The best beauty commercials ever! (video)

    by Joanna Douglas, Shine Staff

Sometimes we really appreciate going back to the basics. Is it just us or were the beauty commercials of the '70s, '80s, and '90s infinitely more fun than the ones today? Here are our favorite TV commercials that made us want to run out and buy what they were selling (and commit their clever slogans to memory). Enjoy watching and tell us your faves in the comments!

    1. Exclamation perfume! "Make a statement without saying a word."

    2. One of many Revlon spots with Cindy Crawford. These commercials were the best!

    3. Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash... with MTV VJ Martha Quinn!

    4. Are you Sure (deodorant). Or unsure?

    5. "There's a fragrance that's here today and they call it... Charlie!"

    6. Pantene shampoo. Kelly LeBrock says, "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful."

    7. Who wears short shorts? (Apparently someone who's be using Nair.)

    8. Designer Imposter perfume.

    9. Salon Selectives. "Like you just stepped out of a salon!"

    10. Truth be told, I still use my Caboodle and wish they still made them.

    11. Herbal Essences. "She's got the urge to Herbal!"

    12. Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. "I'm at my best."

    13. Christie Brinkley... the Prell girl!

    14. Miss Lee Press on Nails. We were so psyched when they launched this Junior version.

    15. Growing up I loved Rebecca Gayheart, so obviously Clairol's Glints was the first hair color I ever used, repeating to my parents, "It washes out in eight shampoos!"

    16. Enjoli let you "bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan," but still smell like a lady!

I remember Finesse, New Freedom (I know is not it not a beauty product, but for femenine use), Chantilly, Herbal Essences,Mink and Clairol shampoo and conditioner.

I saw these products commercials when I was a little girl and thought I wanted to use them when I grew up .

I enjoy the nostalgia of these commercials tremendously! I grew up in the 60/70's and I agree there was a humor and something more attainable about the approach...even the more glamourous ads seemed more gentle and kinder somehow. Or is it just me looking back with that older person mindset, I don't know. I suppose ads reflect what it takes to get the public's attention of course. There's so much competition out there...seems nothing is truly novel anymore, just improved versions of this or that...have to get attention in a very small time span...the time allotted... and do consumers pay attention for any period of time....I'm sure there are studies galore advertisers pay heed to to optimize their success. Seems like a give and take of influences to me. Steve, it's quite cool to know names of the talented people who put those ads together...kudos to them and to you for crediting them rightfully so!

I don't know about anyone else but I am commercialed-out! Too many on the tube and way too many on the radio stations. Remember, the gov't is doing all it can to keep us dumbed down. They don't want the U.S. to know any truth and they won't tell you in the advertisements that there is probably aluminum in most of the creams we use. Aluminum is something that the human body doesn't digest. It does cause cancer and it is in most deodorants. The one deodorant that does not have any aluminum is a deodorant stone. It works as well as any other you might use for perspiration. Knowledge is key, my friends. God Bless.

My faves were 4, 5 and 11... The Herbal Ad: 'I hope those boys show up for the body wash'...lol. Gotta love grandma, she's still got it!
And the sure, unsure one was kinda funny.
All the ads seem original and real...you can relate to the people and the products they advertise.

So strange... I tracked down the "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful." commercial yesterday to send as a joke to a friend... Then today, the commercial pops up again in this article. I had not thought of this commercial in years, then suddenly it crossed my path twice in two days. This seems to happen a lot... Something I have not thought about for a very long time pops up twice within a couple of days. Does anyone else have this same experience? Just wondering.

The Cindy Crawford Revlon spot (I'm 99% sure) was edited by David Smalheiser at First Edition Editorial in NYC (I was an editor there too). David was responsible for introducing the Technotronic "Move This" track when he put together a rough cut. Revlon went out and bought the rights to use it and it then became synonymous with the brand. That's how I heard it went down, anyway - correct me if I am wrong. David always had good taste in music - he deserves credit for this.

The Exclamation commercial was produced at Ketchum Advertising in NYC, produced by Don Faller (now at doublewide media in NYC), Theodora Borsen was the Creative Director (now at Theodora Design in NYC), and Alison DuMond (now Woodard) was the Art Director. It was Alison's first TV board! I was the A/V guy for KA at the time. It sold a lot units!

I think these commercials were fun for another reason...we weren't so damn sensitive and politically correct back then. Notice how no one accused Lee of trying to "w----" up our kids or teens when they brought out the junior line of Press-Ons? Try and bring that product out now and see what kind of reception you get...you'd be the target of a Dateline exclusive. Just look at the line of Shape-Ups geared towards kids. Let's just lighten up and enjoy life...I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's and 90's when we were more relaxed! :-)

Enjoli! I remember that perfume and that commercial. Also, Exclamation...unfortunately the perfume smelled horrible. All of those commercials bring back good memories!

I use to love that old back in the day Enjoli Commercial. I use to sing the "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and never ever, ever, let you forget your a man" to my husband when I got home from work on paydays. He got a kick out of that, but always reminded me how bigger his paycheck was lol. I still remember the words, but I'm retired now and hubby still works.

I was a sucker for the Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner; I loved the way it smelled.

I remember getting my Caboodle for Christmas one year; I believe it was purple and pink...loved it!

Now I will have that Enjoli commercial stuck in my head for days...just as I did back then. LOL
