The department store makeover is an amazing and undervalued resource, especially in this economy. Where else can you spruce up with a chic new look for the price of a lipstick or mascara? (Okay, so you could get this advice for free, but the makeup artist is generally working on commission, people.)
As one who once spent a week getting department store makeovers for a magazine article, I have a few tips for getting the most out of yours.
1) Find a beauty advisor whose makeup you love. Brand image provides clues-are you a Bobbi Brown/Clinique/Armani sort of person, or more a MAC/Dior/Lancôme type-but look at the individual as well. If you hate lipliner, don't get a makeover from someone who clearly does.
Beauty How-to: Tips for wearing liquid eyeliner.2) Ask for something specific, say, to learn a new eye lining technique or try out a new lipgloss shade. Unless you're having a total identity crisis-or want to experience one right away-the last thing you want to do is flop in the chair and say, "O.K. Go crazy!"
So who's your favorite department store makeup artist? And what's the best advice they've given you?
