Chalkboards are a fun and easy way to communicate. You can add one to just about any space in your home. They can be small or large, plain or ornate. Just remember to put them in an area where everyone can see them. Create your own version of a family billboard with one of these five easy chalkboard projects.
• Store Bought Frames
If you want a quick and easy chalkboard project, all you have to do is visit your local discount or home improvement store. Pick up a small can or chalkboard paint and a picture frame sized to fit an available space on your wall. Just paint the glass with a couple coats of chalkboard paint and hang it on your wall for a new message center.
• Built-in Frames with Shelves
If you've got the space, go big with a custom-built chalkboard in your kitchen or hallway. Tape off a large section of wall, paint it with chalkboard paint, then install a shelf below and framing on the sides and top. You'll have a nice, large surface to write on and a shelf to collect keys, cell phones and other small items as you come and go.
• Corner Activity Units
You may not have a large wall to dedicate to a chalkboard; but, you can probably sacrifice a small corner of a room for a make-shift activity center. Paint the upper half of the corner with chalkboard paint and frame out the two writing boards. Then build in a little corner shelf below with a drawer to hold chalk and other little trinkets. Slide a small stool underneath and you just brought a whole lot of function to a small little corner.
• Art or Object Embellished
Chalkboards can get really fancy. Bring in ornate framing to make them stylish. Or you can paint little snippets of art on the surface. The prettiest chalkboard I've ever seen didn't even look like a chalkboard - it looked like a piece of art with a black background. Just get creative and enjoy the results.
• Outdoor Chalkboards
Don't forget the outdoor walls when you're looking for a place to house your chalkboard. Place one right in your entry as a convenient way to write a warm welcome for each season or leave messages for anyone who comes to call.
