    Who is Victoria's Secret Kidding?

Victoria's Secret 2008 fashion show featured various models representing "the perfect woman." You know: 5'10", 110 pounds, size 2, B-cup, long and leggy - just your everyday American woman…

The real secret behind Victoria 's Secret is that the company's line of clothing and lingerie is designed for idealistic models, not us average women. How many women do you know who fit the description above? The truth is, the average American woman is 5'4" and weighs 163 pounds. In fact, nearly 50% of American women wear a size 16 or higher.

With an estimated 0.5-3.7% of females suffering from anorexia and an estimated 1.1-4.2% suffering from bulimia, it kind of makes you think about what these young girls and women are seeing and comparing themselves to. They see unrealistic bodies like those featured in the Victoria 's Secret fashion show and find themselves unhappy with their own appearances.

And it doesn't help that even Lane Bryant - one of America 's leading plus size clothing retailers - uses models that are sizes 8-10 when "plus size" is technically any female who is size 16 or higher.

So how can Victoria 's Secret justify showing its angels in clothing and lingerie that is supposed to look good on American women when most American women would not fit into it? What we need is a reality check - someone to portray a realistic depiction of the American woman.

Frustrated with impractical marketing from companies like Victoria 's Secret, Robin Bryan Culver and her daughter KC founded AboutCurves.com, an Internet lingerie website dedicated to real women.

About Curves caters specifically to plus size women and features only plus size models who are not professional models, but real women with everyday jobs and families. The company prides itself on letting women see what its products will look like on average women with curves.

Constantly being slammed with images from Victoria 's Secret of women that are not the norm just makes it harder for average women to see that sexy is not about the length of their legs or being able to see their ribs as they walk.

Sure most women enjoy seeing the Victoria 's Secret models, secretly hating them and wishing they could look like them, but at the end of the day every woman needs to appreciate her own beauty and the fact that she can look amazing too. And companies like About Curves, that show an accurate representation of most American women, can help us all to see that, which is truly refreshing.

Really? a size 9 is considered a plus size? I struggled my whole life to get down to a single digit pant size. The current pick I have is of me in a size 9. 148 pounds and 5'8". Now this is healthy! More models should be between sizes 8-10. This is a healthy medium. Just my opinion

well if you say the average american women is a size 16 or higher, that to me says that americans in general, are unhealthy..eating too much mcdonalds and being too lazy to exercise...people do and eat what they want, but it's ashamed that no one has will power and self motivation anymore and that being overweight is accepted! Well "to each is own" i guess, but it deffinitely puts things in perspective of the way the american life style is. I myself am sick of it!!! I've made a consious effort to know what I am putting in my body and how I take care of myself. Learning which foods are better for you and eating healthier has really become an awaking not only to my waist size, my engery level, and sense of well being, but also to my taste buds. I now know when I'm eating something unhealthy just by the taste of it. I doesn't mean i don't indulge every once in a while, but it's all about moderation! I myself am not a "skinny" person..for being 5'2 and weighing 140 averaging size7/8..which is over the average scale for my height, but I am very concious of my body. Everyone wants what's fast and easy, not what's healthy and real...with soo many hormone produced and processed foods, it's no wonder that americans are overweight...although it may take a lil while longer to prepare a wholesome homecooked meals...I would take it over Mcdonalds anyday. AND I KNOW MY BODY WILL THANK ME FOR IT....

This is a bad article. If VS showed 160 lb. women running around in lingerie they'd go out of business. They aren't just selling lingerie to women, they are selling sex appeal to men and women. Not all of their models are anorexic looking, some of them are simply in shape and fit - something that the vast majority of American women lack. When 1/3 of our country is obese that creates a problem - it goes beyond being "too thin." There is also a problem with being "too fat" - it's a health crisis.

over time i think people have really progressed from the bony days of the nineties. and i'm even more glad to see a lot of chubby teenagers in two pieces at pools because i think it shows a lot of progress. Glamour just did a spread of plus sized models and hopefully that it and other efforts like that will make an actual difference and open up people's minds in the long run. but on the other hand glamour wouldn't of done it if it wasn't a hot topice that would garner attention and sell more copies.

here's one thing that has always bugged me though and i hope it doesn't annoy people. the use of the word 'curves.' that is a positve word for a big girl. personally i am not a big girl but i am not skinny. i am about ten or 15 pounds into the middle of my weight range and i liked to think that i have curves. but the word curvy has been butchered into meaning overweight. and i don't like it. why can't people say rubenesque or ruby or something else besides curvy. if you get too overweight just like being too thin you lose your curves. that's a personal issue, but i'm sharing it.

I like your blogs, another problem with Victoria's Secret: Men! SOME men really do expect women to look like a VS model. Sorry, but no matter how thin I am, I will never look like Heidi Klum, blame genetics :(

my opinion is that lots of women now in 2008 are over weight.
The perfect body is what your comfortable with.
      the VS models are healthy.
the average weight of women in u.s is from 5'1-6 and 110-150

Well, according to Sir Mix-a-Lot, the perfect woman is 5'2" and measures 36-24-36. :)

Hey now don't be blaming us straight men for your eating disorders! The fashion industry is run by homosexuals, and their body ideal is that of a skinny boy or young man with a swimmers body, so its no surprise they want women who are size 1 to be wearing their fashions.
The male ideal can be found in Playboy magazine, where the women are definitely not Size 1! They're usually too short and too heavy to be in high fasion, but its never bothered subscribers that they are "too fat" for runway modeling.
Men like a lot of things, some like them heavy, some like them cury, some like them fit, and yes some like them skinny, but it depends on the guy. The only consistent ideal is the hip/waist ratio, where the waist is smaller than the hip, regardless of weight. That has to do more with evolution and psychology than anything else. Even women respond to a proper hip/waist ratio on men.
That's why nobody with a beer belly, female or male is considered sexy unless the observer has a fetish for it.

I cannot believe this crap. American women today are FAT. i agree that a victorias secret model is unrealistic for an average american women but why not change the "normal average american women?". I for one am aiming to look good, tone and feel good about myself, i'm 5'5 @ 133 lbs and I'd like to get into the 120s and look tone while doing it. Forget you american women who want to sit and bitch about the high standards that are being set, instead of bitching...why not use that energy and hit the gym? That's the problem with america, everyone has the right to bitch and complain..and not do a damn thing about it. I'm not bitching, i'm hitting the gym everyday, you fat SENSITIVE American women should try diet and exercise, it would improve your entire life.

And im not trying to "hate" on American women at all, but it's getting to a point where it's crazy. The women in this country are getting fatter and fatter and they think a man should love them for "who they are" wake up idiots, American men dont want fat slobs, and i dont blame them.

I have a problem when she says "us average women". so since i'm 5'9 and a size 2, i'm not supposed to be reading the article? if 50% of the population is a size 16 or higher, then I'm very worried and didn't know exactly how bad the obesity problem is... and how are the vs models "unrealistic"?.. yes, they are the elite because they actually take care of their bodies. they're obviously not "unrealistic" or else they wouldn't be that size. and sizes 8-10 are plus sizes. yes, victoria's secret sells close to american women who will most probably look sexy in the lingerie. It's not their fault if some people don't fit into it. maybe they're promoting a healthy america? and when she says an internet website dedicated to "real women".. what does that make me? a fake woman? a man? and who exactly is slamming her with images of Victoria's Secret...?" sounds like she's just trying to advertise a company. and she says that every woman needs to appreciate her own body. well that includes her. if she really appreciated her body, then she wouldn't have taken the time to bash people who she has never met.... right.
