Aside from the romance, intrigue, and all the plot's twists and turns, one of the most captivating things about the British television drama series Downton Abbey is its elaborate costuming--1920s-era glamour at its romantic best.

If you're as in love with Lady Mary Crawley's look--or the Dowager Countess' or Lady Edith's or any of the other characters'--as we are, you'll mark March 1 on your 2014 calendar right now. Because that's when the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library in Delaware will be opening its Downton Abbey costume exhibition--which compares and contrasts life in the time of Downton with American life in the same era.

"The first time I looked at the costumes up close, I was amazed at the incredible detail," said one of the exhibition's curators, Maggie Lidz. "They are surprisingly ornate. This is going to be one of the most beautiful exhibitions ever held at Winterthur."

The costumes, on loan from Cosprop, a film and television costume company, will be arranged chronologically--and will include servants' uniforms, tea gowns, and formal dress.
