User post: Shine Readers: A little foundation brand help.

At the moment, I am a drugstore makeup type of gal for my foundation. I am using Maybelline New York Pure Makeup; Honey Beige seems to be the closest match in color so far. However, I hate that it leaves a cakey feeling on my face at times, and comes off easily during the day. Maybelline New York is the only drugstore brand that has makeup for skin types with some serious yellow undertones. I have always been a little cheap; I am a college student after all, but was hoping those who have branched into other brands could help me. I would like a foundation with staying power in my color, nothing overly heavy, but a light coverage. If anyone has a brand they love for foundation, any brand, but in my color spectrum (olive with some serious yellow undertones), could kindly give their recommendation? I would love a new brand with some quality.

Matte Chance by Mark. is fabulous. It absorbs any oil and matches my skin tone perfectly.

If you're looking for department store makeup, Clinique is the way to go. I used to wear it, but I can't anymore because it's too yellowy or for me, depending on the shade. The oil free kind is great for your skin and if you use their skin care line, the toner, moisturizer, foundation, and pressed powder, it'll clear up any acne and keep your skin from drying out- I swore by that stuff when I was in middle school. They've changed their shades since then and don't have much to offer people with my light skin tone, but they have plenty of shades for olive-tones.

The only thing I've found recently that works for me is Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse- I'm totally white in the face even though I spend a lot of time in the sun and my arms tan. But it probably doesn't have the yellow undertones you're looking for. Their medium shades are kind of orangey.

like stated above, you do get what you pay for. i used to use maybelline liquid deam matte foundation, or something like that. it gave me alright coverage. but i ended up going back to using mac studio tech, its give great, and i mean GREAT coverage with only a little application, especially if you use a foundation brush. mine has lasted me about 6 months so far, but i dont wear makeup every day, and even on the days when i do, i barely use any because it spreads on so smooth and it blends really well, plus they have a wide color spectrum for just about everyone. its about 29 dollars for the compacts, but to me, it is WELL worth it. you dont even need concealer [if you use it]. all you need is a clean face, some moisturizer[ which will make the foundation spread and blend better], and an applicable foundation brush, which i bought one at CVS which works just as good as the designer ones.
and if you use some pressed powder after you apply your foundation, itll help the color stay, do not sweep! dab! it will put emphasis on any lines on your face.

I wear MAC one bottle last me a year and is pretty cheap too considering that its match to your skin tone cuz I am also a college student. MAC to me dosent feel heavy but sometimes in the summer it might so I add some water to my face when applying. I have also tried Channel, loved it, but too expensive however will make your face feel so so soft. I would also recomend Clinique too, they have acne type of foundation that helps with breakouts which is extremely useful and they have some that have a dewy finish which I use in the summer. Clinique and MAC are in the same price ranges around $23. Also if you want to avoid cakey foundation I would mix water with the foundation on my hand or mix with a primer this will also make the foundation last longer.

Maybe you should try Bobbi Brown's 'Skin Foundation'. Her makeup is based on a yellow undertone. I use it and it works well for me. The coverage is buildable; so you can apply it sheerly or apply a bit more for extra coverage. It's a little pricey, but I think it's worth the $$. She also has a new formulation of foundation, 'Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation'. It gives a soft-matte finish (if that's what you prefer). I have yet to try it, but that'll be my next foundation choice.

I'm also a full time student and I know what you mean by cheap! I use Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer the tinted moisturizer. It has spf 20 in it and Retinol. I love it, it's not too heavy and goes on really easy.

Have you tried Clinique? Their moisture sheer tint is a tinted moisturizer with a gel base. It feels amazing and definitely not cakey or heavy at all. Plus it has SPF 15. :)

Milani foundation is great! I too was having a really hard time finding foundation that i liked. This one is great. Instead of using the included sponge, though, i use a brush and it works great.

For Foundation Bare Minerals. It is awesome. It's light weight, gives good coverage & has SPF. It even stays on in the hottest of heat. ( I live in Az. Hello Hot Weather) It also has helped clear up my skin. I have rosecea, & since I've been using Bare Minerals for the last 5 years noone can even tell that I have it anymore. People are very shocked when I tell them I do. Go to a place like sephora or ulta & have a makeup artist match up your color. They have a wide range of colors for everyone. Hope this helps. :)

I use Mary Kay medium coverage liquid foundation. I like the liquid better because its easier for me to blend and i don't like that cakey look either. I agree with the others though about getting what you pay for (although mine costs $14). I would suggest going to your department store and trying out different brands and see which one suits you best. The ladies at the counters can prove to be a great help sometimes!

have you tried MAC COSMETICS, that's what i wear, i have yellow undertones and the studio fix foundation works great, it last all day and i get lots of compliments on how good my makeup looks. remember you get what you pay for , if you buy cheap you get cheap results,

I buy all my makeup at the drugstore EXCEPT foundation. If you go to the department store, someone will help you match the color to your skin tone. I use clinique and it's not that expensive (about $22). And it lasts a long time.

I agree with others - with foundations to a certain extent you do get what you pay for. I've found that the drugstore foundations pretty much run too orangey, or too pink, making it difficult to to find a true yellow-neutral shade. The absolute closest IMO is the Maybelline Mineral Power liquid in the squeeze bottles, or maybe the L'Oreal True Match. True Match has good shades, but not that great coverage, plus that wide-mouthed bottle just stinks for pouring out any - too much will come out right away if one is not extremely careful. But about more expensive foundations, neither will I pay $40 and up for a bottle either. So, for me, MAC has worked out - it's halfway in price and has very good shades for those of us with yellow undertones. I use the Studio Sculpt one which is great. Really oily skins might not like this though - over on a beauty board there are a lot of younger people who got breakouts from this, so beware if oily.
to Alycia - you're very young to be worrying about lines on your face by 19. But the best way to ward off these is to wear sunblock every day if you're not already doing so, eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and not burning the candle at both ends.
      Best of luck!

I love Clinique right now. Its like 25$ but if you put it on w/ a $5 eco-tools foundation brush from Target, you can spread a little dab a looooong way. Plus, I am majorly yellow - and this is the best stuff I've found yet. Medium coverage, but looks like natural skin! Go to a Clinique counter, and let the ladies there do a test run. Double check in natural light, and you're good to go! Plus, you can get tons of free goodies :D

I have heard good things about MAC, I suppose I am not very adventurous. JP- I sure hope at 19 I do not have any lines on my facev :). But thank you for the powder tip. I have never heard of Milani, must check it out.

For the past years I have been trying to find a good foundation. My best friend got me to try BARE MINERALS. It is AMAZING. I love it. It is light feeling but it covers good and it is very natural looking. I get compliments on my skin all the time. It lasts a long time and is easy to put on. I have used clinique, mac, revlon, and maybelline. Bare Minerals is the only thing i recommend to friends it is great.

Hi Alycia, I also always use primer under my makeup. I use Smashbox primer. They have it in clear and also in tinted shades to correct redness, yellowness, etc. A little goes a long way and it makes your foundation really go far. You then only need a small amount of foundation. I also apply foundation with a brush, rather than the sponge. As for foundation, in the summer I use mineral powder foundation, and the primer makes it really go on nicely. If I need more coverage, I use the new Covergirl with the swirls of Olay moisture in it (Compact w/sponge). I can't remember the exact name, but the one Ellen Degeneris models in the magazine ads. It covers blems well, and doesn't settle into lines. Also, someone mentioned Milani makeup. . . it can be found at CVS or Walgreens drugstores. I love their pressed powder compacts, and their lipsticks/glosses. Haven't tried their foundation yet. Hope this helps.
