User post: It's not too late - Resolution 2010 - fight pre-mature aging with these simple steps

Did you know that your skin can tell a lot about how well you take care of yourself? Your skin can show how well hydrated you are, whether or not you are eating healthy and getting the nutrition and vitamins needed, and how much time you spend in the sun. Additionally a dull complexion can indicate a slowing down of the cell regeneration process and sluggish circulation.

This year make your resolution to take care of your skin. Below are simple steps to ward off aging and improve your overall complexion.

1: I will use sunscreen - I can not stress the importance of sunscreen everyday. As a woman over 50 the signs of sun damage are starting to show. I have to resort to home remedies or lightening creams to lighten age spots (brown spots). Had I used a sunscreen when I was younger I am sure that my skin would have far less age spots. I have read that the new recommendation for sunscreen is 30 SPF. So apply your sunscreen daily to avoid age spots later in life. You can read more about age spots/brown spots here.

2: I will not pick at my face - it is always so tempting to pick that blemish or blackhead, however doing so can leave scarring. Deeply embedded blemishes or blackhead should be extracted with the proper extraction tool or the right skin care product. You can get a homemade blackhead remover recipe.

3: I will not go to bed with my makeup on - well I am guilty of this, and when I do I always seem to wake up with a blemish. Leaving your makeup on can clog pores and skin irritation.

4: Eating right - this mean less processed foods and more food with the right fatty acids such as the Omega-3 fatty acids. Processed and fast foods contain so much sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. These ingredients do nothing for your health or your skin. There are some dermatologists that claim fried foods, and sugary snacks can cause skin breakouts.

5: I will give up sweetened beverages and drink more water - those high calorie drinks such as soda just add pounds and do nothing for promoting great skin. Consider herbal teas and water to stay well hydrated. Read about the benefits of green tea and other herbal teas here.

6 - I will not take long, hot showers - although this is very tempting during the long cold days of winter, hot showers strip the skin of its natural oils leaving your skin dry, flaky and sometimes itchy. Consider a warm and shorter shower, not only will you be eco-friendly, your skin and your water bill will thank you for it. After your shower, pat dry and apply a moisturizer. Also consider a moisturizing shower cream or gel that will moisturize as you clean.

7: I will simplify my skin care routine and stop spending money on miscellaneous beauty products - It is so tempting to buy the newest and greatest skin care product, however it would be best served to understand what your skin care needs are. Visit a dermatologist for a consultation or do enough research and come to understand your skin type and needs.

8: I will not smoke - I know this is a hard one! I am always trying to quit smoking. Smoking does absolutely nothing for your health or your skin.

How about stop artificially tanning? Some people don't consider that the same thing as avoiding sun damage, but its more important. 20 minutes in a tanning bed is like an entire day in direct sunlight without sunscreen! I'm 23, and I see a lot of girls my age or younger with oily, greasy, and weathered orange skin. It's not attractive, its not healthy. QUIT IT!

Faith buy some Black Opal dual action fade gel $11.99 at your local beauty supply or Walgreens if available. You apply it morning and night for 14 days. By day 7 you'll be looking for your spots. It's formulated by black derms for black skin. It's genius.

you are so right, what you eat says alot about you and your skin. eating the right foods does make a big difference on your appearance. eating the right foods csn make you look younger. also i find orange juice does wonders for your skin, alot of vitamin c, its good for the skin. i believe everything except for the hot shower thing, who knew hot showers could make a big difference in your skin, i thought it was suppose to replenish your skin and make it look younger, oh well, who knew. what they forgot to mention was excercise, it also makes a big difference in your skin, it helps renew your skin, making you look younger by keeping up the circulation in your skin by making it look brighter and fresher, plus it gets the much needed oxygen in your skin, making you look refreshed all the time. also they forgot to mention its the way you sleep, if you sleep on your back you'll get less wrinkles because your face is not so smushed in when your laying on your side and on your stomach, so in a lot of ways i try to avoid that, so that i won't get wrinkles, sleeping that way just leaves a permanent mark on your face.

So where is the miracle pill to make me stop smoking?? I have tried everything including prescriptions. Nothing works. I'm in my 40s and look 50! I'm seriously considering a face lift! Not to mention I have horrible adult acne. No one should be cursed like this

All true information on the skin. There are many good beauty products out there. Of course, not smoking, no alcohol, a good diet, rest and excercise will give you a healthy glow. Common sense should tell you if you feel well, you will most likey shine through your skin. The other thing to remember is moderation and balance with everything you do in your life. Too much of anything was never good. Stress, job loss, changes that you cannot handle can all affect your skin. AS we get older we are more tempted to enjoy sweets with coffee, or when going out with the ladies. Too much sugar was also bad for your heart, teeth and complexion. We have to be strong and try different products, read the ingredients, be aware you may be allergic to something and not no it.

I know I have studied well, and have gone through it all. I still work hard to maintain my diet, health, skin, hair and life style. The wrong man in our life can hurt us too more than we may come even close to doing to ourselve. Love you, take care.

Keepyourhead up's secret is Preparation-H, the hemmoroid cream (really more like a gel.) I got the same tip from a fashion photographer years ago, however, he told me the technique was used to shrink a zit in a few hours. I've since adapted it as a moisturizer, as well. I'm heading into my mid 30's and if you look closely at my face (as you can with the pic I have posted), I think you'd guess me a decade younger. You tell me (and be honest, I can take it;) Good Luck, Ladies...and please NEVER forget; our true beauty shines out from the inside...Shine on.

Yes, fruits do work, especially those with high vitamin C content. I've been eating plenty of fruits and vegetables since the 80's. Actually, i a 59 but look like 47, as I've been told by many people, especially my 38 yr old hubby (who is a tadpole). I am very healthy, no HBP, nor diabetes nor arthritis. You are what you eat!!

no need to spend expensive anti-ageing creams or solutions. the answer to this is right before your very eyes in the kitchen and not abusing your self. have plenty of natural fruits, right way of taking water and most especially, enough rest and sleep! this way, you may age chronologically but not physically... be well and have a great skin until the end...

Try Retin-A at night, Ivory Soap for cleansing and Olay original lotion. The Retin-A is for lines and acne and eliminates the need for a million creams and potions that don't work. I have oily, breakout-prone skin, and this is the best combo I have found. I have spent thousands on new products and just found my way back to Retin-A afer I turned 36. Even though the Retin-A is a one time cost from your derm, the rest is super cheap and gentle. I have not broken out, and my skin is glowing, even, and soft. Plus I use an eye cream, esp in the winter. I don't like a lot of products, and this way I only have one treatment product, and the rest I don't have to splurge on. I would recommend this routine to anyone.

All great tips and I think the one that "works" the most is a good diet. When you eat the right foods, it shows up instantly on your complexion. Another one is exercise; everyone knows we get that great glow after working out.

My own personal tip: Keep your skin care routine as simple as possible..a good cleanser, a toner, day moisturizer with high SPF, a good night moisturizer, and if you need it, eye cream....oh and a good lip balm. Once you get older (40+), you can start to use serums and wrinkle treatment products. I'm late40's and I hardly use the treatment products, and my skin looks great. The high SPF is a MUST.

Omg, don't you use antihemorrhoidal creams. They can be used for zits, BUT just on the spot. They contain steroidian antiinflamators(I hope I spelled it right) that when absorbed in the systemic circulation cause all sorts of problems. They also contain parafine; that's why they keep skin moisturized, but why won't you buy a cream that only contains parafine and no other dangerous for your health compounds

I found something better than Botox and it's way cheaper. If it can shrink a hemmroid it certianly can removed a wrinkles and it did.
I was somewhat hesitate about using it when my friend said she have used it for years and she looks wonderful at 54,tight skin and no wrinkles.I'm not telling you to use it.But I'm 53 and no wrinkles on face or neck.

For years I slept on my side and had the pillow creases on my skin that went away went I washed my face. Then one day, they didn't. I waited for them to go away. They were there the next day, the next day and well, they're still there but much less prominent due to retinols and AHA's. They look like fine lines akin to "railroad tracks" next to my nose from my cheek fat getting squashed. I'm leaner now but the risk is still there, so I fall asleep on my back every night now.
