July 1st is Ginger Snap Day

Crunch! Crunch! What's more fun than a foodie holiday, particularly on the threshold of the summer's hottest holiday weekend?

Snap to it!

Today is Ginger Snap Day across the United States.

Low-fat and tangy, ginger snaps are great for snacking. Crushed, they also make delicious crusts for cheesecakes or pumpkin pies.

Do you love ginger snaps? Most people either love them or hate them. Filled with brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, molasses, these tasty treats can be addicting.

How do you like your ginger snaps?

Some cookie bakers make ginger snaps with chocolate, honey, lemon, maple syrup, oatmeal, orange zest or other added flavorings. Personally, I'm a bit of a traditionalist, when it comes to ginger snap cookies. My best choice is my own Granny's hand-me-down recipe (see link below).

In Norwegian cookies, they call ginger snaps "

pepparkakors." These Norwegian delights are extra dainty and crunchy, usually featuring scalloped edges and stacked in festive cookie tins.

Cookie fans in the United Kingdom enjoy Cornish Fairings, which are akin to American ginger snaps, only chewier.

However you stack 'em, ginger snaps are not just for Christmas anymore. July 1 st is Ginger Snap Day. Why not bake up a batch for the 4 th of July weekend?

Ginger snaps are gastronomically great.

As a bonus, ginger is an age-old remedy for upset stomachs, especially after overeating. What could be more appropriate after a big 4 th of July barbecue than a sweet, stomach-settling morsel.

Save the gingerbread boys for Christmas, but go ahead and grab some chewy or crunchy ginger snaps for this summer foodie holiday.
