Earlier this week, Ray wrote a really good piece cataloging the spring trends still going strong for fall. (It's basically my next season shopping guide, in addition to this.) The first thing she called out was the peplum: with its waist-whittling effect, it's cinched a corset-like grip on women's credit cards.

Now the New York Times is weighing in on a similar beat (copycats)(kidding), exploring the demise of all trends, period. In it, writer Ruth La Ferla wonders if certain time-stamped pieces will stick on women's shopping lists permanently, thanks to luxe fabrics or flattering silhouettes-like the peplum. Still, peplum shapes are so in fashion right now I can't help but anitcipate a backlash eventually (if not this fall, then later). Like, if I took a shot for every peplum style I could spot in the first few racks of a Zara store right now, I'd be Prince Harry-wasted in about 14 seconds. And yet I understand Garance's point: if they make you look good, who cares if four out of six girls in the same subway car are wearing them too? Or if Topshop's website returns ninety-one pieces for the search term "peplum"? (Yes, really.)More from Lucky magazine:
