Winter Clothing Crisis: Update

The last timeI wrote about winter clothing - I was freaking out because it was freezing cold and I was seriously lacking in the winter clothes department. After a multitude of helpful suggestions from Shine readers (thanks everyone) and some serious searching I have found some basic, and not so basic pieces to help warm up my wardrobe

When starting the search I went with the suggestions of the Shine community to add basic pieces that can be layered to add warmth to clothing I already own. Some of the finds that I feel merit sharing are listed below in no particular order.

Wool Cardigan. I have found that it is possible to find a wool or wool blend cardigan for under $100. One thing that I have learned is the higher the wool content (over any synthetic or cotton) the warmer the sweater will be.

Nonno Shawl Collar Cardigan, $60, J.Crew.

Wool/Wool blend socks. I favor the merino wool variety, they have the warmth of wool without the bulk. I would keep a bulky pair of wool socks for the days where I may be outside for extended periods of time.

Diamond Deb Socks by SmartWool, $22, REI.

Silk Tank Top and Pants. Silk retains body heat while wicking away moisture. These pretty Pointelle pair from L.L. Bean are lightweight and perfect for layering under casual or work attire.

Pointelle Tank Top and Capri's $22 and 26, L.L. Bean.

Arm Warmers. The fingerless glove's less punky more sophisticated older sister. If you knit or crochet you can whip up a pair in no time or simply snap up this sweet pair by Coal.

Arm Warmers by Coal, $ 30, Eastern Mountain Sports.

In the not so basic department: I, like some of the other ladies who commented on my previous post have an affinity for wearing skirts and dresses year round. I know it sounds crazy, but I find them to be the most comfortable work options (sans the occasional, but serious updraft chill). I have found a couple of solutions to combat the chill of winter dress wearing.

Hot shorts, or bike shorts whichever. Worn underskirts and over tights both will help to insulate while being undetectable.

Sweater Knit Hot Short, $29, Danskin.

Leg Warmers, often associated with the 1980's and dancers (sometimes both) are a great layering piece when out and about. They can be worn over or under pants and over tights when wearing a skirt or dress.

Soft Sparkle Legwarmer, $24, Free People.

Scarf/Hoodie/Blankie. This last item is for the days when you can't bear to part with the warmth of your blanket but can't quite make the blanket work as a shawl. I give you the Scoodie or maybe it should be the Harf. Okay I will leave you all to name it, while I ponder it's virtues and whether or not I can get away with wearing it.

Chunky Ribbed Hoodie Scarf, $38, Urban Outfitters

The list could really go on and on. Have any of you stumbled across any unusual or indispensable winter clothing items? Are there any good deals going on now for winter apparel? Please share.
