What Not to Buy at Forever21

The old saying "you get what you pay for" rings especially true at one of our favorite places for affordable fast fashion-Forever21. While the retail giant certainly has some of the most unbeatable deals around ($5 tops, $7 dresses, etc.), shoppers must be discerning to avoid buyer's remorse. Here's what we recommend you pass up at Forever21, and also what we suggest is worth snatching up!

    Things to Skip

    1. Jeans

Typically, $20 jeans don't last too long. Denim at this price is usually thin to begin with, ill-fitting, and just plain not made for long-term wear.

    2. Earrings

Yes, Forever21 earrings are a steal at about $4 per pair, but they're also generally low quality, and even potentially harmful. Since they're coated with a "high polish finish" instead of being rhodium-plated or made from 18k gold-plated brass, they can cause infection among those with sensitive skin.

    3. Dresses

If you're not planning on layering a Forever21 dress with opaque tights, leggings, or even jeans, you might be less than pleasantly surprised to discover the micro-hem on most of the dresses Forever21 offers. This floral dress boasts a 25-inch length from shoulder to hem, which, if you're about 5-foot-8-inches tall, will barely cover your lady parts.

    4. Shoes

While $23 peep-toe heels are hard to turn down, we'll bet after one block in your bargain platforms, you'll be wishing you'd kept your cash.

Killer Heels You Can Actually Dance In

    Things to Snatch

    1. On-Trend Tops

Forever21 is the perfect place to shop the latest trends. Chances are you won't be too upset when your $12 sheer lace or tribal crop top goes out of style.

    2. Sunglasses
$6 sunglasses? Heck yes! We'll take three pairs: one for the car, one for our beach bag, and one over-the-top style to wear at night when we're feeling extra cool. And when they get scratched, cracked, or pass on to the resting place for all lost and forgotten shades, we won't even shed a single tear.

The Most Flattering Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

    3. Bags
Another accessory that's okay to purchase at Forever21 is a special-occasion bag. While the $25 shoulder styles won't cut it as your everyday bag, there's little risk in snatching up a $2 beach tote or $15 evening clutch. One of our editors has a studded Forever21 tote that made it to London and back and still makes a great carry-on travel bag!

    4. Swimwear

Since bathing suits typically fade from sun exposure and get ripped up from sitting on concrete anyways, a $20 style that lasts an entire summer sounds like a great deal to us!

The first list is what not to buy. The second list, is what to buy.

Forever 21 when they first opened where I live had fabulous necklaces and braclets now they downsized that dept and all the jewelry looks cheap. There clothes are all plaids and loud colors now ugh. I went on vacation and went to there stores in NYC they have completely different clothes and jewelry there great things and gorgeous. Wish they would bring these kind of clothes to the store I shop in!

Okay, so according to most comments either everyone else is just short or my family (yeah I know- genetics, whatever), most of my friends and basically my whole school is super tall. The average height at my school for girls (since my school is all girls) would be 5'7"-5'10" with the occasional 6' (Her parents wher basketball and lacrosse players in college. She plays softball- we're on the team togeather). We have some girls who are super short (the adorbale little year seven kid. She's like 4'6", she's so tiny. My bestie is 5'4")So basically, 5'8" is tall? I'm pretty sure that's the average height for females.

I have three pair of F21 jeans. They are like 3 years old and I STILL rock them! :)

I don't even know how many pair of earrings I have. But really if I pay $2 I'm not mad that they last a year! :)

I LOVE ME SOME F21 dresses...had one on yesterday!!!!!!!!!

I don't own any shoes but that's because I love my feet. I treat them well! LOL!!

      I have TONS of tops

and two pair of shades that I rock RELIGIOUSLY!!!!!

      No bags or swimwear though!!

Overall it's one of my FAV stores!! :)

it's fast fashion, of course things aren't going to be the best quality but i've only had one thing wear out or break from there. The dresses are GREAT if you are short...I'm 5'3 and it's one of the only places i can find dresses/skirts short enough, so it's not all bad! Short people need places to shop too! Also, in my experience, the bags are made much worse than the jewelry. Besides, if my earrings break it's not that big of a deal but if my handbag breaks then I risk losing wallet, phone, etc.

So when you are shopping at a store that sells jeans, dresses, jewelry, tops and accessories, you should skip on buying jeans, dresses, jewelry, tops and accessories. Sounds to me like perhaps we should pass on the store in general if everything they sell is so low quality.
      • Jori Lynn 1 month 16 days ago
You misread the article completely. It said to skip the Jeans, Shoes, earrings and if you're tall the dresses. the second list is saying to buy tops and accessories from this store.

Actually, everything I've bought from Forever 21 has lasted just fine. There's a pair of sandals that I had before my feet outgrew them, that I got when I was in middle school. They're still in great shape, and they're about 8 years old. My mom still has them, because they're her size. And I have tops, dresses, and a coat that have lasted me multiple years. I have trouble wearing their jewelry for any long period of time. But I'm allergic to nickel, so I have this problem with most jewelry. And as for the dresses and their length, I'm 5'0''. Length is not an issue, lol.

Omg the bathing suits are horrible! Zero support! If you have a flat chest it's fine. And they have a ton of dresses that have a longer hem. Heels hurt no matter where you get them. And as for the earrings just coat the post in clear nailpolish.

Buying clothing at stores like this is tantamount to an apparel one-night-stand...you feel good for about a minute and then come to regret your choice. I have very little extra cash on hand and it's tempting to spend $100 on five things and not one, but what I've learned over the years is that wardrobes should be built over time and clothing should be cherished for years. This can only happen when you buy quality merchandise. And if it goes out of style that quickly, it was never stylish to begin with.
There's also this to consider...textile production is horrible for the planet. I'm stumped that the audience for fast fashion is the 18-24 year old crowd and they are the ones who profess to be so concerned about the environment. Stores like Forever 21 absolutely exploit the environment with low quality apparel. Their stuff becomes too beat up to donate and ends up in a landfill. Forever 21 also has a history of exploiting their workers, but claim to have changed their ways. Their cheap prices make me doubt it.
If you're too broke for higher-end new stuff, buy vintage or go to resale shops that sell designer and brand-name labels until the fashion industry gets a much-needed make-over.

So basically, we shouldn't buy anything from Forever 21?
    • Kaitlin  •  1 year 1 month ago
Whoever wrote this is a tard. Youre probably fat and ugly and thats why you think nothing will fit right. I buy evrything from Forever 21 and have never seen any problem with it. So there.

We have had much better luck for jeans at Delia's (for my 15 yr old daughter - who is also 5'8").
The jeans we bought at Charlotte Russe were unbelievable- all four pairs - 2 purchased for school starting and two at xmas are completely shot! ~junk~ so disappointed! - this makes me NEVER go back..............
I agree with the tops and accessories @ Forever 21 being the best buys!!
    • Jenny  •  1 year 1 month ago
I completely disagree with this article. I am 5'5 and have never had a problem with their dresses. Ive also had 2 pairs of their skinny jeans for a couple years now and they have been amazing! My earrnings have never tarnished and my platform heels are sassy and comfortable. So.... I'm questioning if the writer has ever worn anything from their store.
    • gc_love  •  1 year 1 month ago
The dresses WILL give you ample coverage... everyone's height is different... we're not all long and lanky... lol, luckily

      I LOVE EVERYTHING AT F21!
    • H.M.  •  1 year 1 month ago
If the dress thing is really true, then it is no wonder that Paris Hilton loves to shop there
    • Heather Michelle  •  1 year 1 month ago
i disagree with most of this article....almost all of my wardrobe (including accessories!) is from Forever 21 and 9 times out of 10 the clothing lasts long. Some of these items just depend on the person. Obviously someone whos 5'8" is going to need a longer dress than someone else...its not like every dress they have is only one size. the store always has a wide variety(size, shape, pattern, color, etc) of any type of clothing, different things work better for some than others.
    • didid  •  1 year 1 month ago
I can sit here and honestly say that the person who wrote this article, clearly does not know what they are saying. As a life long shopper of forever 21, I can disagree to all these comments. I have 2 pair of earrings I bought back in 2006 and are still brand new! They never irritate my ears and look shiny. I have a bathing suit I bought Last year, I am still wearing it this year and it looks amazing and it is the same print to this year. As for the peep toe shoes, amazing price I actually got each one for 13.99, those beautiful peep toe heals. They are amazing and I can walk in them all day. The dresses are soft and comfy. If you wear to shop at Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein, there would be special recommendations as to how to wash your clothing and maintain. Just because the product is cheaply priced, it does not make the material bad. Should the customer chose to just wash it like a regular cotton t-shirt that is a different story. People who do not know how to care for things should not be judgmental and bias towards something that goes both ways. As for the Editor and Writer make sure you have the correct facts before you write a false article. - Didi

There are some people who if they buy cheap earrings it'll irritate ears. I think that is the point of the earrings being listed. It does not say to skip the swim suits at Forever21, it is saying to BUY the swimsuits at Forever21 as they last.
    • supernova  •  1 year 1 month ago
This article is pretty pointless. All of the items listed are 90% of what is sold at Forever 21 sooo they are essentially saying "don't shop at Forever 21" in fact they are actually being more insulting by spelling it out item by item rather than just saying that.
