    Beer-Turkey Chili

    servings:8
    cook time:20min

    Top ideas for dinner tonight

This hearty, mouthwatering chili boasts all the flavors of the traditional smoky Southwestern standard, but features turkey as a healthy alternative to beef. Save time by chopping your peppers and onions in a food processor, if desired; then just let the whole mixture simmer, filling your kitchen with the flavors of the Southwest. The beer brings added depth of flavor to the stew, while the red wine vinegar makes all of the flavors pop.

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb. turkey breast tenderloin or skinless, boneless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-size strips or cubes
    • 1 cup chopped green sweet pepper
    • 1 cup chopped onion
    • 1 tsp. bottled minced garlic
    • 2 Tbsp. cooking oil
    • 2 28-oz. cans diced tomatoes, undrained
    • 2 15-oz. cans black beans or Great Northern beans, rinsed and drained
    • 1 12-oz. can beer
    • 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
    • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1 tsp. dried oregano, crushed
    • 1 tsp. ground cumin
    • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
    • 1/4 tsp. bottled hot pepper sauce
    • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese (4 ounces)

    Directions

    1. 1In a Dutch oven cook turkey or chicken, sweet pepper, onion, and garlic in hot oil until turkey is browned.
    2. 2Add undrained tomatoes, beans, beer, vinegar, chili powder, salt, oregano, cumin, pepper, and hot pepper sauce. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 20 minutes or until turkey is tender, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle some of the cheese over each serving. Makes 8 (1 1/2-cup) servings.

This is very similar to my own recipe for turkey chili, so I'll give it 5 stars. The main differences between mine and this one is 1) mine uses 3 tablespoons of chili powder for an 8-serving recipe; 2) I don't use the hot pepper sauce; and 3) I add a quarter cup of cilantro. You can also add some celery, if you wish, for a bit of added crunch.

the alcohol cooks out, its for the flavor, I don't drink either but we bought a bottle of Marsala wine for Chicken Marsala tonight, and i have bought 1 can of beer for soup in the past.

You can also substitute water for beer

Oh get over it. It has one 12 oz can of beer!! And for 8 servings nonetheless. No one is getting drunk off of this. Alcohol cooks away leaving flavor only.

This showed up on the "this week's dinners" thing and I don't appreciate that it's a recipe with BEER in it! What about people who don't drink? What about people who have KIDS? I should think a little more thought and planning would go into the "dinners for this week" spot, unless the computer randomly selects recipes to put on it. Yes, this recipe is great for drunks and adults who just don't care, but the rest of us would like CLEAN recipes.
