fashion lines the way they do. If they didn't limit the collections then there would be no issue with people buying the whole line at 8:00 AM just to sell it on eBay. I wanted one item from this collection and couldn't buy it online and our Target didn't carry any of it. I refuse to pay double or triple price for something just to make some greedy jerk richer. I feel dumb for even wasting a trip to Target in the first place and I will definitely not be bothering the next time they do this. It seems like Target is deliberately trying to either frustrate or disappoint their customers to create buzz and it's really putting me off on Target which is a store I really used to like.

I must have gotten lucky. I got to the store at 8 am Sunday morning, and got the one dress I wanted. I'll have to alter it slightly, but that's par for the course for me with my clothes since I'm so tall and built like a toothpick, so I'm hard to fit.

I was underwhelmed by this collection when I saw the pieces at Target, especially after so much hype. As was stated below, the clothes are PLAIN and cheap looking. I know it's Target but the stuff seemed poorly constructed. I also agree that the sizing tends to be off at Target. I would rather spend a little more or hit TJMaxx/Marshalls than to buy cheap "designer" clothing.
