Was the photoshopped Ralph Lauren model fired for being overweight?

photoshopdisasters.blogspot.comphotoshopdisasters.blogspot.comLast week Ralph Lauren came under fire for (what looked to be) an extremely altered photo of a model in one of its ads. Bloggers at the website BoingBoing.net posted the image online, and lawyers for Ralph Lauren attempted to sue them for copyright infringement. Unfortunately for Ralph Lauren, this only furthered public interest and outrage over the dangerously thin looking model and, eventually, the clothing company released this apology:

"For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responsible for the poor imaging and retouching that resulted in a very distorted image of a woman's body. We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every precaution to ensure that the caliber of our artwork represents our brand appropriately."

Unfortunately,"addressing the problem" may have included firing the model, 23-year-old Filippa Hamilton. She is 5'10" and weighs 120 pounds--clearly more full-bodied than the photoshopped girl we see in the advertisement. Though Hamilton has modeled for Ralph Lauren since she was 15, the company let her go "as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us." But the story gets worse: Hamilton says she was let go because she'd become too fat to model for them. "They fired me because they said I was overweight and I couldn't fit in their clothes anymore," she explained. "I was shocked to see that super skinny girl with my face...It's very sad, I think, that Ralph Lauren could do something like that."

Filippa Hamilton in a past Ralph Lauren adFilippa Hamilton in a past Ralph Lauren adMost of us know that a tall, young woman who weighs 120 pounds is not overweight. But Hamilton claims Ralph Lauren was dissatisfied with her body, and therefore fired her six months ago. However, the company continued to use her image, whittling down her arms, waist, thighs, and possibly several other body parts in the above ad. If they were so unhappy with how she looked, why not get another model for the campaign? Why use the photos and alter and distort them?

Today, Ralph Lauren himself is distancing himself from the ad, claiming, "The image in question was mistakenly released and used in a department store in Japan and was not the approved image which ran in the U.S." So we're confused. They say the photoshopping was an error, that Hamilton is "beautiful and healthy," yet they allegedly fired her for her size? With all these apologies and statements it sounds like the brand still has yet to accept responsibility for their actions.

Hamilton in Italian ElleHamilton in Italian ElleHamilton in French VogueHamilton in French VogueWhen I searched for more images of Filippa Hamilton, I instantly remembered her-she was the face of Ralph Lauren's fragrance, Romance, has been featured on the cover of international editions of Vogue and Elle, and has appeared in many ads. She's a gorgeous woman. "I think they [Ralph Lauren] owe American women an apology, a big apology," says Hamilton. "I'm very proud of what I look like, and I think a role model should look healthy."

We're sure models get fired and are overlooked all the time for being what the industry, perhaps unreasonably, considers overweight. Eating disorders are not only common among models, but they're also common among the women and young girls who emulate them. We're happy to see that Hamilton has come forward, and wish more models and celebrities would do the same. It's awesome and empowering when stars admit they've been photoshopped for an ad or movie poster and say how dissatisfied they are about it. With foreign countries banning underweight models from their fashion weeks, and the increasing presence of "plus size" models in women's magazines, we wish the unhealthy representation and falsified depiction of models-and women-would come to an end entirely. Do you think the day will ever come? Sources: [NYDN] [Extra] [Hulu]

If one uses the BMI to calculate her bmi (I used an online calculator), it says that anything under 18.5 is underweight, being 5 foot 10 and 120lbs puts her at a 17.2 bmi, quite under weight. If they did fire her for her weight, then technically they are expecting their models to be underweight, which is dangerous and wrong.

For the people who think plus size is overweight, please think again. Size ten is considered plus size, the average American woman is a size fourteen.

True Marina. Also, I looked up this girls BMI and she came in at underweight. This scares me, in that if she was fired for her weight, then they are expecting their models to maintain unhealthy and probably often dangerous weight.

Having just returned from Italy, I can attest to the fact that most young Italian women are small and thin. They are also short. They look like small teenagers. It's in their genes and their lineage. It it the way they are supposed to look. Us Americans come from all sorts of heritages, many from German and Irish genes. We cannot expect to look that way. We need to accept out bodies and try to keep them in good shape, but never even dare to try to look like PhotoShoped models.

wow she is NOT overweight... RL is insane. People like that are part of the reason that young girls so often have eating disorders and things like that. its just sad that they would do something like that

That photoshopped photograph makes her look really deformed. They have an extremely bad artist if that's all he/she can come up with. Nasty.

Hey isoagent, what if your boobs weigh in at ten pounds? Do you factor that into the 5+ per each inch. So, since I am 5"10.5" should I weigh 155 plus 10? Very interesting calculations because I have HUGE Breasts!

I certainly hope this young woman has a spectacular career ahead of her, no matter what area of the biz she pursues. Meanwhile, myself a showbiz woman who earns more than enough to afford Ralph Lauren, I won't be making anymore purchases with his label sewn inside. He is just an old fart anyway.

And, on the subject of farty old guys, I'd love it if Craig Ferguson were to invite young Filippa to be a guest on his show and spill some beans on Old Ralphie.

That is just totally THE STUPIDEST thing I've ever heard in my life. Contract or not, that is endangering a life, making somebody
practically starve like that. People (who are human) know that she is way underweight. They deserve to be sued, (not for the reason they
mentioned which was for infringement,) but for being stupid and endangering a life. I'm sorry but models deserve so much more respect than that. These models are being braiinwashed to believe that 100 lbs is overweight. It is just plain stupid.
      • Jessie 6 days ago
That is probably a large part of the reason many models are annorexic or bulimic.

This is bullcrap, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a little meat on the bones!!!!!! These super skinny girls aren't the hottest.

I don't think anyone looking at that picture would think it is an honest representation of a real woman. She looks very much like one of those "Bratz" dolls. With that said, it is sad that RL and company felt it necessary to photoshop the pic at all when it's obvious the lady in question is beautiful just the way she is (and she could probably stand to eat a cheeseburger or two and still be just as gorgeous). The perception of beauty in todays society needs to change...not just RL.

What is overweight? Does that mean "superskinny" is perfect? If Ralph lauren dont like the way she look then why hire her for photo shoot?? The extremely altered photo looks so ugly, i wouldnt want my kids to like this.
      • Jessie 6 days ago
I agree. The problem is, if that weight is considered overweight, then technically means that only annorexic weight girls are considered pretty and worthy of being in their advertisements. And that is bad because, in a sense they are saying being annorexic is ok. If they are SERIOUSLY against annorexia (and I mean for real no jokes), then they are 1000% hypocrites, because being 5 food 10 and 120 lbs is underweight.

First of all the picture is just plain stupid. Second, all of the people that are complaining about it need to look in a mirror and ask themselves what role they have played in letting it get to this point before they complain about it. For decades women have bought into the idea that the fashion world is God when it comes to how a woman should look, if you dont believe this then how has all the top fashion companies made so much money ( because you bought all thier clothes and magazines). Further more how much money has been spent on plastic surgery and diets trying to obtain that look. Then you want to bitch you get dumped when you hit 40. If you have to look a certain way for a man to marry you , He married the look not the person so why is it so shocking when you start to lose that image he dumps you. I'm not defending men that does this ( they are screwed up jerks to begin with, but you married the jerk). Another fact the majority of men who cheat on their wives do so with a woman that by fashion standards is fat but they need to have the trophy wife to impress their friends. Also look at all the master painters and thier masterpieces the women that they painted were definitly not fat but they would be fat by fashion standards. Finally any man that is complete honest will tell you that it is far better to make love to a woman that has some (meat) on her then a stick and bones woman. Who wants to feel bones jabbing into you. So before you go bitching about RL realize it was your insecure selfs that allowed RL to get as popular and powerful has he has because you have supported him for years. so i guess what im trying to say is that as a society we have allowed this to happen by letting people who are in business to make money ( designers, fashion agencies, cosmetics, pharmacutical, plastic surgeons and so on) tell us what is the best image for us. This has lead to untold numbers of women and girls having serious medical conditions, and being very unhappy if not depressed about not having the perfect body as descriped by people that only want to make money. Every person is different and therefore will look different from anyone else, if you want to get married and stayed married make sure you marry someone with a soul and that loves you for you not the image you project. Men are basicly easy to please ( if you date or marry one that isnt a stuck up asshole that only cares abouts looks and money, there is more to life then that. men require two things food and sex. And if a man is honest he loves meat and potatoes not string beans that also applies to woman to a little meat on a woman is a good thing. Having said all that im not saying that it is healthy for a woman to weigh 400 lbs, obviously being morbidly obese is unhealthy some people i think are predisposed to being heavy but think about this, how many women are obese because they got depressed when they were teenagers because they weighed 20 lbs heavier then what the media, fashion industry told them the ideal woman should be and they couldnt achieve that weight so they started over eating for comfort. Case in point how many women have went on eating binges because of depresion for varing reasons ie someone told them they were overweight, they got dumped, etc. If parents are willing to pay for plastic surgery for teenagers so that they can achieve that look it is not going to get any better. I think it is funny that it seems like onlt the media and the fashion industry is the only place that gets away with this, because if you look at other forms of entertainment like movies, music, and men's magizines, movies, they dont force their models to be stick skinny, alot of top acctress's are not stick skinny, and Oprah has never been skinny, alot of the top women singers are anything but skinny , Pink, Beyounce, and alot of others look healthy. Look at the models for the adult industries I cant remember any top models ever being stick skinny( yes i know alot of them have undergone plastic surgeries) which I think is wrong also, but they are still healhty looking not skin and bones like fashion models. Allright I guess im done ranting but until we as shoppers stop support the fashion industry there isnt going to be any changes.

Ugh! Why are you people so shocked with this whole RL image...it's been around, the photochopped surrealistic images that are constantly drilled in our heads, children's heads...especially women. You now have 9 years olds who weight a mere 60 pounds saying that they are fat due to images they see in these magazines. Let's not look at this issue as just the cover but the overall advertising that providing false hopes and images to our fellow men and women. Ok, I sound like some mother from one of the Bible Belt States, I'm not. LOL. But seriously folks, question the mindset of Ralph Lauren and it's marketing people, and along with all those other design/style magazines...how they shove this shit down your throats and you all happily accept it. WTF? Les forget the images shown and just concentrate on the clothes.

I know Ralph and you know what boys and girls he is way sicker than this. The fashion bus. is sick----get use to it. And, if you really cared you'd buy other shit than Polo and RL----they only exist becuase you pay the money dummies. And, you think Ralph is sick try another friend of mine---Calvin. He too is 5'10 AND 120.

Additionally, being 5'6" and a buck ten at AGE 45 and a former teeange model I find this REALLY sickening. I didn't have this kind of pressure. I'm finding a new designer. Heck, even "Land's End" is looking better and better...
