14 Ways to Save Money on Groceries

Save money and trips to the market with these tips and tricks from Rebecca DiLiberto's Penny Saving Household Helper. You'll be surprised how simple it is to keep food at its best.

    1. Line the bottom of your refrigerator's crisper drawer with paper towels. They'll absorb the excess moisture that causes vegetables to rot.

    2. To keep herbs tasting fresh for up to a month, store whole bunches, washed and sealed in plastic bags, in the freezer. When you need them, they'll be easier to chop, and they'll defrost the minute they hit a hot pan.

    3. A bay leaf slipped into a container of flour, pasta, or rice will help repel bugs.

    4. Stop cheese from drying out by spreading butter or margarine on the cut sides to seal in moisture. This is most effective with hard cheeses sealed in wax.

Plus: Browse our favorite cheese recipes and learn how cheese is made!

    5. When radishes, celery, or carrots have lost their crunch, simply pop them in a bowl of iced water along with a slice of raw potato and watch the limp vegetables freshen up right before your eyes.

    6. Avoid separating bananas until you plan to eat them - they spoil less quickly in a bunch.

    7. Put rice in your saltshaker to stop the salt from hardening. The rice absorbs condensation that can cause clumps.

    8. Stock up on butter when it's on sale - you can store it in the freezer for up to six months. Pack the butter in an airtight container, so it doesn't take on the flavor of whatever else you're freezing.

    9. In order to make cottage cheese or sour cream last longer, place the container upside down in the fridge. Inverting the tub creates a vacuum that inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes food to spoil.

    10. Believe it or not, honey is the only nonperishable food substance, so don't get rid of the stuff if it crystallizes or becomes cloudy. Microwave on medium heat, in 30-second increments, to make honey clear again.

Bonus: We narrow down America's best local honey.

    11. Prevent extra cooked pasta from hardening by stashing it in a sealed plastic bag and refrigerating. When you're ready to serve, throw the pasta in boiling water for a few seconds to heat and restore moisture.

    12. Keeping brown sugar in the freezer will stop it from hardening. But if you already have hardened sugar on your shelf, soften it by sealing in a bag with a slice of bread - or by microwaving on high for 30 seconds.

    Extra: Turn Trash into Treasures

    13. If you only need a few drops of lemon juice, avoid cutting the lemon in half - it will dry out quickly. Instead, puncture the fruit with a metal skewer and squeeze out exactly what you require.

    14. If you're unsure of an egg's freshness, see how it behaves in a cup of water: Fresh eggs sink; bad ones float.

Plus: Learn the tricks to keeping food fresh longer so your dollars don't go to waste.

I have to disagree w/you on the rice in salt. Yes, it does work. I've done it for 40 years and have yet to see where it doesn't. Maybe you live in a more humid area. Wonder if that would make the difference.

I always use a piece of macaroni in my salt, learned this from my Mother who would be 90 if she were still here with us. I trust her judgement completely.

The celery tip above DEFINITELY works! I wash it, dry on p. towells, put it in tight bread bag and wrap securely in foil......STAYS great for a month or better.....I was astonished!!!! OOP'S! almost forgot, take off brown ends, if any!

Some of these things I have done for along time now. Instead of just using paper towels to line my vegetable and meat bins I also put in the seperators from soda pop and beer containers, THEN I layer on the paper towels. These seperators are great for draining fat off the bacon after cooking up. Again place down seperator put a paper towel or two and put your bacon on it to drain off the excess grease.

These tips are very helpful, especially when you're only preparing food for one. And then the kids come home from college & I'm glad I can "un-wilt" some fresh vegies. The cold water tip also works well for lettuce, fresh parsley, ect. Also, those "stay fresh longer" bags do work.

      Hello,
I have one comment on preserving green vegetables staying fresh and lasting longer.

Wash green vegetables with clean cold water a couple of times to make sure that they clean,an soak the vegetables in hot water. for a few seconds.

Store them in a plastick container or bag.

Your vegetable will remain fresh and good testings.

That's a funny comment about the rice. I grew up with rice in my salt shaker. I have never had it break and plug the holes. Hmmm. My cousin puts a toothpick in hers.

I will use the herb idea. thanks

I know that putting a cracker in a salt shaker has helped me in the past, as well as putting a cracker in brown sugar too, and sealing it up in a tight zip lock or plastic bag too, has helped me...I too, have put flour, rice, pancake mix, etc. in the freezer, as this too has aided me in many things!!!! My Mom has put her fresh veggies in them green bags that one can buy(I forget the name of them), that too works, for awhile, but it is best to be sure that all of the veggies are washed, & dried real good before putting them in these green bags, & then putting them in the refrigerater, as I have found veggies to last longer......

the banana thing isn't true - in fact they rot faster when they are together. I put them in the fridge to keep from rotting (usually lasts about a week longer)

good to try for those who have no common sense!

Many of you have said seperating bananas will cause them to last longer than keeping them in a bunch. I have tried both methods with equally disappointing results. I have more success when I hide them. Any one know a super fast way to ripen bananas? Even with hiding them they still never last long enough to get really ripe for my banana bread recipe.

Grab a plate and pull up a chair. Easy and quick trick for my honey never will I threw out that old crystalized stuff again!

Being a Florida resident since 1953 (yes, I'm ancient....but I know a LOT about humidity),I can affirm that placing a small amount of rice in the salt shaker DOES keep the salt from caking up. If you find that the rice is getting in the way of salt coming out of the holes, it's because you have too much rice and not enough salt in the shaker.....simple !
