What’s the deal with male models? “Zoolander 2” in the works

Awesome news: Ben Stiller is on board to revive his role of Derek Zoolander in a "Zoolander" sequel. Justin Theroux (the writer of "Tropic Thunder" and "Iron Man 2") will direct, but there's no word yet if Owen Wilson will return as Hansel (he's so hot right now). Theroux is heading to Paris Fashion Week to "immerse himself on what is current in fashion." We can't wait!

Why do we have such an obsession with "Zoolander"? Well for starters, it's the first time we felt like we sort of understood male models. Though the film is a hilarious satire, so many moments were totally dead on. The way models are sometimes treated like monkeys and have to keep their mouths shut and do as they're told? True! How modeling agencies have their talent living together in shared apartments with bunk beds? True! The way models take their signature poses very seriously? True! That designers can create outfits made out of garbage or designed to look like something a homeless person would wear and send it down a runway and call it fashion? So true!

While it's easier to understand why females get into the modeling industry, we sometimes wonder about the guys. "Well I guess it all started the first time I went through the second grade," said Derek Zoolander of his fashion calling. "I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking 'wow, you're ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career.'" We're sure some naturally gorgeous dudes have dove head first into modeling careers, but often guys are scouted just going about their business--hanging around a mall or walking down the street. The perks of being a male model aren't too bad either! Lots of traveling, free clothes, being told how hot you are, potentially very good money, and close proximity to loads of hot women. Yes, just as portrayed in "Zoolander," most male models are actually straight. Though admittedly the industry may have them caring more about fashion and hair products than your average heterosexual dude. And as for posing in nothing but undies? Derek and Hansel taught us that models are very comfortable in their own skin. And why shouldn't they be with "chiseled abs and stunning features"?

While we may never fully understand male models, we're sure they're not all as clueless as Hansel, when he said, "Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot." Zoolander once said, "I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is." And we think he's on the right track, because as we all know, there is more to life, and beauty can fade. It will be interesting to see how this plays into the sequel. [Deadline]
