Update: Finally dyed my hair red!

A few weeks ago I wrote a very forceful, lady-empowerment post about changing my hair from easy, safe blond to something more interesting and perhaps even a little wild. I said that though I felt terrified, I knew this fear was kind of stupid and I was finally going to face it, march into the hairdresser's and declare, "Make my hair red! (please.)"

But then the appointment got canceled. And I made another one and I couldn't go. And then no appointments were working out and they were booked until last night and it was all getting REALLY FRUSTRATING. In the two week interim, I had far too much time to obsess over the whole shallow situation and to hear other people's advice and opinions (all of which stoked my panic and really made me want to chicken out). To wit:
"Well it will be next to impossible to go back to blond and you'll probably cry," said my best friend Clayton.
"I think with your hair it will probably turn out like, a pinkish salmon color, which could be good!" offered my friend Phoebe.
"Wait, like red, red? Like Lucille Ball red?" gasped my sister.
But the best came from my friend Chuck who reads this blog and told me, "Well, if you don't do it, that will be false advertising. As a reader, I would be disappointed."

    Sigh.

So, last night I did it. I told my incredibly wonderful and patient colorist exactly what I wanted and he explained that it would be complicated, but it could absolutely be done (the process involved 3.5 hours of dyeing, rinsing, toning, highlighting, drying-this was because I was blond on the bottom and brown at the roots). And now, I have to wash my hair less often and use something called "Jazzing" to keep the coppery effect. It's a little labor intensive, but ultimately, I'll save myself serious money on hair coloring. Single process dyeing costs about a third of good highlights. And that is super exciting.

Does it look good? I'll let you guys judge. I'm just really psyched that I actually went through with it.

This is what I was going for:

This is how it turned out:

I am not a natural red head. However I sport a red do. I love the red. I change it a little every time. From a debra messing red to a more auburn. I love it. It looks great on you.

Nice choice of color! As the daughter of a natural redhead, I've always wanted to have the beautiful rich auburn that my mom had. Unfortunately the brown hair dominant gene took over in my "pool" and I wasn't so blessed. But about 15 years ago, as my hair started it's slide to gray, I began to experiment with red, starting out slow with burgandys and reddish browns and going all the way to Lucille Ball bright, and light red. I have settled in the same tone as my mom's a rich auburn, but with a twist of deep red punk under hair and a stripe to one side. I love my two-tone red hair! But I have to work at it. Roots every ten days, the stripe and under hair as needed. Can't wash it to often, and no harsh hair sprays and such. Ahhh...but when you see my head on fire in the light of the sun or gleaming under a bright light, it's all sooo worth it! It is a signature for sure. Enjoy your red and don't be afraid to have a little fun with it! Nameste

I'm going to be honest, I think you look better as a blonde. Oh well, nothing's permanent right?

P.S. Why did you take the cliche "self pic" from above and to the side? You should have at least smiled.

      Elle,

My pic was a lame attempt to replicate Scarlett's pose (and also show off the hair). Never claimed to not be a dork...

It looks great! Almost exactly the same color. Your skin goes with the red really well.

Oh I get it now! Well then good for you! It does look like Scarlett's pose and facial expression. I guess I didn't make the connection because I'm so used to seeing people who purposely take pictures of themselves like that..ha ha!

      Sorry!

      aww loves it..
i've been wanting to go red too.. but more ashlee simpson red. as a hair colorist, i think shades of red are the hardest to formulate, i've been trying formulas on friends so i can get that same red but alas, i have yet to find the perfect formula so i can finally do it on myself.
      damn you redken.

It looks absolutely beautiful! I actually decided in August 2007 that I would dye my hair red after I saw a lady with a similar texture and length of my hair walking through Wal Mart, but hers was absolutely gorgeous in red. I told my boyfriend (who had to go back to school the next day) that next time he saw me I would have beautiful red hair. He didn't believe that I would do it. I was so extremely nervous being the first time I'd ever changed my hair. It came out fantastic. It does fade fast, but I get *so* many compliments on my red hair. A lot of people believe its natural because of my fair skin, freckles, and blue eyes. At school I get a million compliments a day. I also get hit on quite frequently at my favorite bar now as a redhead. Enjoy it! It looks amazing on you!! Someone else previously stated they only washed their hair every other day, and I do too now. I also use a lot of heat protection when I straighten it and invested in some better shampoo. It's so worth it.
