Vanity Fair's "New Hollywood" issue completely lacks diversity

Vanity FairVanity FairOne thing magazines love to do is call dibs on who will be the new "It" celebrities in the year to come. Sometimes they pick stars whose careers are destined to take off, occasionally they make incredible calls with near-nobodies who later become A-listers, and usually the majority of their picks fade into oblivion. While we'd like to think celeb bible Vanity Fair puts a great deal of thought and planning into its annual "New Hollywood" issue, this year the editors really limited their scope when it came to choosing the next big stars. (Or perhaps they overemphasized the "Fair"? ) Every woman on its new cover is extremely thin and very, very white. Unless Vanity Fair considers one redhead to be diversity, we feel the need to cry foul.

Vanity Fair, August 2008Vanity Fair, August 2008The cover of the March issue features Abbie Cornish, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Evan Rachel Wood, and Anna Kendrick. Many, if not all of these women have good reason to grace the Vanity Fair cover, and to be a part of what they have dubbed "the fresh faces of 2010." Evan Rachel Wood has garnered critical acclaim since her Golden Globe-nominated performance in 2003's "Thirteen" as well as loads of media attention from her highly publicized romance with rocker Marilyn Manson. Kristen Stewart was catapulted to fame by the mega-successful "Twilight" franchise and will star as Joan Jett in the upcoming film, "The Runaways," while Amanda Seyfried's career was put in motion after her role in 2008's "Mamma Mia!" But WAIT: Vanity Fair already had both Stewart and Seyfried on an August 2008 cover touting "Hollywood's New Wave." And this was also a white-girl-only cover. Were there no promising young actors of color who could have been featured in either issue?

Vanity FairVanity Fair We can think of a slew of non-white, non-rail thin actors who made a splash this year (Gabourey Sidibe from "Precious" anyone?). In the accompanying article, Vanity Fair writer Evgenia Peretz calls out the young cover stars by their best attributes: "downy-soft cheeks," "button nose," "patrician looks and celebrated pedigree," "dewy, wide-eyed loveliness," "Ivory-soap-girl features." Roles for black, Asian, and Latin actors are scarce in Hollywood, but surely Sidibe, Zoe Saldana of "Avatar" and "Star Trek," and Freida Pinto of "Slumdog Millionaire" are having their moment. Vanity Fair may have been looking for the most promising batch of talent for their issue, but they should have been looking for a diverse group of women as well.

We reached out to Vanity Fair for comment, but as of publishing time they did not respond. [Vanity Fair][Huff Post][Jezebel]

Basically they want the white model with brown skin.So as not to frighten the fragile white female readers lol who reads vanity fair ???women period! dont get me wrong i think these girls look the part that why they are there but really this publication is old and widely circulated so they have responsiblities to their readers to show many types of beauty otherwise it become boring

what if by chance they came up with 10 girls and they happen to be white....so what.....i don't get why it's bad.....do white people get up in arms when a beautiful black woman wins Miss America based on merit and talent? Do we have Miss White America beauty pagent..we do not....There is always a need for diversity yet it seems to only come up when white people are be praised...god for bid

      Ok Melissa B.

This is soooo sad. Some of the things you say are true but for the wrong reason. First of all not only is Gaborney cast and currently working on a new feature, she has had to turn down and postpone productions as she is too busy. Zoe Saldana is a FABULOUS leading lady and should be concidered one of Hollywoods "up and comings" however, sadly, no matter HOW TALENTED she is, she will never get the same opportunities as the rest of these women because -get this.. even though we have a Black President, the US is still a RACIST SOCIETY. So I guess Vanity Fair was appropriate in not concidering non-white women in their story because there isn't much hope of them becoming anything in this white dominated society. Perhaps if they looked WHITER like Halle Berry there'd be more hope?? SHAMEFUL!

Does EVERYTHING have to be diverse? For goodness sakes..we have a black president and a new black Miss America..We don't have to balance everytime and on every cover...please

Whatever! Do we have to be that P.C. all time? Who gives a sh*t if there arent any black people on the cover! I sure dont!!!!!

seriously, shut up. why the hell do people feel the need to be outraged at every little thing. It's absolutely ridiculous. Society's f'ed up.

okay so heres what i think. we see gorgeous ladies all the time...who r white. All the time on mags. Its very very slim if they use Latins, Asians, Blacks, and the list goes on and on. I mean if it was a group of black actress, that be a step or if it was a group of Asians, that be a bigger greater step. What im saying is we cant just keep putting the same thing.. nor can we limited to a certain group. stop with the just black or white or asians or Latinos magazine issue....lets put them together. there all types of lil girls out there and even teens..like me who see this and gets alil sad because those arent the only actresses coming up nor colors...and i love the way u say great because there only about 3 or 4 sooo yea, but beside that. They all are very pretty and stunning to be honest but the point is, this is 2010 lets show what the world is..and its not just one thing..i wish all mags would put all racist one there..from black to white to w.e ethnic group ....thats all im saying

good article...Amazing, the perception(s)we each have...far in between...I would have to agree with the article...Obviously FOUL...and I for One, do not see anything cute! and upcoming about being "pale, pasty and sickly-thin"...too likened to Vampires, oh! maybe the cover was Chosen like it was, because the Vamp trend is growing....who knew! I think I'll pass...besides, Life void of Color is, POINTLESS and Zombified (i.e like the "VAMPS"-oops!- "the supposedly up-and coming,New/OlD hollywood")on the Vanity Cover!

The power of a photo - I do not think that there is anything particularly wrong with the photos in the magazine, I do think that people automatically assume that as diversity grows in society so should images to display that but different magazines cater to target markets and that is nothing to chalk up to racism. In all fairness, if Vanity Fair is expected to have a group of girls with varying ethnicity in each photo so should every other magazine.

Are you trying to say EBONY, JET, BLACK WOMAN, etc.,are wrong for being black only magazines, OR are you saying Vanity Fair was wrong for doing the SAME THING as these publications? I don't remember any BIG STINK directed at those magazines over the years. QUIT WHINING... you can get a job done correctly in the time that you take to whine ... and maybe do something for yourself instead of taking leftovers from real doers who DON"T WHINE.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be politically correct!! I'm sick of it. Maybe, just maybe, there weren't any minorities that they felt were talented enough to be on the cover. It IS possible. Do we have to have affirmative action in Hollywood? It hasn't panned out to be a very good "experiment" elsewhere.

Why does everything have to be race related?
    • Seth M  •  2 years 0 months ago
Hmmm, let me see, I believe there is a magazine called "JET". Strike up the violins, I want to cry too. This person that wrote this article does not seem to have enough vision.

Good for them! How about we start screaming about racial profiling? I'm sick and tired of every little issue being racial. Sometimes it is what it is!!!
