The New Gender-Bending Beauty Trend

Lady Gaga is such a follower. We kid, we kid. But most beauty insiders weren't that surprised by her drag-tastic performance at the VMA's (on left). Why, you ask? Well, because gender-bending, Victor/Victoria-style hair and makeup is "in" for fall.

From bold brows at Yves Saint Laurent to faux-sideburns at Dolce & Gabbana (on right), the winter 2011 runways were filled with stark looks that ran the gamut from handsome to down-right manly. And, with the exception of mini-pompadours and penciled arches, these looks are not the easiest to pull off.

So, while Gaga succeeded at raising eyebrows (while opting not to pluck her own), most women might want to road-test subtler styles before suiting up. You can use pomade to sculpt your next nape-of-neck bun. Or try a bronzer, instead of blush, to define chiseled cheekbones. Of course, you can also go all out and channel your testosterone-fueled alter ego.

What about you? Will you take your cues from Ms. Gaga's elaborate lesson that femininity (and masculinity) is only as important as you make it out to be, and try one of these androgynous looks? Or do you prefer pretty makeup and perky ponytails? We want to know!
