Women spend over eight years of their lives shopping

ThinkstockThinkstockMany women are raised to be shoppers. We go back-to-school shopping, hang out at the mall with our friends, go grocery shopping with our parents, and pick out cosmetics at the drugstore as soon as we're able and allowed to. Those shopping trips grow exponentially when you're independent and no longer need an adult to provide you with allowance and a ride. But how many hours have ladies clocked browsing and spending over the course of our lifetimes? Marketing research firm OnePoll.com surveyed 2,000 female shoppers to find out and, um, it's a lot.

The average woman makes 301 shopping excursions each year, spending around 400 hours buying clothing, books, food, and toiletries. They multiplied that by 63 shopping years and discovered that ladies spend 8.5 years, or 3,148 days of their lives shopping. Now, let's take a minute to remember women are the primary shoppers in each household. Picking up new socks for her kids or buying food for dinner and school lunches are hardly selfish acts or even retail therapy-they're more like errands! ''Many men seem to think women only shop when they are buying clothes for themselves," said a spokesman for OnePoll. ''But they quite often shop for the entire family and that can be incredibly hard work.'' You tell 'em!

Here's the breakdown of the amount of time we spend shopping for specific retail items each year:

    • Clothes - 30 times, total 100 hours and 48 minutes
    • Shoes - 15 times, 40 hours and 30 minutes
    • Accessories - 18 times, 29 hours and 31 minutes
    • Food - 84 times, 94 hours and 55 minutes
    • Books - 57 times, 31 hours and 21 minutes
    • Toiletries - 27 times, 17 hours and 33 minutes
    • Gifts - 19 times, 36 hours and 17 minutes
    • Window Shopping - 51 times, 48 hours and 51 minutes

Do these numbers ring true for you, or do you feel you spend less (or even more!) time hitting the shops?

I might spend that much time in the food and toiletries categories but that's about it. We often share the food shopping time but I do almost all of the household/toiletry shopping. No way I spend 100hrs on clothes shopping or 40hrs a year on shoe shopping. I typically dont spend more than an hour at the mall when I go- I buy what I want and get out- and I hate shoe shopping. Give me a few comfortable, functional pairs of shoes and I'm set for the year. However...do I think my MIL has spent/will spend 8yrs of her life shopping? Absolutely! Shopping is like a sport for her...

      Heisenberg..

Very general statements you are speaking of. Sounds to me like you may have just had some bad luck with women and their credit cards in the past.

The article doesn't even seem that accurate and when you do the math, it's a little skewed.

I don't get to shop as much so the statistics does not apply for every woman.

Each year has 52 weeks. If we have a time shopping 6-7 hours every week. Maybe can

Shopping, so fun, and good exercise with all the walking too. That should count for something!

I grocery shop, and that's usually that. I don't know if online "window shopping" counts though. I like to look at stuff on sites, however can't buy any of the stuff.

I don't spend more than an hour a day shopping at all though, not at the grocery store or online. I just don't have the time. I work and go to school. I don't have kids, however do have a husband who likes home cooked food.

For the record, they are talking about all types of shopping, not just shopping for clothing and shoes. The ones claiming they are not slaves to fashion and have more important thing to do...get over your self-righteous, pompous self!! You aren't special one bit!! And the guys saying women have no impulse control and all they do is buy without considering the price, you are a dick and clearly a loser. Thank goodness women are smarter than to waste their time with a jackass loser like yourself who stereotypes women. FYI, don't know about the first thing about women, which is why you'll spend enternity alone with just your left hand to keep you company!!

Really? 8 years of our lives? I totally disagree. I hate shopping. I would rather make my own wardrobe line than go out and buy or hunt for hours on end in what I am searching to buy(which most of the stores don't have what I want either in my size, or it is sold out, or it does not fit correctly). 8 years can most definitely go to much more beneficial things toward my own life.

Well duh of course they do because THEY do the majority of shopping... they shop for the kids, they shop for the home, they shop for fun, they shop for themselves. But of course it depends on the person. Personally, I think a woman in her lifetime will spend much more than 8 years shopping easily!!

If you hate shopping and clothes so much....why are you looking at the Fashion & Beauty section in Shine? My gosh people! Some guys shop at the mall more then women. Sometimes you go to the mall NOT to shop for clothes but just to walk around. And you may happen to see something you like.

and they wonder why their significant other gets pissed off...

Yes, these numbers are very unrealistic. Who goes to the bookstore 57 times a year? Also, shopping for shoes and accessories often takes place on the same "trip" as does shopping for clothes. Overall, very questionable data, and a silly emphasis on the altruism of womens shopping.
