5 Things Not to Buy in a Supermarket

We love grocery stores. Their stock and trade is food - fresh, frozen, canned or prepared - and kitchen staples like paper towels and laundry detergent. But there are a whole host of other items that cost a premium in grocery stores because of the "convenience" factor. You can get them cheaper at a discount department or hardware store, dollar store, or drug store so leave the following items off your shopping list:

    1. Cookware and Kitchen Utensils

It may be convenient to pick up a frying pan while you're buying your bacon, but you'll be paying much more than you ought to for it.

PLUS: 9 Small Ways to Save on Food

    2. Cosmetics, toiletries, and personal care items

It might save time to buy your lip-gloss, moisturizer, toothpaste, razor blades, and deodorant at the same time and place you're getting your food, but you'll be paying a premium price.

    3. Small appliances

Why buy a toaster for $40 when you can buy the same toaster for $20 dollars at a discount house? The same theory applies to coffee makers, electric tea kettles, and hot plates.

Plus: 15 Foods You Should Never Buy Again

    4. Party supplies

Buy your balloons, funny hats, place cards, candles, and name tags in bulk at a party supply store and you'll pay a whole lot less.

    5. Batteries, light bulbs, extension cords

Again, these are pricey specialty items at the grocery store, but cheap impulse buys at a discount hardware, department, or dollar store!

Maybe that is why they call them grocery stores!

i hate shopping and the thought of driving to another store [while my icecream melts]to buy toothpaste and lightblubs to save $2.00 after burning $2.00 in gas driving to this super toothpaste/lightbulb super saver store really makes me wonder if the person giving this advise really knows what the F785 they are talking about...Cosmetics i buy at nordstrom.....

Actually, the grocery store is the best place to buy toiletries. Those items are MUCH more expensive at Target or Walgreens.

I usually find my local grocery store cheaper on food and toiletries then wal mart will ever be.

As for buying cookware. I been know to pick up a glass dish if I need to make a special dish. So I am not worried about not having one and the cost is similar Walmart.

Figuring in your time and the cost of gas to go to another place may zero out any savings.

I almost always try to buy things like a toaster or anything like that at places like the Dollar General store you will be really suprised at the saveing you can get by just going a little farther to get your items.

I agree with most of 1, 3,4, but not category items 2 & 5, First , I've gotten deodorants and soaps for free at double coupon days at Smiths and Albertsons and with category 5, supermarket light bulbs are a definite great buy, I've got shop-rite and name brand bulbs still from 5 plus years ago, bought at an 8-pak for a buck deal. Recently bought some Duracell rechargeable AA's at a Smiths for 3 dollars cheaper than Walmart so you just have to be price minded at all times.

My grocery does the 10 items for $10 and every now and then they do it on Energizer batteries. That's the best deal I have ever seen on batteries. 10 four packs of AA or AAA batteries for $10. Whoever wrote this has no clue about grocery deals.

I agree with all this except the personal care items... I buy deodorant, body wash, toothpaste, and razors all the time at Kroger and HEB. Their prices are about the same for those items (sometimes even cheaper during a good sale) as places like Target or Walmart.

Even if prices are slightly higher on some of those products, it's not significant enough (typically 5 cents to 10 cents) to justify driving to walmart and fighting the crowds, waiting in the long lines, and dealing with the trashy/rude clientele.

Cosmetics, toiletries, and personal care items -- If these items are on sale at the supermarket, than you can get them cheaper than WM. Most items go on sale every few weeks. Timing is the key.

I do not shop Wal Mart. I only bought a roast when they first opened and it was full of Formaldehyde. Why should I by chinese when I can buy American Made. Wake up people.

wal-mart is terrible....produce ghastly, merchandise is high end junk...meat comes in pre-packaged...service is worst than the dollar store...they are awful with employees....they have lost money last six quarters...good luck checking out...

It also depends on two factors as well: 1) How much is your time worth, if its going to be a 1/2 drive involved as well as finding a parking place, walking to the store, finding the item and getting back home. How much time was involved in paying one item that you needed.2) Also now adays you must factor in the cost of the gasoling that is involved. Another factor that many of have to add in is the "nerve factor"-which includes if you have the kids along how much more will you end up buying before you can get "your" item and get out of the store.
Like someone else mentioned sometimes going to WalMart or Sam's you can get out cheaper for everything..
