Women spend an average of $34 on jeans

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesAccording to a survey in the upcoming September issue of ShopSmart by Consumer Reports, women spend an average of $34 on their denim. They interviewed over 1,000 women ages 18 and up about their jean habits. Younger ladies aged 18 to 34 cough up a little extra dough, spending around $60 a pair. Only one in 10 women said they've spent over $100 on jeans. And while 85% of women wear jeans at least once a week, more than half of them said they wished they could wear them every day.

"As much as women are hooked on these weekend faves turned fashion staple, over half of the women polled (56%) said they have trouble finding jeans that fit and flatter, with 8 percent seeking professional help to find a pair," says ShopSmart editor-in-chief Lisa Lee Freeman.

Some more fun facts about jeans from this survey:

    • Women own seven pairs (25% own ten or more)
    • Four pairs are in regular rotation
    • 50% hold on to their skinny jeans hoping they'll fit again, while 31% refuse to go up a size to find ones that fit
    • 20% of women hang on to at least one pair for 10 years or more
    • 58% who work in an office wear jeans to work, and 27% wear them almost every day
    • Ultra low-rise jeans is the denim trend most women hate
    • Most women was their jeans after two to three wears

You can read more poll results here.

We'd like to survey our Shine readers! How much do you spend on jeans? How many pairs do you have in your closet, and how often do you wear them?

I have a pair of 200$ jeans I got as a gift and I was extremely upset when after 3 years I wore holes in the crotch area. Best fit I've ever had! Now none of my other jeans compare...

I like the ultra low rise jeans also. I'm short waisted, so they barely go to my belly button. Any 'normal' rise jeans goes up to the bottom of my boobs. :-(

That is OUTRAGOUOS!! Jeans are the ONE item in my wardrobe that I DO NOT spend full price on. My local thrift stores carries jeans and for $4.00 for a pair of slightly used Levi’s, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Cline or Old Navy jeans, you can’t beat it. I can’t wear jeans at work but I love them and will change when I get home or wear them on the weekends. Why would you want to spend that kind of $$ on something for weekend wear anyway?

Some people are addicted to shoes, some people are addicted to bags....I'm addicted to jeans! I have at least 35 pairs ranging from designers like Citizen of Humanity, 7 for all Mankind and True Religion to American Eagle, The Limited, Chip and Pepper and Roxy. If I could wear jeans everyday there is no doubt that I would. I think $34 for a pair of jeans is pretty reasonable, but I don't mind splurging on a good pair!

We pay that much because that's how much they cost. You tell me a single decent (not fall apart in five minutes) pair of jeans that cost less. Seven pairs? I usually own 1 or 2. I don't wear a lot of jeans. Right now I'm in khaki cargos.

Burlington Coat Factory has tons of jeans which fit me very well. Variety of prices. Mine are "everyday" jeans. While they look and feel great, I'm not out to impress anyone with "high end" jeans. Mine look just as good as "high end" people's jeans. Many friends spend fortunes on expensive jeans, and really, they don't look any better (just looking at them) than mine! (Just sayin'.......)

That's pretty accurate for me; I'll spend about thirty dollars on a pair and don't have more than two or three.

$34!!! What? That can't be right. Are there women counted in this who shop lift their jeans? Even the cheap jeans from Gap cost $70. And if I want something that fits, I end up dropping over $100 at Lucky Jeans.
But I still can't get anything stylish for my tall self. I flatly refuse to drop over $200 for True Religion or other brands who stock tall sizes in their stores. (I am not willing to shop for clothes online since I have to pay shipping, wait, then pay to ship them back when they don't fit)

Citizens of Humanity are the best figure flattering jeans! I have 2 pair, didnt pay full price for them either! :) I did pay full price for a pair of "7 for all mankind" about $120 at Macy's.... then i had to have them hemmed, another $10, urgh. I wear jeans everyday and i wish i could spend more money on them, but you just have to watch our for sales! and Costco ;)

I think this is why women don't find jeans they love and have a stack in the closet. I am not rich, but I went designer jean shopping and found that there is a reason they are more expensive. I finally found my designer that makes a jean for my body. William Rast! And I spend about $200 a pair. But I also only have about 4 pair, with the exception of "work / paint" jeans. And I have all I need, room in my closet, a happy me when I look in the mirror at me in the jeans. . . and you know what?? I spend just as much if not less than the people spending $30 on a pair jeans, because thouse people usually have about 15 pair in thier closet!
Some people don't see eye to eye with ,me on this one. But I believe in this theory!

Ralph Lauren and Lucky Brand and some of Tommy Hilfiger, no straight leg, boot cut, just depends on one's preference, and they how look and fit.

I love Jeans, i dont usually wear anything else since im a little chubby and dont like showing off my legs, seriously? $35? to me thats a lot and im only 15. my family doesnt have a lot of money so i dont like to spend more than 20 on a single pair, i like to shop when things are on sale and in downtown LA good skinny jeans are usually at 10-15 dollars, and their skinny jeans (they usually cost more) and fit great, they usually last a good 3 years or so too.

I find it quite difficult to find jeans that fit me since the crotch and butt area never fits right so when I do find a pair I like I stock up on several of them. I have about 7 or 8 pairs total but I only wear 2 to 3 of them daily as the other ones don't fit at the moment. On average I spend around $30 to $60 but if I came across a pair that I absolutely LOVED, I'd have no problem shelling out $100+. It's well worth it since you can never go wrong with a rockin' pair and they'll last FOREVER. Just to add, right now I'm really into American Eagle's bootcut jeans. They feel and fit like a dream. *sigh* :]

I looooooove Levis! I'm tall, so I have to buy jeans in either long or tall. Levis fit really well and are long enough. The price isn't bad either. I can usually find them on sale at a little over $30.

Love jeans but it's always hard to find petite ones that flatter my JLO butt..lol.

i love the articles that think finding good jeans for under $100 is a miracle--i don't know whether to laugh or scream. i love my jc penney jeans (i'm old & large) & they're about $35 regular, $20 on sale. lane bryant jeans do not fit right & are usually at least 6 in.too long! not to mention expensive. i'm 5'3", which is too tall to be short & too short to be average in inseam length, makes it difficult sometimes.

Although it is hard to find a good fit, I completely wish I could wear jeans everyday. If I could wear them everyday, I would gladly spend $100+ a pop for nice ones and then spend the extra cash to have them tailored.... There isn't much that looks better than a nice, well fitted, dark wash pair of jeans paired with a crisp button down and a great heel.

As it stands, I have a 4-5 pairs of jeans that retail for $150-$325, but the most I have ever spent on a pair is $80.00 and some were given to me, so they cost me nothing. I've had most of my jeans for 3+ years. A great pair, when cared for properly (or even reasonably) will last FOREVER. Good, high quality jeans are just a GREAT clothing investment.

My three tips for looking for jeans are: 1. Go to upscale thrift shops catering to your style and age group. I found a great pair of barely worn 7 jeans for $35 at one near me and they were already hemmed to the proper length. 2. Try Nordstrom Rack. I have a pair from there that retailed for $325, but I got for $80. Better yet, they were a petite size and didn't need to be hemmed. They are my go to jeans on days when I want to wear flats. 3. Check boutiques that are having end of season or going out of business sales. I have a pair of Paige jeans from one boutique near where I used to work that retailed for around $200. I got them during a closing sale for $50 and spent another $30 or so on alterations... This was 3+ years ago and they are still in fantastic shape. They are dark wash and haven't faded or lost their shape at all.

The Gap seems to be the only place I can find pants that fit. I love when they have sales.

I just recently got rid of 5 pairs, so I'm down to 14 pair now. I'm kind of a jean addict! I'd say 6 pair are Levis, then I hae some other random jeans, too. I almost always buy the Levis 542 (my faves!) on ebay and never pay more than $30 including shipping and these are NEW! I have 2 friends that buy the 7 for all mankind jeans at $180 which I think is ridiculous! I'm sure they are nice jeans, but still they are JEANS! I'll stick with my Levis!
