    Save $900 on Cable

Thought about pulling the plug on your cable bill, but just can't bring yourself to make the move? We barely watch all 200 channels, yet somehow succumb to the costly monthly expense, which on average runs consumers $75 and much when you add up all the premium channels, a DVR box and movie rentals.

The good news is, there are several alternatives to the traditional cable plan that can offer you and your family a better value. Steve Kovach, an editor at Business Insider who covers gadgets, apps and consumer technology, suggests the following cable substitutes. (A couple strategies, in fact, could save close to $900 a year):

    Digital TV

If all you watch is the news and Dancing With the Stars, then Digital TV may be your best bet. It's free with the small purchase of a pair of HD antennas. "You won't get the premium channels but your basic broadcast networks -- about 10 or so channels -- is still free," says Kovach. Figure the basic HD antenna costs about $25 - and deleting that $75+ per month cable bill -- and you're looking at savings of close to $900 a year.

    Boxee

If you're a big cable junkie and glued to your 100+ channels of content, consider ditching cable for a Boxee, which provides a plethora of programming you pay for "a la carte." It costs about $150 and lets you watch nearly anything, at any time. You can pull content from nearly anywhere on the Internet and get it up on your TV. It will even use all the apps and media you're already using such as podcasts, music from services like Pandora, Music MOG, etc. "If you own this box, you own the capabilities," says Kovach. "[Boxee] provides incredible flexibility and control over what you watch, and when you watch it." Just keep in mind, if you're a fan of shows on HBO, Showtime and other premium channels, you'll need to subscribe and pay for it through your cable provider. Kovach's advice? Wait for that programming to become available a few seasons down the road on other platforms like Netflix. "Besides, by then, you'll be able to watch the whole season at once!" Savings: $750 a year.

    Roku

Roku, which is another alternative to cable, offers similar services, but at a better price point. A Roku box is $50 or $99 for the HD version. The other added benefit of Roku is that it offers access to Hulu (Boxee does not). One caveat: Roku doesn't have quite as many premium apps, and some people find that limiting. Savings: $850 a year.

    Apple TV

For Apple junkies, Apple TV may also be worth consideration. The unit costs about $99, but like most apple products, it's proprietary. "The disadvantage is that Apple wants you to exclusively use iTunes to get content." If you're already accustomed to buying your media through iTunes, then this could be a good fit. Savings: $800 a year.

    Smart TV

If you're in the market for a new television, you may want to look into the growing market for smart TVs, which come equipped with Internet capabilities. Like smart phones, smart TVs have apps and software already included, which means you don't need a Roku or a Boxee to access various channels and programming. "Samsung, in particular, is a great brand to look for in Smart TVs, and believe it or not they don't cost any more than other LCD, plasmas or flat screens these days," says Kovach.

In sum, the real advantage to "cutting the cord" is having more control over what you watch, while paying a whole lot less. It's a win-win. Savings: At least $900 a year.

You take the blocker off the cable wire, screw it back together, go inside & watch free cable.
      You won't believe the savings!

That only works in places where there isn't much cable theft. In large urban areas, cable boxes are required to decode the signal. Aside from the fact that your advice is illegal, it's also counter-intuitive. More theft in areas like yours will mean that the cable providers will move to encoded signals and require that you lease their hardware to decode them in addition to purchasing their service. If you insist on stealing cable, at least be smart and keep your mouth shut about it.

+1 Drew Jib. I work for a cable company..and hooking up without paying is ILLEGAL, plus if you hook it up incorrectly without the right signal coming through, youll also likely cause your neighbors who do pay to get worse signal and even potentially cause an outage in your area. I've seen it. dont be that person.

I'm on a very limited disability income, and aside from reading, cable TV is a source of entertainment for me. I negotiate a lower rate every six months, but it still it costs too much.

get rid of TV altogether; use the internet for news and pick up a book for entertainment. wow, look at your savings now!
      • Emmie 13 days ago
@Tamanu: Exactly. We have 3 TV's and use them strictly for watching movies that we own. In fact that doesn't mean they get used much, we still have movies that are shrink wrapped.

Where we live we have to have cable tv. No satlites allowed. And in NH as in many other states you can no longer pick up any tv channels without cable or satlite. The government made it so you cannot use antenna's for your tv. There is one town in all of NH that can still get reception via antennas and that is so far north that it is practally Canada. Probably picking up their broadcasts.

Not sure where you live, but HOA's cannot prevent you from putting up a sat dish.

This is good for people who have a job or unemployement insurance.
What about some one who gets 15,00 dollars a year.
I need to find out how to live on less money as a retired person. I do not eat junk food. People who get perks who live in my building can live on their income. They pay less ofr rent, they get vouchers for taxi's and bus tokens, they get brown bag lunches that are full of sugar and salt. their rent is less than mine. They get their medication paid for they get county medi-cal benefits, I am not elegable for it any more. They get a housekeeper., I get more money from a decesed husband. It is hard to live with what I do get.

I am 66 and recall when we moved my mom (since deceased) to CA. Like you she lived on very little (Social Security) and her apartment rent took almost half her monthly income however she looked into every single thing offered free or reduced price to seniors, such as Brown Bag groceries and such. She was too proud to accept much help from us but she was smart/clever and always had a few dollars left at the end of the month which she saved. She made use of the public library and took advantage of every opportunity. She and her friends sometimes traded services/bartered and you would not have known she was of such modest means. I was so very proud of her for starting a new life in CA at age 70+. Stay positive and of good cheer no matter your circumstances and look for ways to earn a little extra (walk pets or pet sit for neighbors/friends, offer light care taking for seniors who can't get out, sign up for service where you are the person taking the phone order for a company like Harry & Davids, etc.). You must really put your thinking cap on to come up with ways and means to supplement your income without undue hardship while remaining happy and engaged in life. You will draw people to you with a sense of "can do spirit" versus sense of improverishment.

My cell phone got to high so I got a landline with the cable company, and it s half the price of another land line. And I still have my internet. I am an artist. I take my work to the local art walk for sale. I want to go to other communities. And bring soemthings. We help each other. Our brown bags are full of things that are not healthy. So most of my money goes for very good food. No sugar and very little salt. Fresh vegi's.
I belong to a barter group. It called time shares. I have wallked my neighbors dogs, they can not afford to pay me. I eat alot of beans and lentils and eggs and meat I get at a reduced price, just a little goes a long way. Mostly for flavor. I am putting in my garden again. I have to wait till the vetgi grow for now. I have two fruit trees growing in my plot. I feel younger everyday. I hope you will feel younger also.

Someone needs to start a new cable company where they have bundles such as 1-50 channels, 51-100 channels, etc. and you choose which channels you want and pay a set amount per month for that bundle. That way you're not paying an obscene amount for junk you don't watch.
    • Jay  •  Madison, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
The commercials are so long that they ruined many of the channels that have movies. When the commercials are so long that I forget what I was watching I know it's time to pull the plug.
