Why not to wear skinny jeans: nerve damage

ShopbopShopbopMany of us like the way skinny jeans look, but there's no debate about their comfort level. Looser fitting denim styles, trousers, or leggings are preferable, and if you were looking for an excuse to stash your tight jeans, here's a health reason: Doctors say increasing numbers of women are coming to them with meralgia paresthetica.

Do you ever feel a numb, pins-and-needles tingling feeling along your thigh? Do you get a weird burning or itching sensation down your upper leg? This condition is caused by constant pressure cutting off the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve.

According to this MSNBC story, one skinny jean wearer, Parmeeta Ghoman, went to her doctor because it felt like she was "floating" and she couldn't feel her legs. "It felt really strange - it felt like my leg had gone to sleep," says Ghoman. Another woman from this CBS report said her jean pain was so bad that her doctor now has her taking anti-seizure medicine to control her symptoms.

While sufferers of this condition are typically construction workers, police officers who wear heavy belts, pregnant women, or obese people, experts say increasing levels of young, healthy women have experienced the symptoms because of their skinny jeans.

Luckily, the damage is usually not permanent. Chiropractic physician Dr. William Madosky told MSNBC, "The key is, you remove the pressure, and the nerve regenerates." Also, he adds that you should avoid wearing these jeans with high heels, since it can make the situation worse by forcing you to tilt your pelvis forward and adding more pressure on the nerve.

And of course, if you're experiencing this kind of pain, you should consult your own doctor right away and stop wearing those tight trousers!

Have you ever experienced any of these tingly thigh feelings from wearing your tight jeans? Would you stop wearing them if they caused discomfort, or do you stick to wearing what looks good (skinny jeans, stilettos, etc) no matter what the pain? [MSNBC] [CBS5.com]

well, i feel skinny jeans are fine as long as you like them and feel comfortable in them. i like skinny jeans just becuse they look nice on me, not becuse i want to be "in style" wearing the jeans for style appeal is stupid, you should just wear what makes you feel goos and what looks nice on you! i dont think just becuse people wear skinny jeans there wierd, or messed up. i think they just like the way they look on themselves.

uhmm its not for people who are too skinny,
i wear them and i look good...
and maybe its just because of the sizes, which isn't the jeans fault.
and you dont need to have an "eating disorder" to fit into that style of pants.
anybody can wear them, as long as they feel comfortable with themselves.
and its really rude to call somebody a "hippo".
THEY CAN WEAR WHAT THEY WANT, THIS IS FRIGGIN AMERICA.

Last time I wore skinny jeans my butt really was out of this world, in a bad way. I stick to trouser, slight flares, and boot cut jeans for my body type.

Skinny jeans are for young people. Older people shouldn't wear 'em. They're probably the ones w/ the problems. If the jeans don't fit comfortably, don't wear 'em ! Plain && simple.

All I typically wear are stilettos and skinny jeans. I occasionally feel the tingling in my legs and I daily suffer from sore feet. And, I'm sure in 40 years I will suffer major back pain due to my stilettos. But hey, I only live once. I'm young, fit and sexy. I might as well dress my best while I'n still at my best. Flats and wide leg pants will have to wait until retirement. There is a time, age and place for certain fashion trends. Early twenties is not the age to give up such a a fabulous fad.

My skinny jeans (from Target) have a lot of stretch in them so they are actually the most comfortable jeans I own! More comfortable than my regular Levi's! They are slim-fitting on me, they don't bag or gap at all, but they aren't TIGHT over my thighs. Feels just like I'm wearing sweats, I'm not kidding! Stretch in jeans is a wonderful thing.

I don't see what the big deal is,
I have curves, i fit into skinny jeans.
Yea its stupid if you wear skinny jeans that are a million sizes too small, but i guess thats why they call them skinny jeans. *sarcastic*

    • tin-tin  •  3 years 0 months ago
THIS IS NOT APPLICABLE TO ALL TIGHT JEANS WEARER. BECAUSE WE MUST KNOW FIRST THAT WE DON'T WEAR JEANS THAT ARE UNCOMFORTABLY TIGHT. IT SHOULD BE AS COMFORTABLE AS WE CAN HAVE. DON'T GET THE TOO SMALL SIZE FOR YOU, YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO SQUEEZE YOUR LEGS WHICH IS NOT HEALTHY.
