The Trends We Love That Men Secretly (And Not So Secretly) Hate

Now, we all know that we don't really dress for men, or even for ourselves. The fact of the matter is, we dress for other women. The sky-high heels we throw on are our way of being taller than our female counterparts, and proving to them that we can take more than they can. Not too many men really notice if we're wearing the this-season Charlotte Ronson dress, either. But sometimes, just sometimes, it's nice to know what men think of what we wear; we do date them, after all, and tell them when they've been wearing the same sweatpants three days in a row. So, after much study, here are the trends that make men run in the other direction, and the ones that he hopes you'll wear three days in a row.

15 chick flicks guys secretly love.

Hates: Most of what Lady Gaga wears
Accentuated shoulders and alien heels don't exactly make men feel warm and fuzzy, in fact, they might feel like they're dating the alien from Predator.

Loves: Anything that looks like it came from his closet
Wearing a mens shirt or an old band shirt might make him think of you in the morning, and put a big grin on his face.

    Hates: Leggings as pants
Although Lohan still wears them, and leggings are super easy to throw on when it gets cold, I've never heard of one man who likes the thick child-like "pants" girls pair with jean skirts and dresses...or with nothing at all. You're not at a ski lodge, ladies.

    Loves: Stockings
Chances are, the women your guy idolized growing up were of the pin-up persuasion, and they always rocked sheer stockings. They come in a multitude of colors and textures and make you feel much sexier than leggings will...hey, they never did Betty Paige wrong.

    Hates: Uggs
We have to be honest, we sort of hate them too, but plenty of girls still wear them everywhere. They might be way overplayed in our eyes, but men just find them ugly.

    Loves: Heels
They're not called *$#% Me Pumps for nothing, but there is a place to draw the line. Too much platform might channel Cherry the Stripper, and too little (a kitten heel, if you will), will remind him of Pam from The Office before she got a better stylist.

    Hates: High-waisted skirts
Maybe they remind him of his least-favorite principal from Catholic School, or maybe he hated that Maggie Gyllenhaal flick Secretary, but the high waist makes him want to run home to his mama.

    Loves: Mini-skirts
Mini-skirts, while not appropriate for the workplace, are fun if paired with the aforementioned sheer stockings.

    Hates: Bug-eyed sunglasses
Unless they have an unusual fetish for the movie The Fly (such a creepy film), having a serious conversation with you while seeing his entire reflection is your glasses is kind of a turn-off.

    Loves: Seeing your eyes
Eye contact makes up most of communication, especially when you're, um, trying to get somewhere with someone. There's that spark, the batting of eyelashes, etc...all of which cannot happen if you look like a beetle. That being said, they also like natural-looking eyes. Don't pile on the fake lashes and black liner to make up for the fact that you left your Pradas at home.

A good strategy for not getting any dates, and for blending into the rest of the "can't be bothered" camp of today's woman: wear Uggs, go bare-legged, and only wear the thick "can't see any leg" hose that are appropriate for a 5 YO girl.
So when going out to a bar, are you still dressing for other women, or are you then dressing for men? If the later, always go with the stockings, because most men do prefer them.

Stockings...Heels...Mini-Skirt...dead-on correct. We really miss the stockings that women used to wear. And no, your legs do not look better bare, so stop fooling yourselves.

My husband would never judge what I wore, because he likes what's underneath it all better. Though he does poke fun at my glittery Sketchers, BUT I LOVE THEM!!!

Omg Coug Girl glittery Sketchers?!?! Lmao bless you honey...we all have our quirks but that one takes the cake for me lol...

Hubby likes me without makeup so when I do have an occasion to wear it he is attracted. He does not care what I wear but when I do dress feminine he is sparked. I have noticed that although he never spoke to my chest that I often catch him looking if any cleavage is peaking, although never when we are talking. Just last night we were eating ribs and homemade mac and cheese and he kept peaking! So that is the shirt I am wearing when he takes the day off Friday.

I see his reaction to how I dress and dress accordingly when I can be a wife not just a Mom and puppy wrangler.

The sophomore boys I teach were going off today on how incredibly stupid looking Uggs are, especially when their female classmates wear them with shorts, capri pants or short skirts, as they are prone to doing.

How about we all just wear what we want and we'll find a guy who likes us for us. Nobody needs to impress anyone. Just wear what feels comfortable to you.

Seriously though... Why do women fixate on what men think of their outfits? It's so ridiculous.

as my boyfriend always says "your really just dressing up for other woman, not me" and this article just reflects that, although i love my big sunglasses and uggs haha. i still find time to dress up for my man though and he appreciates it. :)

Men are'nt one size fits all in women's clothes and shoes, There are some guys who probably like some of those styles, if they don't they'll let you know!!!

Serious question: Do men even need to ask what clothing trends women secretly hate? It seems like male fashion is a little more objective: If a guy looks good in something, he knows it and so does everyone else. It helps to ask, but you won't hear different things from a man vs. a woman. It just seems like there aren't any secrets.

If that's true, why do women need this kind of thing to clue them in on the discrepancy between what men think looks good and what a woman might think is a great idea? Why does it seem like men don't need to know any secrets but women do?

Am I way off here? Are there actually secrets that men don't know about, or is it possible that women don't actually need to be clued in on "secrets" any more than men do?

Leggings as pants are so wrong! It should not be "in." I don't care who you're dressing for.

I wore heels in the presence of my ex, and he always asked me why I wore them. But, I hate UGGS...hate them so much.

p.s. you're in that idiot group.
    • sita  •  2 years 5 months ago
Hahaha... my husband hates my tights, can't stand them at all. Well the only ones he does like are some black ones I have and ONLY because he says they look more like stockings than tight. So at least in my case so true.

the leggings i would have to disagree with. My ex-boyfriend said he would be ecstatic if i wore leggings every single day. And all his friends completely agreed with him. He said he wasnt sure what about them he liked they just made him go wild
