Your Fanny of Your Face: Which Would You Choose?

There's an old saying that's usually attributed to French actress Catherine Deneuve: "When a woman reaches a certain age, she has to choose between her fanny and her face."

What Catherine is getting at is the "Sophie's Choice" of vanity. As much as women hate extra roundness and softness in their lower bodies, faces need fat to fill out wrinkles and look young. So as a woman ages, she ends up with two choices: Diet and exercise like crazy to stay skinny, which will prematurely age her face, or accept some chub, knowing that her face looks emollient and youthful instead of sunken and stretched.

4 Makeup Mistakes That Age You

In many highly scientific online polls, women choose their faces at a rate of three to one, but if you look at many women-actresses, singers, rich urban career ladies, and rich suburban housewives-it's pretty clear that they've chosen their fannies. To them, being sixty and still able to fit into a sample size designer dress is the ultimate victory.

6 Actresses Who Sacrificed Their Beauty for Roles

Of course, the main goal is to be healthy and age naturally (which we think is the most beautiful), but for the sake of argument, if you had to choose, which would you pick: your ass or your face?

      Or get a face lift.

I think women should embrace their natural beauty rather than focus on "hollywood's expectations of what is beautiful".

Nobody really responded to the actual question. DEFINITELY MY FACE! now we could be fit and have a youthful face, not skinny but yes we can have a hard body without been skinny or looking old...it takes about 10 to 20 xtra pounds for this. The trick is to turn body fat into muscle without loosing weight so we can keep it on the face...... I am confused now .....! yes it is nice to be skinny but nothing beats when they hear ur age and they are surprise to tell you that you look younger than your actual age....i guess once again..... "TO EACH IT'S OWN". as long as you love yourself...... =D

Funny I was just thinking today how much better my face looks with a little weight. I still exercise like a nut. I try to limit stick carbs that give your countenance that doughy appearance.

      i would say fanny
With my face i can add makeup etc to make it look a bit younger
But if I had to really pick both I would say both

But then again, if you have the time and/or money, you can always focus on both!

exercise per se, doesn't age your face, but losing weight and losing the fat from your face makes it look more sullen and wrinkles more likely and more apparent.

Can;t have slender AND curves, gotta pick one or the other. I personally need to keep looking as young as I can to compete in the job market and my face is au naturel and plan to keep it that way.

In some countries the word fanny means a female body part.

I'm a long time fan of Catherine - she is beautiful - have a few interviews of her and she is a smart, intelligent woman, not just a gorgeous face.

Seeing as my idea of beauty is not to be really thin and wear a size 2 this isn't a choice for me. I'm curvy, always have been and always will be. I like my curves and I like having a nice size fanny.

I've come up with a good plan I think. I'll work on getting in shape now, then when I get into my 60's start eating donuts again to plump up my face lol.

As a European this article has a very different meaning for me! LOL! Don’t think Ill ever get used to hearing Americans refer to there butt as “fanny”

FYI: Fanny means vagina outside of the US.

I would prefer to keep my face, but in reality, I know I could never let myself get fat. I'm too conscious of what I eat. Besides, based off my aunts, in our family fat doesn't go to the face anyway, it all goes straight to the fanny and it knows no limits. It's scary, and hazardous.

yeah, I have already chosen face over fanny. Many actresses have chosen to remain skinny and inject thier faces with all manner of fillers; all of these are very noticeable, and few look natural. Especially those who have been in the public eye for years, and we are familiar with thier natural contours. Madonna is obviously not one of those women; she has the thin rock- hard body and the gaunt aging face to match.

      This is a ridiculous article!

Im sorry but disagree totally with this article. I come from small, slender, petite family all small framed, small boned and oval faces, not one of us heavy, fluffy, obese or of that nature (which is fine, we all are diffrent), my parents in thier 80s look 10 to 15 years younger, my sister and I both in our 50s easily look 15 years younger, not one person has every thought us to be over mid to late 30s, 40 tops, we have small faces, good bone structure ,both small behinds. I acutally think its more genetics, how you eat, what you eat, and thick hair and eyebrows that are not pencil thin, wearing clothes that fit well and compliment you and keeping teeth nice. Ive also met women who were heavy set who looked younger, not! because of plumper face , but because of good healthy looking skin, no turkey jaw or neck and heavier or not they took care of themselves. Also my Dad still has brown hair mixed with grey in his mid 80s and I have now about 10-12 greys in 50s. Just take care of what you were blessed with, smile, laugh, keep those teeth nice and you will look ROCKIN! at any age ladies. :)

i so agree with this article! women spend all their lives exercising and staying skinny minnies and as they age -their face starts looking like a skeleton. please chicks. stay slender with your curves and your face will stay lovely and youthful.

and pancakes -f-- in brit slang means cigarette -what's your point? try commenting on the actual article

Face for sure. Women don't look good being super skinny as they get older. I don't ever want to rock the bony chest look.

I've heard of calling people butt-ugly before, but never have I heard that someone has a face made out of a fanny... =P

Thanks Divine Caroline for actually admitting and acknowledging something of the original article was changed. It's nice that if people stumble on here after this point in time (the title shows up properly for me now) that if they read all the comments, they won't think that the first few are nuts, that there's no typo. Refreshing to see that here on Shine.
