Photo courtesy of MAC C …It's only the beginning of summer, but market research company NPD Group, Inc. has already calculated the top five best-selling lipsticks in the country this year. Lip color has been declining for nearly a decade, but NPD Group says the past 15 months have shown steady upward retail sales-perhaps we can thank stars like Gwen Stefani who rock red lips so well.
"Coming out of the recession, it seems that the consumers thirst for color and play was reawakened," said Karen Grant, vice president and senior global industry analyst, for the NPD Group. "In 2010, we saw the preference for rich as well as retro colors and in 2011 we are seeing new neutrals come to the fore. As the fashion industry increasingly features bold as well as understated lip statements on the runway and in advertisements, lip color appears to be getting its groove back."
The entire "lip segment" (this includes lip color, lip liner, lip gloss, and lip applicators) rose 7% to $185.2 million in department stores, selling 9.8 million units. These are the top five sellers:

- Lancome L'Absolu Rouge
- Clinique Long Last Soft Shine Lipstick
- Estée Lauder Pure Color Lipstick
- Chanel Rouge Coco Shine
