User post: Is Black & Brown a No-No?

I was told numerous times growing up that wearing black and brown together just doesn't work. But as my fashion tastes mature, I'm finding that I like the neutral combination. It's almost fresh.

But I'm hesitant to actually do it. Seems like it's a really good winter combo, but too dark and plain for summer.

I really like the way Nicole Richie pulled it off. I can see myself wearing this ensemble to work or perhaps for a cool, outdoor summer dinner.

This is my attempt (below) at wearing black and brown together. I got this belt from a new thrift store that opened up for $3! And the flower print seems summer-y to me. Maybe I just own too much black and therefore have little to no choices other than black and brown. But...I kind of like it.

So, am I crazy? Or do black and brown really just NOT work? Maybe black with brown is kind of an outdated rule, kind of like do not wear white after labor day...or something?
