Why I'll Never Spend $100 on a Pair of Jeans Again

My best friend and I have very different techniques when we go shopping for jeans. She'll fall in love with the most expensive pair and buy 'em without even trying the jeans on. Me? I'll spend hours flipping through the sale rack until I find the perfect ones (a.k.a.: they make me look like I have a butt and they cost less than what I'd spend at happy hour).

I'm sure my best friend has her reasons for splurging on her jeans -- and I'll admit, these colored jeans are tempting -- but I just can't justify blowing my savings on a single pair of overpriced (albeit nice) distressed pants. It's a tad ridiculous to spend more than $100 on jeans that are all torn up. I can rip holes in my own jeans, thankyouverymuch.

I love my bestie and all, but I think she's being a little outrageous with her spending. And I know I'm not really making the most of my time by digging through the sale bin all day either. So I did us both a favor and found these great, shockingly cheap jeans. I know, my bargain hunting skills are impeccable -- if only that would rub off on my BFF.

    Skinny jeans

Left: Forever 21 Dark Skinny Ankle Jean, $10.50
Here's proof you don't have to pay designer prices for great quality. One shopper says this pair of skinnies "looks well made and the fabric feels great," and at just over $10, she says "can't beat the price!" Another woman who finds that a lot of jeans "fit right at the waist," for her but are "too big" everywhere else loves this pair. "Given the price, I assumed they would look cheap and be ill-fitting. But they're perfect!" she says.

    Right: Billabong Brooklyn Skinny, $49.50
Surf brand clothing is another amazing option for great jeans at low prices. One shopper gushes over this affordable pair, calling them "soft, stretchy, comfy, and cute." With its super-stretch denim blend material, she suggests you "go a size down," which will make you feel ever better about your purchase.

"These jeans are a standout," says one reviewer. "They have a '70s feel," and are "a welcomed alternative to the skinny jean." Another woman warns that "they run a tiny bit big," but still says they were exactly what she was looking for. Also, these flares come in a few different shades (score!), and one shopper says she loved these jeans so much she plans on "ordering them in some of the other colors as well."

Right: The Gap 1969 Modern Trouser Jean, $69.95

And if you're on the petite side, you definitely want to snatch these up; One petite shopper says she "filled her drawer" with these because they fit so well.

They look amazing with any shoe, including flats, heels, and boots.

Right: American Eagle Skinny Jean, $34.50
This pair of colored skinny jeans comes in a few different shades, One shopper has them in yellow, but loves them so much that she plans on buying all three colors online. Another woman says, "The colors are amazing. It looks a bit less bright in person, but it's a nice change from the neon colored jeggings." She warns, "They're not actually jeggings so they don't stretch as much, but they're so comfy, cute, and versatile." Sounds like a good trade-off to me.

Another woman says, "the fit is fantastic" and the fabric is "relatively light, but they do not stretch out." One reviewer told us when she put on these jeans, her boyfriend's jaw dropped and he said, "They make you look so HOT!" Talk about instant gratification.

Plus, there's no need to break them in, according to one shopper who says, "These jeans are like your favorites you've been wearing for years."

Right: Tripp NYC -- The Fishnet Underlay Jean in Black, $65

      • juletta 3 months ago

I once bought jeans from Forever21, and quickly regretted it. They look cheap, they feel cheap, and don't count on having them for long. I would rather pay more and get something that will last me for a long time than to continually buy pieces of crap clothing that have to be thrown in the bin after a few months.

i bought jeans for $76 once and never again!!! they were from buckle and they fell apart the button fell off.....im not overweight so i know i didnt pop the button

I don't think I've ever bought jeans from Buckle, the store front doesn't seem like my sort of thing, lol. I like jeans from The Limited -- their 312 line; they often have buy one, get the second half off thing at some point during the year, so two pairs for about $90-$100, but how many pairs of jeans does one need? I have two bootcut, one capri, and one skinny in my closet and that works out great for me! If I needed 10 pairs, price might be a bigger problem. Quality over quantity, though. Levi's are great too! And Gap Jeans!

Do yourself a favor and try the Forever 21 jeans. I was PLEASANTLY surprised at the fit, look, and comfort of the skinny jean. I may need to run and get plenty more before customer demand raises the price or cheapens the quality.

Thank you for writing this- I was wondering if those jeans would be good, given the price. I haven't had the best experience with really inexpensive jeans, so I was skeptical. But I may give them a try.

Same here... I always wondered if Forever 21 jeans would fall apart after 2 washes. I will give them a try.
    • Deanna  •  2 months ago
Forever 21 makes their clothes cheap so they will quickly fall apart and you will have to go back and buy more. Don't get them!!!!

I have yet to pay more than $30 for a pair of jeans. Plus, unlike the author, I'm still looking for a pair that make me look like I DON'T have a butt.

JC Penney - 3 different kinds all for $3.50 (legging, flair bottom, and straight dark blue). Yes, Three dollars and Fifty Cents each. Go during restocking times and look at the clearance rack. I have not paid over $5 for my jeans in the last 10 years. I also got 2 cute tops for $2 and $4.50.

Levi's Outlet if you can find one near you. $20.00 for jeans that'll last for the next 10 years. Or, surprisingly, Old Navy during their Fall sales. $20.00 will get you a pair that'll hold up for a good 5-8 years. I've got 4 pairs of jeans that I rotate and haven't had to buy antying for the last 5 years.

I'm a very plus-size woman, so most of these brands are not for me. I will forever extoll the virtues of Right Fit jeans from Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherine's. $50 a pair, they're fabulously long-lasting and finding a good fit is really easy.

I want for a clearance sale in racks at Macy's, Dillards, and other stores (including Marshall's, TJ Max, etc). There are more outfits (even jeans) you can find less than $20.

1st article i read is about what to do when your nanny quits now how $88 jeans are cheap.....wow WTH are these people on
      • Amanda 3 months ago
In all fairness, $88 is pretty cheap as compared to higher-end brands, which unfortuantely, are worth every penny. I used to buy Seven For All Mankind when I was living at home, and those were absolutely magnificent. But these are leaner times, so those days are over. I'm not sold on $10.50 for jeans, because I think you get what you pay for with those. But I can vouch for American Eagle. For $30 (higher for specialty styles,) you get a great fit, and they stand the test of time.

I get so tired of all the "I can't believe people would spend so much money on clothes, how stupid of them when you can get it for so much cheaper." If someone is spending $100 on a pair of jeans, they're not stupid, shallow, or indifferent about how they spend their money (most of the time). They have reasons. It does make a difference actually if you spend over $100 on jeans as opposed to $20.
First of all, they will last much, much longer. They are made with better material, and therefore, won't strech out like the cheaper jeans will over time. Also, you know how if you wear a pair of jeans multiple times before washing them, on the 3rd day they loosen up and don't fit as well? That won't happen either. Also, the color won't fade after a couple of washes.
Secondly, they're usually more comfortable, too. The Forever 21 jeans are a great price, but they barely have any strech, which makes them super uncomfortable.
Third, the expensive jeans fit better. They're usually designed better and therefore, highlight your best assets and camoflauge your flaws really well. I get that for girls with a great figure most jeans will look good, but for those of us who aren't a size 2, spending more $ on jeans that fit so well is worth it.
And lastly, expensive jeans also look better. I know that in pics the cheaper ones look good, but in real its easy to differentiate between the good quality ones and not-so-good quality.

I'd rather spend $120 on a pair of jeans that look great, feel great and will last forever then having to get a new pair every 6 months because the cheaper ones I got just look and feel old. In the long run, its actually more cost-effective when you have clothes that are made to last.

Well said! Sometimes I wonder if these comapnies make special high quality clothing for their ad shots, because in real life, it always looks like what it is: cheap, mass-produced, mass-consumed garbage. OK for maybe half a season, tops. I'll pay the extra every time to get something of better quality.
      • Vicki 3 months ago
If I know I'm going to wear a particular article of clothing alot, I'm willing to spend a little more on it. That way I'm not constantly replacing it. I started doing this with clothing staples such as jeans, shorts, and particular styles of shoes. I do spend less on trendy tops and dresses since I never know how often I'll be wearing a particular one before it goes out of style. It's all about cost-per-wear.
