5 Reasons Being Nice to Neighbors Can Save You Big Money

moneymoneyIf you're human, chances are you want to save money.

So who knew it was as simple as listening to your kindergarten teacher. What, didn't yours teach you to share too?

California is debating a bill that would help neighbors share an SUV to green the state, but you don't have to wait for legislation.

Taking the concept out of the school playground and putting it to work in your neighborhood can save you hundreds a year.

    1. Internet service. All it takes is a wireless router, and you and your neighbor -- or neighbors -- can bring a $60 Internet bill down to $30 or less a month. You'll cover your cost of the router you would likely have bought anyway in about three to four months.

    2. Lawn equipment. A friend who has neighbors who live in their house only part-time went in with his neighbor on the cost of a riding mower. It enabled him (and his partner) to afford a much nicer mower than the original push model they were looking at.

    3. Trash pickup. They're going out at the end of the road anyway; so use the same cans or each put out one can for a two-can pickup and split the difference. Friends who do this report they cut their bill to $20-something a month from $40-something.

    4. Contracting services. A contractor who doesn't have to move his equipment back and forth or send his guys out for long drives between jobs saves money. So don't be shy about asking for a two-fer deal. I had my septic pumped the same time as my neighbor, and we were offered a discount for only requiring the truck to visit one neighborhood that afternoon.

    5. A babysitter. One sitter for multiple kids usually costs less than two sitters for same number of kids -- so double up be it daytime or date night (and a double date?).

Of course this only works if you LIKE your neighbors; but it might be worth kissing up for some major dough.

I am really sad that these days, most people don't even know their neighbors. I want so much to have good neighbors who look out for and help one another. This makes so much sense and you'd think people would be mentally, emotionally and spiritually mature enough to be a good neighbor, but it's just not the case anymore in most neighborhoods. I understand the concept of "to have a friend, you have to be a friend." I think more people need to try harder at making friends with their neighbors. I understand though, there are a lot of selfish and maybe even dangerous people who could be your neighbor and you have to be careful. I know there are neighborhoods that still have block parties and have people that are good neighbors, for the most part. I wish I could find a neighborhood like that.

Leaving more than your own kids with a babysitter--teen or adult--and expecting to pay the same is RUDE! Why would you want to take advantage of someone like that, especially a kid! I was angry when parents did this to me when I was a teen and I would be furious is someone did this to my daughter. Plus, a teen dividing her attention between your 3 kids is hard...do you really want to add a couple more? That's setting the whole thing up for disaster. And, one last thing--contractors need money right now. They're not offering buddy discounts.

Did they forget about the rest?
#6 Heavy duty extension cord run from neighbors outside power outlet while they're gone.
#7 Use other people's cell phones that have unlimited calling.
#8 Self invites for dinner at friends and neighbors. Or just show up at meal time.
#9 When you see your neighbors going to the store, ask them to pick up a few extra items, and then forget to pay them.
#10 Use your neighbors pool while they're out.
#11 When your kids babysit the neighbors, join them for dinner and a pay-per-view event.

Maybe we could recommend people live within their budget.

Sharing Internet and Garbage will often be in violation of your terms of service - in the case of internet that can result in a permanent refusal of service... if you live in an area with only one provider that can be a very bad thing. In some localities it may also get you a fine or worse - it's more or less the same as stealing cable which is a criminal offense in many parts of the country.

Check with your internet provider before sharing services. My guess is it is illegal and if there is need of a service call all parties could get in trouble.

Isn't that such a nice multi-cultural picture? Which I have no problem with other than it gets force fed to us daily.

The suggestion on #3 about trash service won't work everywhere. I live in a county that you will get fined (big time!) for not having a contract with a local--county approved, of course-- waste management business. And those business won't allow sharing between neighbors...

So I am a preschoo teacher and a college student. I baby sit on the side for extra cash for school books and gas money. I charge ten dollars an hour but if it's more than two kids I am going to add on my price! One it is much more work when having to deal with more than two kids, more to clean up after, and more to put to bed. I mean if it was one family with three kids I would say fifteen but if it's two families just trying to get a cheaper price when I am working for extra money because I need it, not happening! That's like ripping me off! Also internet and trash thing, well that is illegal. I lived on a street that wasn't contracted so it was okay that we gave my trash to someone else but my neighborhood that I live in with my parents, it definitely wouldn't be okay. And the internet thing you can do it then get charged for stealing internet. I mean is it worth saving for a few bucks to possibly be in jail and have something on your record? Really? And the lawn equipment that is a good idea, at least where I live in the country, but make sure you can really trust your neighbors, if not then it's not a good idea. When we would go out of town a neighbor cut our grass and when he was out of town we cut his grass. It just depends.

Oh really , share trash service ? Want a huge fine for not buying a trash sticker ? Thats what happened to us , we we're fixing up a house and didnt need trash , we had a dumpster. We were threatened by the city , either buy a sticker or we will see you in court . You can NOT do that everywhere and it is IRRESPONSIBLE of the author to not mention this .

Sharing trash service is illegal! Its called theft of service, and the person whose name is not on the bill can have their stuff put back in their yard! Trash collectors have been known to report this.

We have a nice relationship with our next-door neighbors and upstairs neighbors. We have occasionally watched each others' kids and picked up mail when out of town. However, when it comes to car sharing, my husband and I use Zipcar. There is one parked a block away in a residential garage and it's really easy. I just feel like it would get tricky trying to share a vehicle. I use a friend's car now and then but always feel like I'm taking advantage somehow--maybe it's just me--I hate having to lean on anyone too much.
