Yay! French Elle's amazing no-makeup issue (and why American mags need to step it up)

The April issue of French Elle features eight female European celebrities--including Eva Herzigova, Monica Bellucci, Sophie Marceau, and Charlotte Rampling--all without makeup and, perhaps even more revealing, all entirely without Photoshopping or retouching of any kind. The mag's headline "Stars Sans Fards" translates to "without rouge/makeup," but it's a French saying that also suggests a sense of "openness."

Judging from the images that have been leaked so far (the entire issue hits newsstands later this week), this title could not be more apt. Model Herzigova, 36, and actresses Marceau, 42, and Bellucci, 44, all look refreshingly natural, relaxed, and vulnerable in a way American stars are seldom seen.

In fact, what might be most striking about French Elle's pictorial is how it actually appears to embrace and celebrate the organic beauty of these famous faces (even if the lighting is super, super flattering and the women are all unbelievably gorgeous to begin with). In the U.S., when you come across a "stars without makeup" story, there's always a GOTCHA! element, a message that says "Our gift to you: Derive pleasure from how ugly this person looks without cover-up for her zits!"

If you think about it, even our celebration of "natural beauty" is often far from natural. Consider the air-brushing scandal that surrounded last year's Dove ads, or the countless "normal" celebs who are heralded for their curves but then, when they're featured in a magazine, are digitally whittled down so they appear several sizes slimmer. We're a curvy country that can't handle looking at curvy people. It's all kind of sad.

And, honestly, French Elle's April '09 issue is not the first time our women's mags have been out-classed by the Europeans. Last year--in protest of the serious lack of diversity on catwalks, ads and in women's magazines--Italian Vogue published an all-black issue featuring models of color from around the world. It sold out in days.

So American magazine editors, I plead to you: It's time to step up your game. American readers would like to see some real, healthy women who actually look like themselves. Please stop with the whole Frankenstein thing: We know you attach your cover models' heads to skinnier bodies. We know you slim down their thighs and their noses and you lighten their skin. We know you smooth out all of the facial "imperfections" that make them look human. We're tired of fembots. We can handle the truth.
Seriously, the next time you're shooting Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Aniston, SJP, Alba, or basically anyone we've seen you airbrush into a complete, unrecognizable freak; pause, take a deep breath, and ask yourself, "Would this person look more beautiful and relatable without all this fake garbage?"

We're guessing the answer will always be "Yes."

Beauty may only be skin deep, but ugly goes down to the bone. I think the most beautiful thing a woman can put on is HER smile. Everything else starts to look like someone or something else. An original smile is not only attractive, but contagious. Make up is best when applied to even out skin tones and subtle enhancement(s). Save the stage make up for the stage and the war paint for the war. BTW, Monica is very attractive even without a smile.

Compared to other countries, Americans tend to be uglier. They don't take care of themselves right. That's why Americans LOVE cosmetics and photoshop, because it hides the ugly.

These women either have on makeup to look "natural", or they are airbrushed. Plus they adjust the lighting perfectly and pose at just the right angle to make the face look flawless and younger. Try this yourself. Pose with different lighting conditions and then hold a mirror above your face. Voila, instant beauty. Don't be fooled. These women do not look like this in real life. Another ploy to sell magazine. Don't buy it (literally!)

Love this article! I tried on some makeup about a year ago and my kids had a fit. I had to wash it off STAT. Women: we're beautiful as we are. We just need to adjust our concept of beauty.

I LUV IT ! Finally, a real look at women, with our natural beauty. I recently started going with less & less makeup. It feels great! I have been using Wexler Products, a slight tinted moisturizer with SPF 30, Skin Regenerating Serum, my skin has never looked better. People NEVER guess my age, they are always shocked when I tell them I am 51. The photos of Britney Spears for the Candies underwear ad...is another great example of accepting our bodies. I am happy to see this trend, it's been a long time coming.

I'm asian. I never see asian models or when I do they have a lot of "white" features.

It's amazing and beautiful in and of itself knowing that there are women out there willing to show what and who they are, and to not hide under a facade. I have always been a minimalist when it comes to wearing makeup and for what its worth, its envigorating going out and being who you are. I hope this catches on. I'm tired of trying (as I'm sure millions of other women are too) of being an unrealistic and unhealthy size 0-2, I want happiness and love. Let's embrace being ourselves without makeup and falsities.

I love how the models are going with a natrual look! I have noticed when I see some people with make up, and then without makeup. . . .they look like 2 completly different people! People need to show their true self! I can proudly say I do not wear makeup

As a guy I like the natural look. Too often you see someone that looks like Dame Edna! A nice natural face is a lot more attractive than someone who looks ready for Japanese Kabuki theatre!!! BTW - what's with the pencil eyebrows that some women wear??? They look perpetually surprised!

Years ago I saw Cindy Crawford interview Linda Evangelista (and a few other models). Cindy asked the ladies if they ever felt guilty when a young girl would come up to them and say, "Oh, you're so beautiful. I want to look just like you.", knowing that it took 4 hours in a chair to make them look that way. Linda Evangelista said "no" along with some other nonsense. Cindy called her on it. I've liked her ever since.

Well I definitely see lipstick in all these women and Monica Belluci has a ton of makeup on including pink lipstick; dr Perricone's "No Foundation" Foundation, eyeliner, mascara & brown eye shadow. BELLUCI IS A CHEAT! There is such a thing as the no-makeup makeup look! I bet all of them also have concealer. Sophie Marceau looks like a corpse, she's the worst.

But let's no forget, all of these women have had EXTENSIVE PLASTIC SURGERY. Just look inside Heidi Klum's book & you will see her old nose. Herzigova has a chin implant. We don't ask them to remove their silicone facial implants now do we?! Of course they're going to still look alright with all that fake crap on their faces!

omg no wonder they always put make up, they're so ugly without it! And to think that so many young people like me envied celebrities, I find myself like a million times better looking than them.

I don't believe they don't have make up on. They have some make up on. I don't believe anything anymore unless I see it or hear it.

Interesting concept, but I agree that it is not totally au naturel it only appears to be.
